72 K5 - IGOR's build thread - 6/12/2017- Update!

2013: Monday, 11/25 (my birthday) I took advantage of a light work week and spent my lunch (two) hour at the county office – great fun place

– it’s like Disney Land without the rides or the fun.

The county put a new computer system in during September. I know this because several county employees have complained their jobs are harder now. (insert tiny violin here)

Before I can even fart in the county office, I must get permission from the compliance people. D was on vacation that day, so I waited patiently for 20 minutes for his coworker to review my file, then approve what I wanted to do.

As I have a VIOLATION the compliance people must be consulted on any changes to any permits before I can talk with any other county folks. D’s coworker was cool, and I was able to move forward.

As much as I want to continue watching the bureaucracy implode on the framing/electrical situation, I thought it best to open an electrical permit and also update the gutter plumbing permit to include the bathroom (that is now already installed – don’t tell the county)

– oh and also get a permit for the electrical service upgrade. Lady at the county permit desk wanted to charge me for three electrical services. One for the meter upgrade, one for the panel upgrade, and one for the shop panel.

I very politely asked if the county had any black Friday specials (buy 2 get 1 free maybe?) and if she would ask an electrical inspector for clarification on the correct charges – she did, pleasantly, and I was only
forced to pay $320 for the electrical permit vs. $480!!

Tuesday, 11/26, I passed three inspections

– Holy %$&#*$ Plumbing ground work, water feed, and sewer drain.

I couldn’t believe it either. I have a few notes from the inspector I need to address, but I’m good to go to bury the trench – oh but not before I repair the French drain I hit while trenching for the sewer and water line.

Oh and drainage guy suggested that I connect the footing drain on the south wall to the French drain I hit – so it flows a bit better…

I also got an email from D Tuesday morning asking for progress update – dang but did he got off easy!!
So that about sums up progress to this point.

Oh yeah and I got gutters at some point – those went on so cleanly and simply that I almost didn’t notice it.

Good to see you've overcome all the bureaucracy......where I live it's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

When I built my barn, I called the county:

"hello I want to build a barn"

"is it for agricultural purposes?"

"yes, I will keep my tractor and equipment in it"

"OK then, you don't need a permit, just keep it 5 feet from the property line"

"thank you"....hang up......commence barn building.

I love it - :D

I wish it were that easy in liberal Oregon! :dunno:

All of these updates from the future are confusing....... :dunno:

November 25 is like a week and a half from now.

Is there a wormhole in your new workshop?

Well then it may not do me any good anyhow. Im buying a house in the next month or two and wanted to see some of the ins and outs of getting approval to build a shop. I'll have to wait and see which place i get. But im likely to be buying in multnomah county.

My advice is to find one complete with a shop if at all possible - or hire a contractor that is used to working on such things every day.

Also - part of my "fun" with the county was due to completing the site work and removing dirt from building site prior to getting a permit - a neighbor turns me in and voila - violation.

I also could have saved lots of grief if I had gotten a grading permit and "fixed" violation for the dirt removal vs. saving the $300 for the grading permit and going straight to a building permit.

By doing that, the violation for dirt removal/site work was tied to the building permit - and then every single inspector that came out would see the violation and do a (better) job of inspecting. I failed framing 3X - and a professional framer did the work!

Lesson learned.

YOU NEED A TRANSMISSION!

The weight of the engine is pulling it down in the back behind the motor mounts. I'll bet you the engine would sit more level with the transmission installed. :deal: that should resolve the interference on that one side.

Failing that, modify the engine crossmember to shift the engine 1/4" to the side. Measure from the crank pulley bolt to the inside of each framerail.... You may not be "dead nuts" centered as it sits currently anyway....

My two Lincolns.... :D

Boom! Done! In yo face Greg! :D

(3.5 years later!!)

Damn you work FAST!!!!!

....and Moab 2018 is still 880 days away. :)

Plenty of time to knock-out the few remaining items that I see you still need....

Sh*t - and just like that my balloon is popped! :D

And I still have that Moab date on my calendar!

Well the good news is that my son is excited to work on it now - and is old enough to be helpful - we are aiming to get transfer case bolted in this week! He is a better project manager than me also!

– this was also the opening day for Oregon State football which was the day that the Beavers lost to Eastern Washington – not a great day for me…

You could please take that dip shit back? Nebraska lost to Purdue, and Illinois last year.......

I just stumbled on this thread for the first time. Any updates on the shop? I became just as interested in it as the Blazer.

I feel your pain - I'm so so sorry - but no way. I was so happy when Riley left OSU. So sick of the "golly-gee willikers guys!" It is very tough being a Beaver fan/alum in Oregon right now with the success of the D*cks down south. It was time for a change!

I will work on posting a shop update soon!
