Yeah, I used to have a picture I made of the 2 patterns overlayed on each other to show that you always have some pretty much touching. Of course, going to a 2-piece adds a 3rd pattern into the mix. That one is somewhat arbritrary, but also competes for the limited space on the adapter. Plus, you almost have to add 2" plus of offset to make it work.
The other downsides are that it's kind of like triple the work to service something like the brakes and if you break one, there's almost no hope of finding parts local (I suppose you should carry a whole spare adapter).
