72 C10 - longbed muscle truck

The lifters will bleed down after the engine is shut off. Normal operation. They should start to pump up while cranking the engine, as soon as there is oil flow and cam movement.
It won't hurt it to prime it again, but I wouldn't say that it is a must do. If you have the primer tool, why not? Since you pulled the distributor, you aren't causing much more work.

So I put the engine back in yesterday after resealing the intake and valve covers. I did not put oil in it or crank it until just a few minutes ago. I used permatex ultra black on the intake this time and installed oil pan gasket and valve covers dry. I cranked it up and let it run outside for about 10 minutes, got it up to operating temp and then it started raining and the hood isn't back on yet so I had to pull it back inside but I am not seeing any visible leaks yet. Got my fingers crossed and knocking on wood. I guess i really won't know until I drive it and get it up to some rpm but I am praying for no leaks. It seems like getting an engine to seal is just hard for me. Ive always had bad luck with gaskets. On my old 76 blazer I have changed the trans pan gasket like 6 times and it still leaks...

Update. Today was test drive day, but before that I wanted to check the timing again with my light. Turns out the timing was way advanced, I think when I put the light on it last time, I thought I was seeing the timing mark but I wasn't. It was running like 16 degrees advanced. Set it back to 12 and what do you know, fixed the hot start problem, cranks right up now and runs better. I suspected this was the problem. So victory there. I got 2 drops on the ground last night no bigger than a dime each so, victory there. Not quite sure where they are coming from. One drips off the starter and one off one of the tranny cooler lines. Ideas? They are so small i'm not concerned with them at the moment. Going to move on to some other stuff first like a holley carb and new back tires. The only other thing I noticed today driving the truck was that its ticking under load. If its in park and I rev it I can't hear it but if you put it in drive you can hear it while accelerating and idling. It could very well be as simple as an exhaust leak because I reused the header gaskets, though they are only a few weeks old. Also could be a rocker arm tapping, I haven't investigated but there weren't any ticks before I pulled the engine. Ideas on what to check first? Overall its running strong and sounds good. Oil pressure is normal. Im happy. One more question, this may sound stupid but am I ok to still run 87 octane gas? Or should I run 93? My first thought was that to low octane fuel may be causing the ticking but that may be a far shot. Let me know what y'all think.

If you're getting new back tires...

Take the old ones, and

:burnout:

On video.

Please

So I fixed the ticking I was hearing. It was an exhaust leak from the driver side header gasket as expected. Truck is running great. No more hard starting when hot and I'm enjoying it again. Going to buy some tires next week. Question for you guys, would you think I could safely run 275/60s on my 15x7 rally wheels? I thought I had 8 inch wides but turns out they are 7. If not what is a similar tire size that is about 28 inch inches tall and good and wide?

Great truck. On the starter thing, if you end up needing one in the futer, the 90s vortecs from about 95 up run a small high torque unit. I usually find them for about $120-140 at the local parts stores. I've been running the same starter through 4 motors in three different trucks now without any problems. But I'm glad that it seems to have been just a timing issue.

Well I've been driving the truck all weekend. Im really enjoying driving it again. Its running great. Just ordered a Holley 4160 carb. Decided to hold out on tires until I can find some 15x8 wheels. They look so much better and I can run the staggered setup that I want. 275/60s on the rear and 255/60s on the front. Hopefully going to find some soon and paint them and then buy 4 new tires to put on them. Found a set tonight for 150 with trim rings and caps that came off an 85 2wd suburban. Called the guy and left a message asking if they are 15x8. Going to pick them up tomorrow if they are.

Got my Holley installed today. All I had to do was adjust the idle speed. It seems to be perfectly set up. Truck is running so much smoother and is so much more responsive. I can floor it from a stop and there is no bog, and it will burn rubber at will. Need to get a pin for my lockdown cable to mount to and also need the correct TC return spring and bracket, but it's already worlds better. I gotta get the 3.73s in here asap. Truck actually feels powerful now.

So I've got the holley dialed in pretty well. Haven't done anything new, just been driving and enjoying the truck. Have put over 100 miles on it in the last week or so since I fixed the oil leaks etc. Picked up this cool old license plate yesterday for the front of the truck.

I dropped the truck off at the bodyshop my buddy works at on Monday, getting him to fix the holes in the doors left by the square body mirrors that were on the truck when I got it. Truck has been running pretty good, drove it to the lake last Friday. Only problem I'm having is my gauge lights flicker when the headlights are on.

Picked it up today. Bodywork on the doors turned out nice. Here's a shot of the passenger side. Paint matches pretty good. I'm probably the only one who will ever know a repair was made. I'm just happy to have no more holes in my doors.

Looks good!
I love that colour of green!

New shoes, decided to go with 255/70s all the way around. I thought 275/60s in the rear would look to small with this truck not being lowered. I'm digging the white letters. Also got new wheels, got a good deal on a set of freshly painted 15x8 rally's and rings.
