6.2 questions. Diesel owners me pick your brain good

This engine family, designed by GM division Detroit Diesel, was produced by GM through 2000, when it was replaced by the new Duramax line.

Yep nothing about detroit diesel division of GM producing the engine. I mean when it's a detroit engine and all why would they create it? lol. It is technically a detroit engine since detroit did actually design it while part of GM. semantics? no it's just fact.

Just because someone created the parts and everything it's who designed it not who carries parts. Go look under the hood of a 93 dodge stealth and tell me what engine is powering it. Just help the man with his questions.

6.2 would be a great option for powering your project. That will make for some great torque and something you would be able to drive if needed!

...and at no time in the span of years that it was produced could you take a 6.2 or a 6.5 to a Detroit Diesel Distributor and have warranty work completed on the engine. Like you could with any vehicle that has a Detroit Diesel engine in it.

Martin

Go take a dodge stealth to a mitsubishi dealer and ask them the same thing on that vehicle. What's your point? You warranty things to the dealer who supplied them and let them deal with the rest. Go take your Bosch power tool to the company who produced the electric engine in them for power... Not going to work.

Seriously enough of this. Like I said 3 times already. I dont care and to be quite frank I dont think anyone else does either. I'd like to see you try to take a Dodge into a Cummins dealer and get it warrantied. Good luck.

You can take any vehicle with a Detroit Diesel engine in it to a Detroit Diesel Distributor and have it worked on. Regardless of the vehicle manufacturer.

Technically speaking the only reason you can no longer find parts for a 6.2 is that in 2000 or so detroit simply turned into an on-road trucking industry solely. They had no reason to carry GM parts since GM was still around. Besides no warranty on a product 17+ years old. Even in the "Detroit" line of warranty's.

Go try to get parts to your old 53 series engine and tell me how that works for ya.

OK, that's enough. The next side tracked, semantics, hair splitting, thread hijacking comment gets nuked. The original poster is still looking for more info, not more bullsh!t.

This GM vs. Detroit vs. 6 legged aliens in Mexico could go on for pages without resolution.

It's done. :deal:

Stomis. To get back to the questions. I really think you've got things pretty well figured out. All I would probably add would perhaps be a gated turbo and call it a day. Of course every thing you can do to increase reliability would be a good thing.

Both of my trucks being diesel have always only had to do the safety part of inspection here in jersey. But jersey just did away with the safety part of inspection, which means neither of my truck have to be inspected anymore. The chevy would only have to have the tilt test redone IF I changed the tire size or life size. At least that's my understanding of how its going to work from now on.

You know how things go here in the garden state :doah:, anything can happen.

As for buying a motor, you should be able to get one around 500-600 bucks. Maybe a little more if its a really low mileage one. But if you're planning on pulling the heads off at least, I would just look for something that still runs and hasn't had any major issues. Course putting a fresh pump and injectors isn't a bad thing to do if you don't know the age or mileage of the engine. It'll run a ****-ton better with just that stuff replaced.

i found this and thought some would get a good laugh out of it.

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs

6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ..

Another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb forum

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty

5 People to post pics of their own light bulbs

15 People to post "I can't see S***!" and their own light bulbs

7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

13 to say "do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"

1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that George W. Isn't the brightest bulb.

4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.

1 moderator to lock the light bulb thread.

:haha::haha::haha::haha::haha::haha: amazing how true that thread was. Im sorry if this is hijacking but it was too funny to not post.

O I know I saw it coming too... :doah:

Theres a few reasons I havent considered adding a turbo.

1) Reliability. I want something super reliable and pretty much stock.
2) I still have room to turn the pump up a little, add a nice straight pipe exhaust, and a J manifold and probably pick up 30-50hp not to mention the torque from these little changes over a smog motor
3) Space. The s10 is gonna be cramped with that motor in there as it is. Adding a turbo and possibly an intercooler would make my life that much worse, plus increase cost.

KirsL I know they did away with saftey but does this mean that diesel trucks just outright dont need to be inspected now or that you still have to go and have them say "O its a diesel? here a sticker"

You do NOT want a straight pipe!! my burb is and its so gawd awful loud I can't stand it I'm not even sure how I can drive it with out getting a ticket

No I know but I do want to run like dual 2.5s into a single muffler with a 4in out. Is dual 2.5s enough to let her breathe?

Yep more than enough , I have dual 2.5 straights on my burb and I think stock they had 2-1/4" IIRC

Thats what I'd do run 2.25" from the manifolds and Y into a 3" and run a 40 series Flowmaster it would sound good and mean but not too obnoxious

Yeah also gotta remember this truck is gonna have some serious highway time too.

I found a 40,000 mile remanned 6.2 out of an 88 for $450. Gonna call the guy and see if he still has it. If its got the accessories I might jump on it.

Still gotta call 84CUCV and see what he has kicking around. I'm sure he probably has something he might be able to hook my up with.

Thats a good deal, but I still think having a donor rig is the way to go that way you for sure get all the accy, and Glow plug wiring .

Buying just an engine could really nickel and dime you to death once you add up all the extra cost and time to chase down the stuff your missing.

One more thing to consider , is mating up the NV3500 I/E getting the proper clutch .
It may be a non-issue I've never messed with a NV3500 but you may want to look into it closer

I think Russel had an NV3500 in one of his rigs with a diesel might ask him

I'm just gonna ask russell about that one he had the 6.2/nv3500 setup in his truck at one point. I really dont think it will be an issue.

As far as wiring I was just gonna do it from scratch. Need 12v to the fuel cutoff to start with the key forward, timed 12v to the glow plug for what say 10 seconds on ordinary start up and an on override switch for cold days.

As far as alternator and ac compressor go the body harness will stay to hook those up. How about tach? Hows that work? Need an alternator driven one?
