'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

UPDATE 12/24/16 - Catching up. Lots of progress since the last update. Pics tell the story.

Last major purchase for this part of the build. The TCI transmission controller showed up. I went with the TCI controller because it can pull RPM and TPS off the FAST ECU through the CAN link.

Got shafted. Both driveshafts were modified due to the new length of the drivetrain. The short one is the rear shaft.

Wiring in the TCU. At the time, this did not feel like progress. I'm gonna need to adapt some new mounts for that seat.

Relocated the engine harness for the EFI while I was in there. It's way less obvious since it's camouflaged behind the air cleaner now. I made a new panel without the 2" hole, but didn't get a pic.

Funny looking gloves in that glovebox. Both computers wired in and mounted in the glovebox.

Powered up the electrical to check for issues.

Might as well do a pedal upgrade while I'm in there

Added a beefy new starter. The old one was tired and was the last piece of engine hardware left from the PO.

More to come REALLY soon...

Crap! After seeing this post I can see clearly I have to start saving up as there is more money needed to throw at my rig(I did not realize you could upgrade pedals?). On a side note I can clearly remember that stage in my build where there were wires hanging everywhere. Very nice.

Nicely done my friend, your cookies will be delivered shortly. :deal:

Not if you use the post office, they will be lost forever! :doah:

Oh man. Dammit. For the record, anyone needing a 700r4/208 tall adapter need only search the USPS Dead Letter Office.

TH400 tall adapter....or is it? Look REALLY close.

CNC milled the diameter and height of the lip on the tranny side. BOOM. Tall 4L80 adapter.

Just did the same thing to mine this weekend. What did you end up milling the diameter to? Mine was 4.800. What transfer case are you going to run? NP205?

I don't know what it was machined to :doah:I dropped the adapter and the trans off at the machine shop. Picked it up a week later and it all fit :waytogo:. I do know that he had to mill the diameter and depth.

I'm running a 241.

When you get some good compression and a decent cam in a big block its crazy how strong the pulses coming out of the exhaust are at idle isn't it. Many times you can feel them several feet away even with dual 3" exhaust, let alone a small exhaust.

Nice job with the install AJ, it looks clean.

3/19/17 - Catching up, again. Seems like I've been doing lots of little stuff, but not taking time to post it. So here goes...

Made two attempts to seal the cylinder head studs with Right Stuff. But, they kept leaking coolant into the oil from inside the valve cover. Had a couple leaking outside as well. After doing a lot of googling, I decided that studs weren't going to do it for me. Rather than tear the top end off, I began to replace them with ARP head bolts, one at a time. Drained the coolant and scrubbed each hole with brake clean and an engine brush to get any residual Right Stuff out. This was a GIANT PAIN IN THE A$$. Anyway, here's a pic while it was in progress...

Then it was time to address the pinion angle. With the 4L80 being longer than the 700R4, my pinion angle was about 2* up, instead of 1* down. I procrastinated on this one because of the mess involved in cutting perches off. I even ponied up for a digital angle finder. After lots of hammering and adjusting, I ended up here:

Sent the transfer case shifter off the get chromed. Came out REALLY nice. Although the pic makes it look like they plated it in gold.

Made a bezel for the transmission cover so that I wouldn't keep shooting self tapping screws through the cover. Threaded the holes.

Last piece for this update is an aluminum bezel to better finish off the hacked up dash from the PO putting in a CD player.

New carpet should show up tomorrow and the interior should start coming back together.

Almost forgot... I swapped out the 1 ton booster in favor of a 9" dual diaphragm booster. The 1 ton was too close driver side valve coves and made it a pain to remove it. Here you can see the difference in the two.... one ton on left, 9" on the right.

Looking good man. The bezel is a good idea. Wish I would have done the same.

AJ,

You are making me nervous with all of this leaking head bolt / head stud talk....

:yikes:

Bolts are holding. I have about 6 heat cycles on them now with no leaks. The studs were leaking at the 2nd heat cycle (at most)
