'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

Windshield time. Put about 20 miles on it yesterday. In general it’s running really nice.

Tune still needs some work for cruising and the cam button is making some noise. And my steering wheel is crooked.

As for the drive itself... Plenty of dips and bumps in the road and NO death wobble. Between the new ball joints, retorquing the TREs and DLEs, and the new tires, it’s appears to be ok.

Was asked to bring it to Carfest again, here in San Antonio. It’s spending a few nights here.

DEAL OF THE DAY!

Decided that it was time for an upgrade from the old halogens. Figured I should do LED, but man, the cost. Started searching the interwebs and ran across the old Stylin Trucks website. Basic catalog stuff. They're being acquired, or have been, by JC Whitney. That says enough.

Anyway. They had JW Speaker 7" round 8700 J2s for $94. WHAT THE WHAT?! All I can figure is someone messed up on their website. Best I found anywhere else was $400 at our very own OK 4WD (@swettysblazer). I called and checked with the customer service and, sure enough, $94 for a set of black ones (didn't want carbon fiber anyway). Figured it was worth the gamble and placed the order.

These showed up today. Mind you the only things in the box were the two headlights and a sticker. I assume that's all that's supposed to be in there. I do need to order a couple of H13 -> H4 adapters.

I’m scared about how this will look..... but for $94 it was a risk worth taking.

Pretty sure they're gonna look a little bug-eyed. But from what I can tell, they won't stick out from the bucket like the Truck-lites or Nighthawks.

There is a whole 4 year thread on tacomaworld about headlight upgrades. Half of it is in upgrading the wiring so you get full power to the lights but the rest focuses on the light pattern of many of the aftermarket lights and placing the light where it should be to benefit you and not blind oncoming drivers which is a problem with many of the aftermarket lights. With that said, for less than $100 I'd give them a shot. Curious to see the outcome. For reference here is the headlight thread, the OP knows what he is talking about, the wiring and part number stuff is pretty Tacoma specific but some really good information and adaptable to other applications.

@dbcorvairracer i have had my j.w. speakers for over 1.5 years now i think . no one flashes me and the cut off is perfect and lots more side light . these guys build a super product . i just wish i could find his price deal like he just did . . . i would buy more no questions asked .

we here have also talked about and done writeup's on relay mod for the headlights even if no upgrade bulbs installed . it sure does work much better .

Got the new eyeballs in the grill. Took a lot of trimming on the headlight bucket to clear the cooling fins. This was the rough cut. Taking a little off at a time to just clear. The 2nd one went a lot faster.

They got cleaned up and shot with a fresh coat of paint before install.

A little bug eyed like I figured they would be, but not bad really. They do sit flush in the grill like the H4s did.

Do you have an angle shot? They blend better than I thought they would.

I had to check, but JC Whitney must have sold out of them. Maybe they were clearing inventory.

I checked again a couple of days after they shipped and the price was back to $600-sumthin. :dunno:

The summer so far....

Got the headlights aligned. Not a bad pattern and big difference at night.

Decided to put the truck into a show early June. Spent a Friday getting it cleaned up with the dog, until....

I went to jump up onto the tailgate and missed with the left foot. Drove all of my weight in the air into the top of the tailgate. Those paying any attention to this build will remember that I did the same thing, in nearly the exact same spot, to the other shin. I'll have matching scars.

Lots of cool cars at the show.

I took 2nd on the 60-79 class. The guy that took first in the class won overall best in show with a super clean C10. No pics. Sorry.

Found the source of the squealing noise under the hood. Alternator bearings were starting to wear. All I can figure is too much tension on the belt. Put in a new Powermaster CS130 140amp.

Still working on the tune. Learning as I go. Learned that my MAP curves don't have to be linear and can start anywhere. Which is good. Because with as little vacuum as I get, there's nothing below 40MAP needed. Should let me dial it in better. But, I also found I needed to put more fuel pressure in. Was running about 38lbs at idle. Upped it to 43lbs and found the pressure side of the fuel line was leaking at the pickup. Dropped the tank and resealed the NPT fitting and snugged it all back up.

Hopefully smokey burnouts coming "relatively" soon. :burnout:

Sweet on the truck, bummer on the stitches.

It's amazing the headlights make those blue plus marks on the fence.

And who the heck stitched that up, was it some kid with a fish hook?

Can you modify the fuel and timing charts on that setup? If so make them close down by idle and low-mid RPM and spread them out a little in the upper RPM to get a better curve.
