'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

Yep, needs to be ported

Marked. Small inconsistency in the casting for the #7 port. Cleaned it up as much as I could

Ported and polished the ports. Felt like I was taking out a ton of material. But, I guess it's all relative

It's still sitting on a table. Had to order a new set of intake bolts. The Brodix casting is thicker than the Edelbrock all the way around.

I got the same electric grinder. I was going to remind you to wear good goggles with that thing due to the little deathly sharp splinters it throws off that get in the eye.

That's no joke Brian. There were shavings 4 feet from the table. I wore my glasses. But I probably should have worn goggles.

Looks good AJ. Are you starting it back up with the EZ EFI or a new ECU?

I had planned on starting it back up with the EZ ECU, but it may make more sense to just order the Sportsman now.

Did it make it back in to the engine bay?

It did this morning.... I got up early in an attempt to beat the heat

Yet another catch up thread. Lots of small stuff adding up and figured it was time to put something up.

Finished moving the wiring from the firewall. Already had the 4L80 wiring running thru here, figured I might as well use it for the rest. The separate wires run to the console.

Replaced the Weiand waterpump that was on the original PO purple BBC with an Edelbrock

For grins, decided to put on a Moroso pan

Did some homework on the fuel pump. The Walbro 255lph was going to be borderline enough, so dropped in an Aeromotive 340lph

Got the new ECU mounted in the glovebox

How it sits for now.

Need to tuck in the EFI harness and run the vacuum hoses and plug wires. Getting closer to startup.

I do need to decide if I'm gonna put the big 1-ton booster (needs fresh paint) back on or keep the 9inch.

Bringing this pic back up...

First startup with the new ECM....no video...sorry guys. Once the engine got up to about 195*, I started hearing what sounded like rocks and pinging inside the timing cover.

Summit mentions that it'll work with "most" timing sets. Well, I found one that it doesn't. According to the fine print on the Cloyes website, their QuickButton timing cover isn't designed to work with their own Quick Adjust True timing set....which of course I'm running. Minimal damage to the cover. Mind you this is cover #2 that the timing chain chewed on.

EDIT: I have the Comp Cams adjustable timing set. Same outcome.

Hopefully you were able to get that cover off without removing the motor. Ugh, that’s a pain.

I think worst case would have been to pull the radiator. But yes, thankfully, I was able to pull the balancer without having to take the engine out.

It's really all you can do...

If you correct them, you just end up looking like an arrogant douche. If you let it slide, they might eventually see the huge "CHEVROLET" stamped across the rear tailgate and realize on their own that they made a mistake!!!

:haha:

Jimmy's get even less respect

The good news... Made enough progress on the small stuff that the rig saw daylight for the first time in a year and a half. Got the hood back on and washed off the garage dust. It was 80* and clear here... couldn't have been nicer.

Took it for a cruise around the neighborhood and dropped some cash filling the tank.

On the EFI front, idle in park and idle in gear are dialed in with < 5% O2 correction at 14.1 AFR. and fuel rate is at 6-8lbs/hour. I can actually stand in the garage with it running and not have to go outside with my eyes burning. For perspective on the cam and lack of vacuum, at idle the MAP sensor thinks the engine is under ~60% load.

The bad news.... in my 30-ish minute cruise, I got a case of death wobble 4 times when the passenger side front took a bump / dip in the road. Y'all might remember that I took the bottom leaf out of each of the spring packs to soften the ride up a bit. Probably not doing me any favors. But, my guess is ball joints. Driver's side has never been replaced. Picked up a new set for both sides. Next weekend's project.
