64 Vette….Rebuild 2.0

Thanks guys, had a good day with Mom, daughter and granddaughter!
big ole bacon cheeseburger for lunch, a piece of chocolate cake, a couple oil changes in the barn w my grandaughter and watching a movie w her now. Blessed!

Thanks guys. The thoughts mean alot coming from you all!
Birthday was Friday, more celebration today with a family meal at an Amish restaurant in IN., and will be extending through Sunday, when my daughter is cooking italian pasta shells, italian bread, not sure what veggie, and then something chocolate (what else is there?) for desert, then some low stakes poker!
I got it pretty dam good!

Shop talk has it that a 4” stroke will pull the piston skirt out of the bottom of the cylinder bore.
Not good for the piston skirts longevity. Piston manufacturer recommendation is for the skirt on a 3 ring piston to still be in the bore by .250 at BDC. Some engine builders have used a 2 ring piston (one compression and an oil control set) to shorten the skirt. Either way piston rocking at BDC is a concern over 3.875 stroke.

Big block it is!

Or twin turbo the Cummins dually now that you have a dirtymax

:saweet::burnout:

Big blocks are badass, potentially make a ton of torque, which may not be a good thing for the longevity of the rear driveline. I’m hellbent on using the stock(ish) Vette setup, and some what narrow tires, so getting it off the line will be an obstacle to deal with, and big bottom end torque probably wont be my friend in that conquest. Spinning ain’t winning!
So the 60’ time will probably remain sluggish compared to a back halved car, soft launches will preserve parts, and I dont want to cut this car up for that purpose. I’ve seen a few midyears running in the mid 10’s on a hybrid 12 bolt rear diff and the same outer axles I’m running with 1480 halfshafts on slicks, and flared radiused fenders for tire clearance. Pretty cool, but now your getting close to 10k in the rear axle assembly. A back halved 9” would be much cheaper and reliable!
A tube chassis 64 C10 would be a tits up drag truck….
And compounding the Cummins isnt in the works either. Just getting that truck movable would be a huge accomplishment at this point in time!

I'd drag out the C10.

You pulled this thing out of the drag life and made it sweet. It'd suck to hit some other dudes oil spot and stuff a $70,000+ beauty into a wall.
Making a couple passes to see what it'd do is fun. But every run after that starts increasing the odds of a really, really, shitty day lol.

And the C10 would take a big block and back half with ease :D

Just suggesting my own opinion, which don't count because none of it's mine lol.

Yup!

And I get that thought too Rick.
BUT…The truck would be major $$$$$ and time. If a drag truck, I’d go all tube chassis/cage…no fukin around with factory anything but the body. that truck is a project with my grandson…who is nine. Thats kicked down the list under a few other majors.
The Vette is running, drivable, dependable, and just fukin cool... Its the oldest Vette on the track the days I’ve been there, and its the only midyear. Its get attention!
And its funnernhell. Really, its done, and the improvements to rear suspension/driveline should happen over the winter, with zero downtime (that may bite me in the ass). I would love to build another bigblock, but if its a race motor, it’ll be probably double what the Maiden 454 cost 12 yrs ago.
Ive also thought about pulling the Maiden engine to have some fun with in the Vette…BUT it would have to go back in the Maiden, nothing else will do!

While it's fun to bench race and for the rest of us spend your money on hair-brained ideas. In the end, it's your ride.

Get the rear axle fortified with the parts you got and go have fun. If you really want to scratch the big itch to go fast see if you can hit up a certain buddy of yours to hotshoe the Iron Monger for a lap or two.

Great plan!
cept theres no way I could get out of Kerts car if I did fall into it!
Dam wouldn’t that be fun though! I think his best was a 148mph.

I betcha if you made a lap in that beast you wouldn't want to get out. I know I wouldn't.
