'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

Wow so the K5 is getting a custom chassis but what are you doing with the C10?

I’m not 100% set on the path for the C10 yet. It’ll sit for a year while we “finish” the K5. Not enough room to build two at the same time. Not unless I kick the wife’s car out of the garage.

AJ, I'm in, sounds like an awesome build, here I am playing with sheetmetal, and your building frames

I'm envious of your talents

Like the roll bar, and the C10, any more pics of it, any thoughts on which way the C10 is headed

I have a lot of sheetmetal work to learn.

Lots of time to plan out the C10 while I'm finishing the K5.

Starting with a new frame with a better design is huge step in the right direction. My Dad has a 57 Chevy on a Art Morrison chassis, they do nice work.

12/9/22 - Renders!

Spent some time with Chad Canning at RenderedRides (@renderedrides on Instagram) to get the ideas in my head onto "paper". Here's where the K5 is going:

12/28/22 - Merry Christmas to me - Setting up shop

Still accumulating parts and tools... and a 24 pack of blue sharpies. Got the supplies needed to get the Miller 211 I bought last year up and running. I scored a welding cart on sale at Jegs. Also made a call to Texas Metal Works for one of their 30x48 welding tables. Great quality, really solid, and relatively well priced. Time to start making ugly welds and a tuition pile.

1/3/21 - Crossover Pipe and Tailgate Latches

One of the last things I needed to before engine tuning was to build a crossover pipe. It's temporary as it'll all get redone with the new chassis. Got the welder settings dialed in for exhaust tubing and did a bunch of practicing on spare tubing I had laying around. I found that was super paranoid about burn thru and caught myself going too fast a few times. I also wasn't physically moving enough to keep the spark angle in the root and travel angle clean. I could totally feel when the weld was clean and when it wasn't. Technique will get better with more practice.

Ended up with this. Seems like a lot of band clamps here. :rotfl:

With that done, I got to work on the tailgate latches from TRE5 Customs. They're bearclaw latches much like the Trique Manufacturing Altman Easy Latches for the doors (those are coming next). They clean up the latching mechanism on the tailgate hugely.

After removing the factory latch, the opening in the tailgate has to be opened up for the new latch. TRE5 provides templates, but the tailgate hole had to opened up more than the template to accommodate the spring for the latch mechanism. LS Fabrication noted that in their install video, too

Striker plate was pretty straightforward. I do like that it uses cables instead of the bars. Lots of adjustment to get it dialed in, but this was expected.

Last thing here was to shorten the latch rods by about 1/2" each. The install videos I found don't mention this, but the handle had a ton of slop. I went ahead an replaced the original tailgate handle while I was at it.

And here's what you get when you're finished.....

oh, that latches nice! I love my door altman door latches. I guess this needs to be on the list.

I got my Trique latches the other day.

If you haven't bought them yet, Classic Industries carries them now. With a promo code I was able to get them cheaper than what Trique sells them for direct. They are labeled as "Altman" style on the site, but the pictures and price is exactly the same as Triques website. Figured they were the same and when they showed up they were in a Trique box.

I have a set on hand and already started on the driver’s side door. I’m welding mine in and have to fix a few spots where I burned thru the door sheet metal.
