Step back and take a deep breath. start over from the beginning. check the timing real close, Charge up the battery fully. double check the valve lash.check the plug wires for correct wiring.Check the spark for intensity. Motors can be a real pain...........you will get it, Just take your time......................................

[/ QUOTE ]Told you that you would get it /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

again, THANK YOU EVERYONE, although no one specifically said "check the coil" mudjunkie, you did call to my attention the spark intesity, which i remembered looked weak, THANK YOU ALL!!

CK5 ROCKS!

Glad you got it , a little perserverance pays off . You will remember it , and thats how most of us learn . I want to see wheeling pics as soon as shes ready /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Good work!!!!!!!!!
You've learned something good from this and no one can ever take that from you!!!!!!!!! Hangin' in there paid off off big time!!!I know you had a wide smile when she came to life!!! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

finally went back and broke her in. still overheats, so i didn't try to drive it home, gonna change oil tomorrow.

I LOVE IT, it's cammin like hell /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

kinda dissappointed in the power, well, extremely dissappointed, but i guess not have the vacuum advance hooked up, and having no idea what it's timed at kinda hurt that a little (ton) . . . I guess it's right around 0.

so tomorrow when i set the timing, take it to about 1500, with vacuum advance hooked up and take her to about 14-16* ? or what would ya'll recommend?

I'll take my $5 now. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

If it was backfiring out the carb, it was not timed right. No question there. Bad coil or not, with no spark it couldn't have caught the carb on fire.

You're dispappointed with the power because it's still not timed right. What a shocker.

New engines are kinda like that,,,,You just spent big bucks and a lot of time getting it running,,and you expect it to produce all sorts of power on the first drive, but most of the time it kinda disapointing.

Untill you get it broken in,valves adjusted right,(Tim) "timing set properly", all vacumm leaks sealed off, carb adjusted,it may "feel" sluggish. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Give it time, make all of your adjustments in small incriments and only ONE at a time so you can tell if that adjustment helped. If you make a BUNCH of adjustments you can't tell which one helped or not. take your time and it will all come together. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

BTW, you say it's "Cammin like hell",,,could it be that it's OVER cammed??? /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Depending on axle gearing, tire size, converter stall(if automatic)carb size, intake type, and other things, the cam profile you selected may "HURT" your performance if it was not selected to work with the other components in the truck.

In other words,,a big high lift long duration cam in a 5500 lbs truck with 3.08 gears and 35" tires is not going to perform very well at all.
It may "sound " good at idle and lope like hell but will never perform in this combination. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

BTW 2.73's / 282 .465 cam /800cfm carb, no wonder,,,,

wrong, and right. it was backfiring, about a week and a half ago. then was when it was 180 off. it hadn't been backfiring ever since i put the distributor back in right.

I went and set the timing today, 15* at about 2000rpm.

one plug wire had come loose too.

NEVERMIND, it's got very very good power. I actually put the stock Qjet back on until I can afford an edelbrock or holley 600. I like it guys, after i plugged that wire back up and set the time, cranked the idle up a little it runs great, doesn't jump when put into gear, cammin a little less, but still lopes, and gives me all the giddeeyup i want, now i need a tach and oil pressure and temp GAUGES not warning lights.

oh it wasn't overheating- some jackass had put dexcool in the truck when they owned it. it mixed with the antifreeze left in my motor and foamed up and it was that foam spraying. i added water a few timeds till it all steamed off and now it runs great. too bad i took the thermostat out before i figured that out. doh!

Well then , why waste money on a carb then . Buy the gauges , and then get other goodies . /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

A man once told me, 'Son, there's no magic in there.'
You need some diagnostic tools. A timing light will tell you if your timing is where you think it is. If the timing's right, you can feed it fuel by hand (carb cleaner, not gasoline, and be sure what you use is flammable) 125psi sounds weak but I don't know what cam you have etc. Even if the cam is a tooth off it should stay running. If the timing's right and it has fuel, be sure the plugs aren't wet-just because they're new doesn't mean they're working. Recheck the firing order.
One problem I've seen which could start wars, is leaving the drive key out of the harmonic balancer-the first time the engine sneezes or revs hard, the balancer comes out of time and you have no reference.
You have spark, you have compression. You can add fuel manually. if you have these things, and not one cylinder fires, it can be only two things-fouled plugs or incorrect timing.
