HA!

When you only check in every 4 years or so, it really looks like I am moving fast. :haha:

I think you are the only person on CK5 who thinks the forward progress is fast enough!

2015.04.27 - UPDATE! - !!! A PODIUM FINISH FOR M.P.S. !!!

It was a great weekend.

NorCal69 (Mike) had a brilliant idea.... he created a friendly FB competition for a few of the CK5ers to allow for a lot of trash-talking, and to fire up everyone's motivation to get out into the garage this weekend. He called it "Man Points Sunday" (M.P.S.).

Basically, it's an event where you build and post photos and points are awarded based on Mike's completely biased and random opinions about what you are doing. It's hard to get points early in the day, but as the Bud Light starts flowing into his liver... racking up a high score gets easier. :haha:

In any case, the gauntlet was thrown down on Saturday night.... so a bunch of us knew that we'd need to be 100% ready when Sunday morning rolled around.... No points are awarded until 8AM Pacific time, so I just did some prepping of the workspace to maximize my productivity.

Start of the day:

IMG_4176.jpg

Those rear frame sections have been hanging loosely in the original frame openings for a long time. What they needed was a transitional set of 1/8" thick shims to take up the slack and ensure that I didn't create a huge vertical stress riser where the two sections overlapped.

I cut some fishplates with the requisite curves and layed them at each corner of the new frame section. This gave me a nice gap between each piece to lay in a nice hot weld.

IMG_4187.jpg

With both frame sections completed, it was time to prep the original frame ends for the merge. I drilled 12 holes per framerail (1/2" diameter) with my UniBit and carefully cleaned the burrs and metal for welding.

IMG_4198.jpg

The fit was just what you'd hope for when grafting two frame sections together. It was tight enough that they'd go together... but not without a little bit of "persuasion".... A come-a-long added the perfect amount of extra incentive and saved me from doing 1000 hammer strikes on the frame end to move it along. :D

IMG_4202.jpg

Everything was lined up nicely, and it was time to burn it all together permanently. I checked (and double checked) my levels one final time....then pulled the trigger and puddled up those 24 holes!

IMG_4215.jpg

It was good to finally have the frame back in one piece. All that was left to do was to reintroduce the axle and links to the rear of the truck. They have been apart since before Christmas (IIRC)....

IMG_4220.jpg

And finally THE BIG PAYOFF!!!!

IMG_4223.jpg

In this final shot, you can really see all the extra clearance around the upper link mount bracket. This was the area of the stock frame where I was constantly hitting during my cycling tests. I was notching and notching and moving the strut mount further inboard to get the clearances I needed... but it was just never going to work until the rear frame was massively reworked.

The effort was well worth it. The visual impact of all of that new clearance is great.... and getting the silver medal in the MPS competition was just some fun icing on the cake! :haha:

Man...that's way cooler than I could see yesterday. That is so much more worthy than my puny burnout. Nicely done.

That is so not true. I went through a lot of effort with big white boards, computer programs and countless other "things" to keep the points and competition fair. :deal::waytogo:

The way you make it sound, is, I put a trash can out in my driveway and launched empty beer cans into it from the garage. If I made it, you ended up with points. If I missed, you were somehow found guilty of some random act, and a deduction of points would follow. :dunno:

Now, does that sound like something I would condone?

Anyways, it was a great day of some super Gladiator Fabrication. Congrats on the silver. It was well earned due to some badass work.

Congrats! :waytogo:

And here I didn't think you cared about MPS™.:haha:

First gens finishing #1 and #2. :thumb: At least I got some points this go round.

Mike's completely biased

I just don't see what you guys might be implying. :wink1:

Nice job on the multitasking, Jesse. Someday, you might get closer to the podium, but remember, you started at a negative 15 due to being found guilty of derailment. It's tough to come out of the hole so easy. :smirk:

Do not argue with the supreme councils decision on giving you the gold. :eek1:

A 1st gen, after a 5 year build, doing burn outs on the second MPS™ ever. C'mon, man.... :saweet::saweet:

Lets just say that you hit the nail on the head with that pic and vid....

or some might say...... your can made it all the way to the trash can. :pimp::haha:

Hmmm.... What an amazingly detailed, and allegedly fictional explanation of the MPS scoring process.

Pure gold. :D

2015.05.04 - UPDATE! - SHOCKING-LY SMALL PROGRESS....!!!

Some days it's just tough to get into "the zone" and knock out some serious fabrication. All you can do is just knuckle-down and fight through it and take whatever progress you can get.

Such was the case yesterday.

After getting the rear back-half frame welded in place, I re-installed the rear axle and all the links , portal housings and wheels/tires....and spent a little time confirming that everything was still level, and plumb and ready for the rear ORI installation.

What makes it tricky is the sloped concrete floor, and the fact that I want a 1* forward rake on the body (as measured at the bedside) for the proper stance of the truck. So my first steps were to get the bedside(s) at the correct angle, and then put some blocking under the rear tires to account for the sloping floor. By putting some threaded rod into the CTIS air holes (center of the wheel hub) I was able to drop my multi-part digital level across them and measure my wheel heights (front-to-rear) to insure that they were at a perfect 0.0* on the readout.

I dropped the front end onto it's bumpstops so that I don't have to worry about any shifting of the struts and accidental changing of ride height.

IMG_4259.jpg

The next challenge is to account for the fact that the rear ORIs are 2" longer than the fronts (16" vs 14"). I decided to throw that extra travel equally at both the bump and droop side of the equation so the final setup would look like this:

IMG_4260.jpg

For the shop work, that means that the rear tires actually need to sit an additional 1" HIGHER than the fronts if I want to build everything at full-bump.... so I put some additional blocking under each tire to add the establish the perfect axle position before I started welding up any strut mounts.

IMG_4309.jpg

Knowing that I'm going to mount the strut behind the axle now... I can drop the entire thing a lot lower than my previous attempts, but with the articulation of the axle I still need to keep the upper mount pretty steeply angled inward to avoid contact with the inside tire sidewall. There's really NO chance to fit the stock width seat into that equation, so I temporarily set it in there just to mark how much narrower I think it will end up being.

IMG_4301.jpg

The seat is originally about 48" wide, but realistically it's going to end up at around 30" wide to allow the installation of all the upper strut mount tubing. The main structural components are going to drop straight down to the top of my new frame sections, which will be a lot stronger than trying to support the weight of the truck from the current horizontal cage tubes. :waytogo:

I started doing some templating of the lower mount first (using the fully-compressed ORI) to get a feel for how the packaging will go.

IMG_4314.jpg

Since I was trying to build a set of brackets onto a trussed housing, the left and right side plates were totally different. I'm also trying to run the mounting bolt in the front-to-back configuration which makes the bracket a bit more complicated since I need wrench access to both sides of the bolt. To add a bit more "fun" the portal housings have about 8 perimeter bolts that I can't block-off with my new shock mount, or I'll never get the portals on or off ever again.....

IMG_4320.jpg

In retrospect, I guess my progress wasn't actually TOO bad considering all of the tedious considerations that were involved. And like so many of the prototypes on this truck, the lower mount gets built 2 times.... so I'm reworking my paper templates constantly to insure that the driver's side can be built about 100x faster once I get a design figured out that works well....

Looks like decent progress. I wonder if 2 bucket seats would be easier to package back there than a single 30" bench?

Its really gotta be that narrow? I bet my buckets alone are 20" wide. Idk how you would even fit 2 people in 30". Unless you are just going for a single seat.

Two buckets would be a weird look I think... I was just going to cut down the factory bench, sleeve and reweld the tubular framework and then reupholster it in some kind of period-correct houndstooth & leather. :D

It's too early to tell how narrow it will be, but honestly anything smaller than the factory 48" is going to be miserable for two people anyway. Ultimately, the only person who will probably ever ride back there is Charlie..... my wife doesn't have any interest in 4-wheeling so the passenger seat will almost always be empty. Three seats is still 1 too many!!! :haha:

I like the shortened bench. Even if not used, it will still look "right".

Knock your wife up again. Boom another wheeling buddy, you just have to wait a few years.

Uhm.....yeah.

I already served my time in "Baby Jail" once.... got paroled and have been on "good behavior" ever since. There's no way I'm going back to THAT place again... :haha:

BlazerBash 2018 will be here fast enough as it is.

Famous last words. My girls are 5 1/2 years apart...neither was a 'surprise'. :doah:
