72 K5 "About Time". Windshield Header Bow time.

I think he's saying he sold it for $35.

Honestly, great condition hatches off of the top are probably the most valuable part (to the right person).

Unfortunately the hatch needs a bit of fiberglass work around the hinges. Little cracks off the corners where the hinge bolts in. Otherwise darn near perfect.

Haha yes now I see the equation. Missed it! I see the trend here. Not quite as valuable as I was led to believe.

I sold my double wall hard top last month for 300 and put that directly towards a soft topper. I'm super happy with that decision.
Also a few years back I took bikini top for a cj7 and made that work for running around in the summer. Nothing is better than that topless feeling :saweet:

Haha, exactly right. The hatch was about the only valuable part.

Darn!

Well we all love when they are topless...

All reinforcing my thoughts. Thanks!

lWell I had a bit of time finally this weekend. Its hard where to focus your attention when there are so many things to do. I know I have a lot of flange repair. Mostly all along the driver side a pillar and windshield area. I knew a stretcher and Shrinker would help me greatly. My "shop" is not mine. It is in my inlaws garage. Where we currently are temporarily residing is a garage-less condo. So, I needed a mobile but heavy metal working area for the metal manipulations. A trip to the steel yard and a few hours of welding, I have my place to work on wheels!

I definitely wanted to get something done so I finished up my last 2 small patches under the drivers seat. I didn't get to drilling the holes or welding up the reinforcement plate because I ran out of steam and found myself at the local bar where my sister-in-law tends bar watching the giants game! Felt good being in the garage yesterday and today!

Nero comes and makes sure I am not doing anything cool without him!

Spent a some time this weekend peeling back a little bit more of the proverbial onion. Some of the door weatherstrip flange was rotted along with where the kick panel hits the A pillar. There is one more spot up high that I will get to another time. This allows me to clean up the A pillar and keep it from rusting inside out. When I get to replacing the kick panel the cab vents will not be going back.

Not a ton of progress had a couple hours in the garage. Happy to have the kick panel in there. You never realize how much the firewall could flex without that.

I have been keeping track of the measurements as I go along to make sure I don't have anything fall out of shape.

No more cab vents on the kick either!

Hopefully before Christmas I'll finish up that door flange and the rest of the kick panel to the cowl. Everyone who stops by says oh....takes a long time huh? Lol they have no idea.

Looking good man.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I like the kick panel vents. When it gets hot, getting a little air down there is nice.

I see the benifit of that for sure. But.....my plan is to throw the vintage air system in there. The one that uses all the original controls but everything is under the dash. Nothing on the firewall. The Mrs loves the sun and heat but if she can't jump in the water or turn the ac on she can get cranky lol. So for those stuck in traffic moments the ac will be a must.

If I get a huge portion of a floor I'm working on laid on Friday I am hoping to spend some time in the garage this weekend. Of course I need to pick up more argon in my travels tomorrow. This is another weekend of what did you do? Lots of grinding ahead of me with my miles of spot welds to smooth out. At least I'll be able to get some "Royken Green" on them if I deal with it.

Something I noticed on a few pics and the cancer page bumped up by Greg. That stupid gap by the A pillar into the rocker box. Should I try to manipulate this small but damaging opening and tack it closed or should I just seam seal it? Anyone improve on this over the years?

Well I had some productive time this weekend. There were areas where the a Pilar as paper thin. If I grabbed the windshield frame and put pressure on it, it would creak. Now nothing. Everything is firmer. Can't wait to fill it all back in.

A good feeling was when the wife came to check on me she said "wow. Looks so much better! You have gotten so much done" that means a lot since to the untrained eye it's like I haven done a thing. To the restorer lots have been done!

A pillar swiss cheese filled in!

Ok guys. I have had my 72 for a bit over a year. I'm excited I have decided to do it all the way. I spent some time talking with my friend I don't get to see to often(he's a restoration guy) and we were talking about my build. So to keep me motivated I put a bunch of my plans which haven't changed much in the last 12 months to paper. It changed in the first 3 months drastically but pretty much all of 2015 I've been thinking what I wrote. As always I am always learning about the suspensions. That is where my knowledge lacks a bit. I have been listening to all of the ride quality issues and what not and obviously I'm not doing crazy wheeling so it would be important to me. My end product may not be everyones taste, but its mine not yours!

Open to suggestions... actually, I want the expert opinions. And anything can change. We all know that!

Game plan as of 12/15/2015

BODY 1:

  • Finish non repro pieces of A pillars, flanges, and firewall

  • Windshield header set

  • New cowl pieces

  • New bedsides

  • New floor

  • New wheel wells

  • New rad support

  • Body on rotisserie

  • Clean up underside

  • Send body out for blast and epoxy primer
*Note: Completing above will allow me to pull the body from the frame. Why rad support then?? Well…my good friend owns restoration shop in north Jersey. I want to send the frame out to get blasted and powder coated. He suggested I send the rad support out with the frame to get powder coated so it’s finished and protected. This way when I get to mocking up new doors, fenders, and outer rockers when I align everything I don’t have to touch the rad support again. Just his suggestion and I like it.

FRAME, DRIVETRAIN, AND SUSPENSION:

  • DIY4X Engine Cross member
  • Send out frame and rad support for blast and powder coat.

  • Shackle flips and 4 inch front. (want level, not saggy butt)

  • Axels??? Reliable but not crazy. Handle 33-35’s and 525HP 6 or 8 LUG?

    ANY SUGGESTIONS??

  • LS376 525 HP and 4L70E out of Chevy performance

  • Can I still use my 205 with the above set up?

  • New harness and LS controllers

  • Aluminum fuel tank custom set up

  • Leave tiny wheels and tires for rollin around purposes

BODY 2:

  • Fenders

  • Inner Fenders

  • Doors

  • Outer Rockers

  • Tailgate

  • Get lines all set

  • Block sand

  • Paint(black metallic)

  • 4 Point roll bar

FINISHING TOUCHES AND GUTS:

  • Door guts

  • Windshield

  • Vintage air

  • Gauges (not stock)

  • Headlight assemblies

  • Grill

  • Bumpers

  • Chrome wheels…like MT classic 2’s and BFG Mud terrains or something
INTERIOR:

  • Bed liner throughout cab

  • Marine Upholstery
They have a lot of cool materials for getting wet. Obviously I’m not submerging this but I figured why not have something that can handle a little moisture. They have this floor coating that looks like mesh but is completely solid and sound deadening. Goes in like carpeting. I have a hot rod upholstery guy that does boat upholstery too. Then coat all metal parts for seats. Leather looking breathable marine vinyl. Rear interior panels in same material as seats. Dash pad again, same material.

  • Bikini top

  • Custom top that I can cover if rain pops up so I’m not super soaked.
I don’t like the only top they make for the 1st gen. So I’ll have a custom one. NO PLANS OF A HARD TOP!

Thanks Guys!
