64 Vette….Rebuild 2.0

I like the 427 SB idea :thumb:

BBs are cool. But a car that light really doesn't need one.
Technically, if you want to piss off a vette purist you put a big block in a '64 since the rat didn't debut in production until '65.

But a big block displacement small block is a really cool idea to have in that car.

Correct….and my frame is from a 65, so the scalloped front crossmember is already there for the BBC too!

Evidently 110 gas doesn’t like the rubber oring on the fuel sender in the bottom of the tank….I found a big puddle of gas under the car….pumped out the tank with this slick pump, and will have to find a more durable oring. Anybody got a link for an oring specialist supply joint?

I'd be totally game for that, I just thought a mild big block would break the new axles, ha ha. I'm always on board for big blocks!
 
Haven't had a chance to take it apart yet…want to get it on the lift, not fond of rolling around on the ground anymore!
hopefully I can get to it middle of next week.
 
You know, an aluminum block 427 would be even cooler! So light....
Call it a "mystery motor" recovered from a '64 factory lightweight Impala Z11 that was sent to race at Daytona. Call it the experimental first big block Corvette ever produced.

The purists would cry fowl for sure.
 
If all he wants is a 427 then I vote small block (aluminum would be bitchin').

If he's going to build a big block, might as well be at least a 4.25" stroke.
 
Aluminum head SB 427 would be less weight than I have now.
Should be easier to get the car moving on my narrow tires. Fender limited!
Will be talking to my machinist next week.

Sb427 with one of the carburetor looking efi units under the air cleaner :D

An aluminum head big block would not be much heavier than what you currently have, and much cooler than any lame small block could ever dream of being……

I think a big inch small block would be cool. You could easily get 500 - 600 hp out of one on pump gas without too much effort. Or even 700 if you want to push the the race parts on pump gas. But you may need an aftermarket block or a small journal crank and rods at a minimum with a 400 block to get to a 427.

My 632 Iron Dart block with aluminum heads weighed 638 lbs intake to oil pan. The steel shaft rockers are heavy, the dart block is heavy. My 388 with iron heads and aluminum rockers weighed 488 lbs, aluminum heads would probably save ~50 lbs on a small block I would think. The big block is still way faster at the drag strip, but nose heavy.

However a 427 small block vs a 427 big block, I would take the small block, or stroke the 427 big block to a 489 or 496, ha ha

I like big block blocks, a small big block is just extra weight vs a large small block.
