Did you say what that sucker weighs, I can`t remember?

About the same as the fully-built portal boxes.....

"A metric sh1t-ton" :haha:

It's heavy.

Really.

Interesting coincidence. I was just studying up on 4-corner race scales (again) to decide if I should finally pull the trigger on a setup. (if I do that I can give you a REAL weight)

Looking at Intercomp, Longacre, MB Racing (Mittler Bros), and Rebco... can't really decide what to do yet. Most are 1500Lb pads which limits me to 6000Lb maximum capacity. There are a few companies offering a 1750Lb pad set for a total of 7000Lbs, but the price just about doubles on the setups. (From just over $1000 to about $2000). I'm just not sure I can justify spending THAT much extra for the final 1000 Lbs I "might" need when the truck is fully built.

Most of what I need scales for is the "in process" part of this build where the truck is FAR less than 6000Lbs anyway.. so that's where I'm leaning now.

Intercomp seems to be the internet favorite for quality and features. It can even do a "Center of Gravity" function (data which would be incredibly useful to have!) :woot:

Anyway.... just trying to plot a course for the next few months of shop time and the most important things to be spending money on in the short-term.

ps. Welcome to Page 31.

Yeah it looks heavy...don`t drop it on your toe! :eek1: You must have arms like Goliath. Or you will by the time your done. :haha:

Could you borrow or rent scales? But you would probably need to have them to long for that to work, plus I don`t imagine just anyone has them.

I have a philosophy about tools....

"Never a borrower nor a lender be"

I certainly DON'T like the idea of ever lending out my tools, and borrowing from someone else is equally unsavory.

If a tool is important enough for me to need it, I'll find the money to buy it somehow. Race scales are a luxury item, but it's the kind of thing that will probably come in handy more often than I'd expect.

It's also the kind of thing that makes you "real popular" with other car/truck guys once they know you've got them. Kind of like the guy who installs a chassis dyno in his personal workshop! :D

Why would you need to know the weight over each tire? I can understand for race applications but none of that would apply to your truck :dunno:

I'd start out with weights for a lot of the individual pieces (axles, tires, suspension links, etc)

That will allow me to know the sprung mass vs unsprung mass of the vehicle. Pretty useful when trying to set up the correct pressure in the struts... and I'm sure ORI will be able to give me MUCH better advice on tuning if I can provide them with accurate weights.

Front/Rear and Side/Side weights are going to be useful as I continue the build as well. I've still got some flexibility in placing weight for things like batteries, so if I see that the balance is offset to one side I can move at least SOME of the weight around to compensate.

Knowing CG accurately will help confirm all the suspension settings at the very end. An awful lot of the formulas in the calculator use vehicle CG to establish their values.... so if I can get an accurate number, the calcs will be accurate as well.

Stuff like that.....

Plus weighing everything is totally neurotic and obsessive. Having my own set of 4-corner scales will allow me to indulge all of my worst behaviors. :waytogo:

I hear you on the tools... I'm not a big fan of borrowing.
And lending can go great or very bad! :doah:

I like that you analyze every little detail, not positive what you do but you got to be a engineer!!?? :D

Why would you need more than one scale? You should be able to get cg from measuring the weight at each corner individually, at least the xy coordinates. Z would be a little extra challenge.

I put more value on my time than that, I suppose... :dunno:

There's only 3-1/2 years until Moab 2018. I need to make real forward progress, and I really can't spend lots of time screwing around making tools or hobbling myself using 1 scale when what I really need is 4.

I need to pick up the pace here.... Time is running out. :D

My old room mate had the Longacre ones for his IMCA Modified. The dirt track guys build wooden platforms the same size as the scales. Then they jack the car up, set it on the platforms, and roll it onto the as opposed to setting it down onto the scales.

I've heard about that.... Supposedly gives you a more "natural" reading since the suspension is completely settled-out with no binding of the links or bushings.

I've seen the really high-end guys build the scales flush into a drive on style lift for the same effect (at an even higher price)... :)

I'm glad to see you back at it Greg.:waytogo:

Did you completely give up on the idea of the adjustable monoloth?

Yeah, pretty much gave up on it.

Maybe someday I'll get back to a clean-sheet design but it was just wasting too much time and effort.

Says Greg in Jan 2008 !!

...

If the money holds out...... this thing might be running under it's own power some time this summer???? :dunno:

Be careful throwing around completion dates :D

Glad you are back at it again. Some of us live vicariously through this build. I actually don't want it to ever end.
