6.2 Diesel - Rear engine vibration

I felt bad for having to post that first comment, but I'm glad it worked out.

Not at all! It's a good thing you did or I wouldn't have gotten on changing it out so fast.

But of course now that I got a little further down the road I realized the truck isn't level, so putting a zero rate in the back and a hanger drop in the front once I get out of the office this afternoon. Any progress is good progress though!

So--how different does the truck feel being an manual VS the 700R4 now?...does the engine feel more gutsy?..acceleration any quicker?...been wondering just how big a difference it makes ..the only 6.2 with a SM465 I got to drive was a C-30 ramp truck, which was no speed demon anyway, but it got the job done..

I know my 6.2 & TH400 combo in my K2500,along with what seems like really high ratio axles ,makes it a slug taking off or climbing hills, even empty!...I've never taken a diff cover off to verify the ratio,to me it feels like 3.08's,not sure if 14 bolts came with highway gears though..

I have yet to drive my 85 Burb with a 6.2 & 700R4 on the street, but I can feel the difference in first gear just driving it 150 feet up my driveway, that has 3.73's and is a 1/2 ton too though..it needs tranny work unfortunately, and though I know converting an automatic to manual sucks,(I did that to a '72 K5 years ago,a TH350 to A SM465) ..

--I am still tempted to go that route,or at least put a TH400 in it,I'm not fond of 700R4's,if I had a chance to buy one that works good I would pop it in and live with it though..I'm not up to doing tranny and engine swaps like I once could ..If my burb was a barn door model and had a little better body I'd like be more likely to get "crazy" with it and make it a manual, but I'd be happy just to get it driveable and registered right now, before it ends up being a "yard truck only"...

I'll absolutely let you know once I do! So far the only movement is forward into my alley about 15 feet, then back. Need some more fender trimming to be able to turn out the street. :D I'm actually on my way down to Bozeman to pick up my shocks and some cutout flares tomorrow, so should be driving early next week.

The problem is, is that I've made too many changes at the same time so I'll be a little hard to tell what's made the biggest difference:

700R4 becomes SM465
NP208 becomes NP205
Corp10/4.10 becomes D60&70/3.54
33x10.5-15 becomes 38x15.5-16

I'm jaded too, I always found the 700R4 was a sloppy tranny. I like the over drive on the hwy, but the shifting wasn't great, and especially the downshifts drove me nuts despite how many times I adjusted the detent cable - hence the move to the SM465.

I'll update early next week once the rest is sorted out and I've got a few miles on it.

So you went from a 4.10/33" to 3.54/38" ?
Now your 465 just became an overdrive.
and did your axles come from a dodge?
3.54 is not a common GM ratio but a dodge and Ford.

Well now that I'm lifted and rolling (kind of) took it out for a few laps around the neighbourhood. Runs great! Feels a lot tighter. The throttle seems more responsive. Definitely a good move in my opinion. Seems like I can take a lot more advantage of the Banks also, keeping the RPM up into the better boost range when accelerating.

Yep the axles are out of a Dodge. I can definitely say I'm not likely to use my 4LO as much. With the crawl gear, even in first, between the torque of the 6.2 and the low gearing in the SM465 I literally can't stall the thing. I'm a little worried about what my RPM is going to look like on the highway, but time will tell. I've got a diesel tach installed just have to finish the wiring for it and the rest of my cluster; hoping to get that done today. I was considering regearing the axles to a 4.10 or so but I wanted to see the response and RPM range with the new tranny first. Indications are I might be leaving the axles just as they are...

Any rotating part of any engine can be balanced to run on any other engine that it will fit. All depends on how many buckets of $$$$$$$$$ you want to throw at the problem. Ever put a 427 BBC flywheel on a 454 BBC, hope you don't like your fillings.

That poor truck is gonna be SLOOOOWWWWWWW lol!

I ran a 700r4, 3.08s and 35s on a NA 6.2L once. It took 12.5km to get it up to 98km/h, which was as fast as it'd go with the pedal on the floor, lol I swapped an NV3500 in and while I could get it up to 105km/h without the transmission losses OD was totally useless and it would loose speed if you ever put it into 5th matted at highway speed.

I later swapped it to 4.56 and put a turbocharger on it. Then it boogied, lol

Actually over at a buddy's place putting the shocks in right now. From the 18km or so drive over here I can say that it's got more pick up than it used to. And keeping in mind that the poooooorly rigged crossfeed to my turbo is leaking so bad the turbo isn't spooling up at all. And of course not hitting it too hard so the jack in the box head I was driving didn't get out of control. See how it spins once I get it back from the exhaust shop.

Well you're not wrong! Great on the trail, pretty slow on the hwy. Not terrible though as long as I can keep it up in the boost range. 1 to around 35, 2nd to 70 or 75, and 3rd anything else. Frick on the hills though... there are a few steep ones on 22 coming back into Calgary that had me down to 70 or so. On the small/med ones the boost kicks in and my EGT gets over 1k but I can keep the speed at least in the 90s.

Not sure if I'd go higher on the axle gearing just yet. 4.10s maybe, not sure I'd go all the way to 4.56. Need to make sure it'll still get up to hwy speed without the engine killing itself.

Time will tell!

Your posts need a disclaimer in your sig line... "Warning, all units of measure are Metric" :doah: Took me a while to figure out that you were not talking about 90 MPH.

:haha:

I'm not sure what would happen first at 90mph... Either the engine would explode or the springs would bounce me right off the hwy!

Have to wire in the speedo sender for my new gauge. Once I do I'll be off the kmh GPS I'm using right now and onto the mph only gauge. Soon, no disclaimer needed.
