6.5 swap (parts gathering phase)

The guy said he put royal purple in it. I know that's supposed to be magical oil but I'm not sure it's the correct stuff. I looked at the RP website, they show they have some oil for dodge nv4500. I'm going to buy the GM stuff and change it right now. Then I'm going to get it rebuilt, or at least inspected, before it goes into the 'burb.

I'm going to use the truck to help me move, about 4 hrs away. After I get to my new house then I'll yard that stuff out and put it in the garage. I may as well rebuild the motor too. I really want this to be done right. I can still go wheeling while I get the new motor/tranny ready. I've been reading alot on here and have gotten interested in new studs, high quality gaskets, gear drive, higher flow water pump, and also a girdle kit. I don't know much about it yet but I want the thing to last.

How much more turbo can you put on it before it gets unreliable? I was reading stock is a GM-3, but you can get like a GM-8. I would of course like to explore some performance :-) Of course, after I rebuild it it'll probably run better and I won't want it as much.

Are these injectors for real? Seems cheap.

Should I mount the PMD elsewhere?

The only lube that is OK for the NV4500 is the stuff you can get at a GM dealership, or a Dodge dealership. It is made by Castrol...

Nobody else carries it or makes it, and it's a GL-4 lube which is a pretty outdated 'standard'.

Check the RP site, I bet you their lube for the NV4500 is not GL-4. If it isn't GL-4 it'll mess up the tranny in short order.

Be prepared to pay through the ass for the correct lube. I paid $21/qt for the correct GM lube for mine. I won't run anything else.

ARP head studs are a very good idea, standard FelPro head gaskets are fine, I'd skip the gear drive and just replace the timing chain with a new one. The high flow water pump is only worthwhile if you get the dual t-stat housing as well. Also the girdle kit is not a great idea unless you're planning to have the block align honed when you rebuild it. Replacing the outside bolts with studs messes with the block's geometry . . .

GM-8 is a small improvement over the GM-3, requires a custom wastegate control as stock is vacuum as opposed to the GM-3's spring loaded w/g. Changing turbo's will not affect reliability at all, but if you start adjusting the wastegate for higher maximum boost you want a pyrometer on there so you can monitor exhaust temperature.

Should I mount the PMD elsewhere?

The nice thing about a '93 is that you don't have a PMD on your injection pump :wink1:

I scored another piece for my swap! Found a passenger drop 241 with mechanical speedo for $350 right here in Rifle. I found a new mechasnic too, he is a chevy nut and has a warehouse full of 'ol parts! There's one little plastic electrical fitting, is that for the 4wd light?

:D I know I was gonna tear this truck down like 3 years ago but life got in the way and plus it's just been way too damn handy to have around. :D

So could you update on the trans?? Did you change oil or?? Is it still noisy?

Prolly not anytime soon. Just wanted to blather about my new part! I looked for a long time, with no luck, for a 241 with mechanical speedo then just stumbled on one when I wasn't looking for it. :woot:
I've have been daydreaming about how awesome a 6.5/NV4500/241 will be in the old beater.
The low end torque!:D
The unambiguous shifting of the transmission and transfer case!!!:D:D
The 2.72 low range!! :D:D:D

I did end up buying the specific castrol oil that goes in the 4500. It was expensive as hell. The transmission has not changed at all. Still works and shifts great. Still noisy in every gear except 4th. I still want to have it gone through before I install it in the 'burb.

Never changed the fuel injectors either but still want to. Since I've had this truck I've learned to drive and keep one eye on the passenger's mirror. If I see black smpoke it's time to ease up...

I replaced 3 bad glow plugs and that made it alot easier to start. It still pretty much needs to be plugged in if it's so much as chilly outside.

Sounds like a normal 6.5L to me :D

I'm swapping mine out for a Duramax / ZF6 manual transmission at the moment :D

Good to hear from you! You talked me into that 241:laugh: Do you have a thread going for your swap? If so I want in on it, sounds like a really cool project! I will probably need alot of counseling when I start my swap (whenever that happens):haha:

...

I did this swap into my CC a few years ago.
downpipe was custom, and I reused the original NP205 with the help of a adavance adapters plate.

noise in the nv4500 in all gears but 4th.

4th is direct. so no load through the counter shaft in 4th. all other gears load through the countershaft. Sounds like unhappy countershaft bearings in your case.

Nice thing is nv4500 suuuuper easy to rebuild.

Thanks for the info!
I'm going to have it rebuilt, I've never opened a transmission in my life and don't want to foul it up. The guy told me the original transmission went out and they pulled this one from another truck, so who knows what the miles are or how long it sat....

Subscribed. If you like this truck so much, maybe you should do a SAS on it instead.

I just bought a similar truck with similar ideas. The truck is in nice shape and it is probably just as easy to SAS than put everything into an older truck. Just throwing that out there .

Sold the bed!:woot:Used the money to get an ARB for the '73.

Getting closer to engine pullin' time!

Looks so funny without the bed

Its fun having 3 but the registration fees suck

If you use the NP241 or an NP208, you can grab driveshafts from any 81+ 3/4 ton burb with an NP208 or NP241 (auto or standard does not matter, they are all the same length) and bolt it straight in with the NV4500 / NP241 combo using your 1 ton diffs. I used the 81+ truck transmission crossmember and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was an exact fit with the NV4500's mount, only required drilling 4 holes in the frame to mount it. Most difficult part of the swap is the master cylinder / clutch pedal install. I personally custom fabbed it using the 93's master cylinder with a custom installed stud on the clutch pedal, but I have heard rumours that the master cylinder for the 85+ trucks, burbs etc with hydro SM465s works just fine with the NV4500's slave cylinder (which would be a heck of a lot easier to install, and would make for far less pedal effort than my truck has). If you need a set of hydro pedals, let me know as I have a spare set sitting in my parts stash.

If you run into any problems, lemme know and I can tell you what I did to get around it.

I gotta start this swap soon. We're moving in a few months and I can not take a parts vehicle along.

I found somebody on CL that I may be able to get a 6.2 rad and hydro brake booster from.

Russ, you wouldn't happen to have those hydro pedals anymore would ya?

Before you rip out the engine and tranny, you MUST treat yourself to a few
burnouts with the bed off first!.:D..its great fun and nothing beats watching the duallies smoke when you floor it...with no weight back there you can spin them in every gear probably, with little chance of hurting anything except the tread depth on the tires..when I took the fleetside bed off my 1974 C-10 with a 454 & Th400,I drove it to the place where the "new to it" bed was..

I had a blast burning the tires off it all the way up to 60 mph...felt like a top fuel dragster with no bed on it.:D..stopping it was SCARY though, someone cut me off in traffic ,and I learned quickly a truck with no bed SLIDES instead of stopping!..darn near soiled myself,I missed the dumba$$ by about 2"!..:eek1:

I may have to try that. :D:waytogo:

I can tell you this, I drove it 65 miles home with no bed and it bounced so much I about got sick!
