Sold my dirt bike and am looking for a sport quad. The obvious ones are raptor, banshee, blaster, warrior but I was wondering if there were any 4wd sport quads outside of a Polaris scrambler. I’ve always had utility quads so I’m a bit new to the sport quad thing. Really would prefer a manual transmission as the dirt bike got me hooked on that. I think I’m hunting for a needle in a haystack but I’m hoping the collective here may know something I don’t.

The scrambler is pretty much it. And they aren't that fast.
Buddy had one. And my piped and jetted 400ex would walk it, every single time.

His was the 500 to. A 400 scrambler will make you wonder why Polaris even bothered making quads.

Stick with a quad from the big 4.
The 400s are good. The 450s are good.
Obviously the older 2 smokes are good.
Stay away from the sport qauds that just trail machines. Warriors, 300ex, Mojave, etc.

Can am does the Renegade, but used they are hard to find. New are expensive. But I'm not sure what your looking for.
I don't think I'd want one from a weight standpoint. But never ridden one so idk.

I figured that was it. I love my Polaris’s as we’ve had a lot and they’ve been great but speed was never something I associated them with. I’ve got a line on a 400ex for $2000 but it needs a new one way installed. Debating seeing if I can beat him down to $1500 as it’s been sitting for a while and needs a good going through. He’s also my brother in law’s brother haha.

Trails are a good portion of what I plan on doing which is why I was looking at the warrior and that line of bikes.

400ex are great quads. Great trail machines. I said to stay away from the lesser machines, Because you will want more machine after a bit.

At least with the 400s, (400ex/kfx400/Ltr400/z400.)
You will have enough machine you should be pretty happy for a long time. Good handling, power, brakes, etc.
And of course if those don't work, you can always step up to a 450.

It would be hard to steer you away from a 2 smoke if you wanted to go that route to. I still ride a 86 250r

I've got a Polaris xplorer 400 4x4 2 stroke automatic. It's a blast to drive being a two stroke. I used to have a 2005 Raptor 660 and I loved it. My brother in law has a 700 grizzly and that thing is a beast. Way more power than you need in a quad.

My daughter has an ex400. Great quad.
I used to have a raptor660 another great quad. The earlier 400ex don’t have reverse though or that’s important to you.
The raptor is much more powerful obviously.

Are you a big and tall kinda guy? I'm 6' 3" and the Raptor fit well with how big of a bike they are. There's the YFZ450 but they are lower and smaller. More of a racing style bike. Check out Ostacruiser on YouTube, those crazy canadians build some gnarly Can Am quads.
I've got a '97 Banshee that needs a full rebuild, they are a blast but not for trails and stuff. I'd build the one have more as a sand and desert go-fast bike.

Had a raptor 660.
Brutal power. But you just can't toss them around like a the 400ex/250r. 400ex is a slightly updated 250r frame.
Basically the one in the same.
And the Honda 250R is widely recognized as the best handling atv frame ever built.
All depends on what kinda riding you do. I got my raptor for high desert dunes in Colorado. It was great for that.
If I were to do it again I'd go shee all the way.
They are just so f'in crazy.

I'm a huge fan of the 400ex, especially if your riding with the kids, they take a beating, have enough power to be fun, and don't mind being lugged while riding with kids. My 06 had reverse which was very nice. I ran that quad in the dunes a bunch and lots of woods. It was an excellent machine.

Seems like a pretty pointed consensus here. And yes, riding with the kids and the wife. They've got their own 125 and 50.

I had a 700 Grizzly, and I loved it. Gobs of power, would pull nearly 70 mph and feel stable. It was not a $2000 machine though.

Yamaha used to make the wolverine. Kind of a sporty 4x4. No racks. But I think it was only a 350. A little on the small side anymore.

Not a manual, but my King Quad 700 with 26's is pretty sporty for what it is. And enough power to pull a trailer or push a snow plow. Plus it's big enough to not feel small under my 6'3" frame.

There is always the arctic cat Thundercat 1000 H2 . Only 4x4 utility machine that could pull a wheelie like a clutched sport quad.
Think they only made them for a few years so finding one might be tough.
But it's sounds like you should pop on that 400ex.
That's a reasonable deal for 1500/2000

I have an arctic cat 700efi. It’s not quite as rowdy as the 650v-twin but it will wheelie if you yank it hard.

The 660 spawned a whole bunch of sport qaud 700s, kawi had a brute force 700 and then finally a Honda 700xx.

I rode a Honda 700xx with the IRS and it was pretty nice. But I'm Honda fan boy from way back so I don't count.

Honda fanboy here too. My dad was a Honda mechanic back in Ohio before we moved to Vegas. Only motorcycles I ever owned were Honda. Except for a ‘91 zx-7 ,
my Raptor and the Arctic cat. I’ll still fight someone that Honda made the most reliable stuff….

They aren't always the fastest. But you can drive them off a cliff all day ans they won't miss a beat.

First quad was the warrior. Great bike and for tight trails or rocking terrain, it’s nice. Smooth ride, low gears, reverse, all day machine. Hopped it up but wanted more. Bought a completely different sport quad lol 450R. Kick start, abusive suspension, thin seat, no reverse. When you ride em hard, they shine.

For my 6’, I’d do the 450R again in a heartbeat. New trail quad…maybe a raptor or Suzuki 400 flavor. Water cooled and reverse is a bonus
