'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

Got the call today that the exhaust is done. But now that the exhaust is done, you can actually hear the motor.

My buddy called me and said that two of the driver's side valves are making noise. Minimal info at the moment. It was the end of the day and I was on my way to coach a soccer game. Valve covers will come off tomorrow to see what the deal is :angry1:

He said the two valves were "hammering". I assume that's more than a rattle.

Stay calm brother.... I know your last BBC was a heartbreaking nightmare, but you've paid your dues now. :D.

Broken rocker stud, worst case. ARPs would solve that.... BTDT. :waytogo:

probably just need a snug....

Good call Paul. When they pulled the driver side cover, it was just one pushrod that needed to be snugged <whew>. Thanks for talking me down guys.

On a side note, my O2 sensor is also on the driver side, which explains why I couldn't get a tune dialed in. They're still working on the tune. At the moment, they're unhappy with the infamous COMM error that it's throwing and are chasing it down. I'll get out there on Monday (took the day off) to see where it's at.

happy dance... :woot:

man I love this rig...... want pics of the kids in it for a cruise... :waytogo:

UPDATE 6/8/15 - Back in the garage. Drove the truck back home today. With the exhaust done and the one valve corrected, it's driving way smoother. The Magnaflows are nice and mellow.

Talked to FAST and they said I need to send them the ECU and handheld for testing. Those will come out in the next day or two. While the computer is off getting checked, I'll get the rest of the body panels back on and tend to the couple of remaining leaks.

Getting closer....

saweet!

the BBC gods are watching over that engine!

So...... Kids are with me for dinner tonight and they see the truck in the garage again. Excitement ensues. I figure before I start pulling out the ECM, I should start it up for them. Turn it over, rev it a few times and shut it down. Then I get, "Dad, shouldn't it be louder?" from my daughter. I was stunned, disappointed (in my muffler choice) and proud of my little hotrodder at the same time. The Force is strong with her.

So it is really quiet, or was she being ironic?

Maybe if you posted videos once in a while instead of words we could understand you better. :D

Let me put it this way Greg, she liked the rumble of open headers. The new exhaust is quiet at idle, but barks when you get on it. Definitely not Flowmaster rumble though, but didn't drone on the highway either. I'm not completely sold on the Magnaflows, I guess.

I figured someone would call me out for lack of audio / video. I'll see if I can get some tonight since I didn't feel like pulling the ECM last night.

It should get a little louder, I like the magnaflows for that reason. Very cool. Ya dun good.

Yeah....definitely get some video if you can. I have always used Flowmasters as my de-facto muffler on the K5.... not because I loved it, but because they seemed to be built tough and were easy to find online.

I'd like to try the Magnaflows for a change of pace, but if they make the BBC sound "weird" then maybe I won't... :dunno:

I guess I could just weld on some V-band style flanges and then I could easily swap between mufflers based on my mood, phase of the moon, etc. :D

Could always add some upstream electric cut outs. That way it's loud for the kids but quiet on the highway.

AJ, if you need it to be louder for her, just press the skinny pedal a bit more. :)

My kids cover their ears when they are nearby the truck(when it's running). I also still set off a decent number of car alarms in the parking lot at work. I wonder if dual magnaflows are quieter than a single?

It's growing on me. It's popping when coming off the gas because the tune's not dialed in. Ran it up to 5500 twice in the vid.

Kinda liking Greg's idea...something slightly rowdier for cruising in town and maybe the Magnaflows for highway driving.
