700r4 blowout thread *ITS DONE!* :)

ppl with 4.88s always wish they had gone with 5.13s. ppl who get 4.88s dont know what they want (4.56 or 5.13), and after its all said and done wish they could take it back

yeah thats the general idea that I was getting which is why I was thinking 5.13's...its not even that big of a difference so I might as well go 5.13's...especially b/c I have OD...in fact 5.13's and my 38.5's would probably make my tranny very happy.

nope...called the shop today and he is getting ready to tear into it.
It was requested that he do mine so he is waiting...had a bmw to get done first before he got to mine.
Oooo and he is pricing out 5.13's and new bearings for my rear so he might just keep it an extra day and do that as well.

still working on it...they didn't start the day I dropped it off b/c he was waiting until he could do it like I said earlier...so its still moving along but its just a day or two behind where I thought it would be...:)
I'm getting anxious now...especially b/c its spring break and I'm truckless! I'd rather go a month of school time w/o it over not having it for spring break :)
But w/e...its getting fixed.

Avery, learn this lesson now. Sometimes in life, when you get what you want, there is a cost. Sometimes the cost is little, others great. Here you have a built tranny and the guy is installing it, with cooler lines, and regearing your truck with 5.13's, and all for under $1800. You probably got a warranty too, so I wouldn't complain. Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too, but this go around, you have to sufice for just the cake.

Putting that aside, I'm happy things are moving along and you are getting your truck fixed. Hope to see it up soon. Take pics or you will get barraged by smilies!

Manny

no it won't be under $1800 for gears too...it was $1540 for the new tranny, torque converter, transfer case drain/seal swap and labor for everything.
The driveshaft will be $200 so now we are up to $1740 and thats w/o gears.

We were asking around and wanted his opinion (we actually just asked who did his gears in the shop truck) and he said..."I did". So thats how we found out that his tranny/clutch shop also installs gears.
He is getting me a price quote on 5.13's, new bearings/master install kit and labor...
Fearless Gear wanted $900 for all of it (just in the rear) and he said that sounded a touch high so I'm assuming he'll come in right under $900 but I'll have to wait and see what he says.
I worked 10 hours today so I didn't have any time to call and ask. I'll check in w/ him tomorrow.

He called me today at work and said that it looks like it'll be next week before I get it back so thats no bueno.
He said it'll end up carrying over until monday...I wanted to say well then stay late friday! Its been a week now and you haven't even touched it! But I didnt'...:) I was nice and said ok, you gotta do what you gotta do.
He did offer me the use of one of his shop trucks though which I thought was nice and at first I felt a little weird but the more I thought about it...why not? He has my truck tied up for a week and offered so I think I'll take him up on it.
Oh and he said that for 5.13's, master install kit, labor and tax it'll be $842 and some change...so I think thats a pretty good deal...under $850 out the door installed.
So once I get more funds saved up I'll take it back to have the gears done.

Dude! Wait, hold on a minute...

That sounds way too high! I spent $325.00 on my GM 14 Bolt FF 4.56 R&P thick set and complete master Installation kit. It cost me $200.00 to regear. There is no way 5.13's could cost the additional $317.00 unless that's California for ya. Check around Avery, and see if that's the going rate, otherwise, you're being taken advantage of a little.

Manny

I agree 100%. I did the gears myself in my 12 bolt (I know it's not a 14 but the cost isn't that much more) and I think grand total was under 300. It's been a few years but i'm pretty sure that's what it was. If that's the case then that means he wants 542 for labor. I know it's not the easiest thing to do but you can have it done before lunch if you start right after breakfast. Definitely shop around. You probably shouldn't have told him that someone else wanted 900, you should have said 600 :D

What manny said, that is way way way too high!

no thats normal for around here...labor was like $450.
I've checked at numerous shops including his, fearless gear, 4 wheel parts (yeah I know :)), Whiplash, Full Throttle, etc and it has ranged from $850ish up to $1200....
Welcome to Cali brothers ;)

Okay Avery,

Just watchin' out for ya. If that is what Cali gets, then I'm feelin' mighty sorry for ya. That's a steep amount of cash for a gear change and you don't even get a freakin' locker with it! Ouch! Too bad you didn't have the cash for a detroit. But at cali prices, you prolly would have to sell yourself into servanthood for 7 years.

Manny

Sorry bro but all shops in cali dont charge that high. I would do a little more searching. I took my bare d60 to a shop called phantom offroad and got it put together for $350. I took the parts but labor was $350 to put the whole bare diff together. So search around.

$350 in labor...this shop is $450...thats not that big of a difference bro.
You brought them the parts, I'm buying the parts from them...so yeah its about the same but I'm open guys...anyone from central cali have a better deal? I'd love to eat my words :)

I just wish setting up gears wasn't such a bad place for a learning curve...

Well sorry buddy but to me a $100 is a difference. Im talking about a completely rebuilt diff. axles,seals,bearings,detroit,gears,u-joints,king pins etc. Your just talking about gears you do the math.:doah: But as I been reading since you installed your 3/4 running gear it is worthless trying to help you out and explaining things to you.
