'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

your truck is totally slicked out man, i checked it out a few times and you did a great job with all the new everything. pictures dont to this truck justice really IMO.

Update 3/28/08

Had some time to work on the truck today and started to tackle the body lift. All of the blocks are out. Just need to shim it to get the door lines right.

One of 12 high quality body lift "pucks" (high quality used very loosely here)

The current chaos. Unfortunately you can't see all of the front interior that is piled up behind me.

UPDATE 4/21/08
Finally got some time to work on the truck again. I started tackling the body shims to get the door gaps right after pulling out the body lift. I finally figured out that I really need to tear down the front clip and start with the door alignment. The body line that runs the length of the body, about 1/4 up, didn't line up between the rear quarter, the door, and the fender.

So, I tore it down to here:

Messed with the door alignment on the passenger side for a while and ended up with here. You can really see how far the alignment was off based on the graphics. Oh well, it'll get repainted eventually.

With the shimming I had already done, I ended up with a nice gap at the windshield frame:

Here's the front fender test fitted. I need to oval out some of the mount holes to close up the gap to the door and bring it down just a little more.

I put the striker plate back on and miraculously got it lined up the first time. The door closes beautifully and doesn't rub anywhere. Driver's side is next...when I get some time. This was my all out effort before the baby boy shows up this week. Overall, I'm happy with the progress.

the force is strong with you. I need you to stop by and do mine next :D

looks good, i hope mine goes as ez.

Do you have any front on or rear shots of the blazer, showing how much your tires stick out? I am gonna be getting some 38/15.5/18 toyos and was wondering how much they will stick out.

Believe it or not, I don't with the new tires yet. Sorry.

Keep in mind that how far they stick out is not only dependent on the width of the tire, but also the backspacing/offset of the rim you have them on and the width of your axles :wink1:

i realize all that. I was talking about your 39.5s you had on there. What was the backspacing on those rims? and do you have any of those pics?

May I ask how much you paid for your truck/starting point?

Update 05/09/08:
Baby boy (Connor) was born 2 weeks ago and the dust has finally settled a bit around the house. So...I went to the shop and spent the afternoon shimming the body and aligning panels. I had previously "finished" the passenger side, but decided to tweak it a bit. Got to a point where I was happy and then tackled the driver side. Needless to say, it did not go as smooth as the passenger side. But, it's done.

All that remains for aligning body parts is the wiper cowl and the hood.

Here's the gaps I ended up with on the driver's side.

Not very exciting, I know. But after all the tweaking, I'm happy with how it's come out, except for the graphics being all misaligned now. But personally, I'd rather have the body lines correct, and deal with graphics later.

UPDATE 5/24/08 - I spent a lot of time this week (when the baby was napping) at the shop doing final adjustments on the fenders and getting everything back together for the holiday weekend.

I fabbed up some backing plates for the seats because the previous owner had stripped almost all of them, had relocated some of the mounts, was just using fender washers as supports on the body, AND had run a few bolts all the way thru the torsion boxes :eek1:

After getting everything together, I had a tuneup done on the engine. We built some new MSD plug wires because the headers had melted thru the sheath on 3 of the wires...which explains why the engine ran like cr*p. Then it was off to the muffler shop to get some new tailpipes bent. The "originals" had to be cut off when the shackle flip was installed. The tips now dump out at the rear corners.

After all was said and done, I finally got to drive it. I still need to do some tweaks on the hood and grill alignment (we left it off for the tune up...so it was just bolted on when done).

Some time next weekend I'll work on getting the F*rd front shock towers and my Bilstein front shocks installed. The truck drives totally different from when I first got it. Smooooooooth.

Very nice rig. Did you just get another factory crossmember/support and modify it to make a skidplate or guard for the t-case? Looks good.
Hoby

I never even caught that. It was something the PO built.

That is a double crossmember, I have the same thing under my 72 :D. I belive that the K5s that came with a factory gas tank skid also had this dual x-member/skid as part of the package.
