700r4 blowout thread *ITS DONE!* :)

thanks guys...and yeah I don't have any problem dealing with the crap that gets flung my direction as it seems to be a national ck5 past-time or something but w/e...
I think that guys like jason (fireplug) just have issues with guys like jtrux who is a noob around here and jumps in on the lets verbally beat the piss out of every one of Avery's posts just b/c he sees everyone else doing it and has no freaking idea what the real story is...
that being said jtrux stfu and get out man...I hope that was clear enough. I mean honestly a guy takes his truck to a transmission shop and so you accuse him of not being willing to fix his own truck? haha you are a crack up man...I mean come on honestly think about what you are saying...

oh I forgot...as long as we are on this topic...will the 4.10 carrier hold 5.13's (maybe a thick set?)
Or will I need to find a 4.56 carrier?

You will need thick gears IIRC for your 4.10 carrier. Call Randy's ring and pinion, they have always been REAL helpful to me. They wil have a front/rear R&p kit with master install kits. Call for a price, I can't find one on their website, www.ring-pinion.com, but give them a call........

This is some interesting stuff!
Ok so I go by the shop to pick up their old shop truck (lil' '83 yota) so that I can have something to drive until he is done and he wanted to share what he found...
I had asked him earlier if he could replace the rear-main while he had the tranny out and he said that he only has the one piece seals for the GenII and up blocks and mine being an '85 is a two piece...well once he dropped the tranny he looked at it and its a one piece!
So he started investigating and found out that its a GenII block but its obviously not TBI so iono...weren't GenII blocks in '87 and up when they went to TBI?
Next weird thing...the tranny had 1987 stamped on it...so its a "2nd gen" 700r4...pretty weird huh? The truck has a salvaged title so who knows what happened.

He was going to pick up my new d-shaft and the new tranny is ready to go in...the only thing left is the transfer case...he said that they need to pull it apart and re-seal it and replace the seals. Oh also besides the rear-main that he is going to replace he said that he is going to replace the tranny mount b/c one of them was messed up.

He said that they might have it done by this evening but just to be safe for me to come borrow the pickup so I won't be stranded tomorrow for work and school. So it looks like tomorrow I'll have my truck back!

Ok next thing was gears and parts....you guys were right...I've been talking to RRP and those guys are great.
The other cool thing that I found out is that one of their three shipping warehouses is here in Fresno...so he said that whatever I want just tell him and pay for it but that I can go by the warehouse and they'll have a call tag on it so that'll save time.

As soon as I give him the go ahead he is going to have them pull aside a thick 5.13 set (so it fits in my 4.10 carrier), a master install kit and a detroit...I asked about the true trac but he said I'd be fine with just a regular detroit on the street and that it'll unlock when I let off the gas...:)

the only locker worth anything in a 14b is a full detroit. i drive mine on the street all the time and never have any issues.

I'm so proud of you Avery! Good job!

Manny

yep yep...I'm going to have to get a pic of this yota for you guys...its pretty funny :)
I almost need two of them...then I could strap them on like skates ;)

I'm going to tell the guys at school tomorrow that I traded him straight across for it...my truck for the yota. :)

I'm fairly sure the single peice seal started in 83, and score on the newer version of the 700r4!

You'll be very happy with the 5.13s and your size of tires, that truck will be way more powerful when you're done, and shouldn't be tearing transmissions up quite as bad either :D

hmmm interesting...I'll have to do some research and figure it out.

Yeah I'm sticking to 5.13's b/c I don't want to regreat it down the road...some of the local guys say not to go that low but w/ OD I'll be fine and it'll keep my options open for down the road...I might jump up to some 39.5" boggers my next go around b/c I'm going to Texas for college in a couple months and this truck is going to basically be a toy. The campus has everything I need so I won't be driving nearly as much as I do now...I do about 30 miles a day currently where as in texas I might do some driving on the weekends to go play in the mud w/ Manny but thats about it :)

I must say I'm surprised by the support for 5.13's given the low 1st gear of the tranny. But whatever, it won't be the end of the world either way. Good luck with the tranny tomorrow!

yeah but just b/c it has a low 1st doesn't mean that 3rd/4th aren't the same as other transmissions...its just a big jump from 1'st to 2nd ratios but other than that its the same as the AOD, 4L60/80 etc.
I've been basing my calculations on 3rd and 4th gear (mostly 4th) b/c almost all of my driving is highway driving right now and like I said in a couple months I'll be in Texas for college and it'll be just a toy at that point.

mmm ok. I'm definitely not trying to steer you away from them, I'm just surprised that they are getting 100% support.

thats what he said too...so iono what happened...
the truck has a salvaged title so it could have very well been wrecked and then had the body pannels and drivetrain replaced.
I wonder why they would take the time to swap in a TBI engine and 2nd gen tranny and not bring over the TBI stuff...unless they just got the block from somewhere...
I wish I knew the history of it. Do the Carfax reports just show regular maintenance or would it shed some light onto the salvaged title?

Hey Avery, I'm going to be installing 5.13's in the 14 bolt of my K5.

Here are the quotes I got for gears and a master install kit.

Randy's Ring and Pinion - Yukon gears: 385.97

Reider Racing - Precision Gears: 411.90

Drivetrain Specialists - Yukon gears: 342.00
- Precision Gears: 338.00

Why wouldnt they get full support? For the size tire he is running they are perfect for when he would be crusing at higher speeds, they will keep that motor in the power band and wont lug the motor/trans...

I think Avery is moving in the right direction :D

Yeah don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad choice, like I said I'm just surprised that they are getting full support. There are some reasons, but that isn't where this post needs to be going. :D

that seems like alot for gears. i bought my 5.13 thick gears for $220 from a company off ebay, bout a year and a half ago during the nation wide shortage. i also got my detroit for $375. guess prices have gone up. good thing im not going to be going with 5.13s again :)
