6l90 converter and cooling mods. Who's done what?

That's right at double the stock cooler.

I'll put that in my save for laters.

Really, I think the stock one is up for the task, unless your in Arizona or mountain towing regularly :dunno:
I've never seen mine above 170-175.
That was towing in the heat on decent hills.
I could see where it may climb in stop and go traffic on a hot day. Never really checked it there that I recall.

We're talking about going halves on 'HP tuner' and some credits so we can do both big trucks, plus my wife's will be getting a small cam and DOD delete when I rebuild it. It also has a 6l80 (I think) that I KNOW has been over 200*.:doah:

I found it hard to find an upgraded stock replacement converter that wasn't ridiculously expensive. I ended up having to get the transmission rebuilt anyway so the trans shop sourced the converter through their suppliers. You'd think there would be a large enough market out there to have a large company mass produce an upgraded billet stock style converter.

I used HP Tuners for my 6L80 tuning and I have it pretty well dialed now. There's some good YouTube videos out there now that walk you through it.

He just went through O'Reilly's.
The one they had was supposedly a "stiffened" backplate...
He says if he gets 60k out of the truck he'll be happy. Lol

Just check your part number. I found out yesterday that the bastard that changed my converter for my 6l90 put a dang 6l80 converter in. Problem is that I am over 6000 miles later. I always thought that it was the np205 chattering. Now I think it is the damn converter.

Yeah it's mountain towing that gets to my trans.

Want to say the stall on my '12 6.2 6l80 is about 2200 rpm for your reference.

Well, crap.

Guess he'll just go with it.
But from what I've found, the GM factory torque converter part number 24245962 like he has, is a 2500 rpm stall.
He bought the 1400-1600 one from the recommendations here.

Chit :doah:
I hope it works alright.:dunno:

I talked to him about the converter, and he decided if it's bad, he'd have felt it, and we should see metal sparkles in the fluid.

He's going to cancel the new converter and run with the old one.

We dumped his converter through a paint strainer and got nothing. Not the slightest bit of anything.
Fluid was darker than new, but still red colored.
No black or silver swirls.

Were going to go halves on HP tuner, and program out the slip in both of our trucks.

And both of us intend on bigger coolers.

Should he run his current converter..... :dunno:
But he plans to lol.

He says mine has 150k on it and is fine. So he believes his will too. And he doesn't intend on having it when it hits 150k anyway.

All this converter talk has me paranoid. Lol.
Im pretty sure my wife's is a 6l80 and I know for a fact it gets over 200*.
We went somewhere a month or two ago and I was playing with the dash. Came across transmission temp and it was 203 just cruising down the highway. Not towing or anything.

Ya I wish I would have studied on the 6l80 more when I had that truck. I really liked that truck but an $8k transmission in a 168k mile truck didn't make financial sense at the time.

In my 01 I put a 180° t stat. Engine still runs rock solid 205° but trans drop an average of 10-15°. No check engine light either. At 115° it will get to 205-210° working. Stock cooler with Derale +2 qu cool pan. Plan on a larger cooler in near future. 4l80 trans.

My 72 K5 with a 2021 L8T and a 6l90E has a cheap Amazon Evil Energy cooler mounted in front of the radiator. When I first plumber it, It went from the trans to the cooler and back. The issue is that I could not even get it up to 160 degrees which is the temp that the trans adaptives start learning. I routed the lines from the trans to the cooler and then through the radiator transmission port and that made everything better. During the blazing hot temps this summer, the temps stayed around 160 degrees with mixed driving. It hovers around 145 -155 on the highway and in stop and go traffic it can reach about 180 degrees. I am pretty pleased with it. The only change that I would have made is perhaps a stat that allows it to heat up to operating temps faster. This winter, I may swap an un the lines directly to the radiator and bypass the cooler. I bet that the temps will stay about 200-205 degrees since that is where the motor stays.

Isn't 200 bad?
I read this recently-
For a 6L90 transmission, a normal operating temperature is generally between 180°F and 200°F (82°C and 93°C), though it can run as low as 100-110°F in some vehicles or as high as 205-217°F when under heavy load, according to discussions from various vehicle owners and mechanics. Temperatures exceeding 225°F (107°C) can indicate a problem, as prolonged exposure to heat can degrade transmission fluid additives and lead to premature damage.

Where is the best place to mount an aftermarket temp sender on a 6L90? My van doesn't have a readout on the dash.

You can get inline T's with a sender in them I believe.
Summit has them.
