it's only to help hold the T-case in place while the front drive shaft beats on it front to back. That's all. It's not there to hold the weight or stop rotation. Consider how hard it is to push and extend the front shaft (even if you think it's not that hard) now imagine the T-case feeling that ALL the time, even on the street.
I'm not a big fan of mounting the case to the frame. Everything twists and will stress the case, especially an aluminum case. Unless you have buggy, like @MNorby, or truggy that's more cage than not, I'd think the torque rod will suffice.
