Some comments on some previous replies. The style or status of the locking hubs shouldn't matter if they are not getting any power to the front in 4H but it works okay in 4L. As far as using the positions shown on the shifter I'm not sure that is possible. The physical detents are within the transfer case. You can clearly feel the shifter pop into each selection and not like you have to precisely place the shifter in the correct location....on mine as soon as you pull it out of 2H it basically pops into 4H, then N, then 4L. I'm not sure you could even make the shifter stay between two positions unless you held it with your hand.
