73 K20....crossmember time

The fuel injection is pretty much a necessity considering the purpose of the vehicle.

Yeah I agree. I did ok with the carb but the rubicon alone gave me some hell. Ive been driving it with that in mind so itll be nice to go wherever I want with it. Im curious to see what fuel pump others are running...

Got the fuel tank stuff all figured out. Im going to buy a new tbi tank with a in tank fuel pump. Ill be cutting a hole in the bed for easy access in case I need to make a trail repair. Id like to switch over to braided fuel line while im at it.

I worked like crazy today on the truck. Mainly just stripping it down to pull the motor.

Id really like to try to make these fenders look better...maybe just make the cuts more of a flowing sweep?

Got this handy lifting fixture from summit...14 bucks

The usable portion of diy4x frame boxing kit came in. Cant wait to get these in.

Still need to take the steering box off but heres another shot of the booboo. Ill get the box off, cut the cross member out, grind the frame then weld the crack. Then ill need to plate it.

The motor is close to being ready to pull. Its great not having the smog and ac crap on there any more. I plan on leak checking the motor and checking the bearings next weekend. Anyone hear run a high clearance pan?

Thanks! Taking stuff apart is easy!

I got the ac unit out today, tranny cooler/ oil cooler stuff out as well. Ill have to replace the oil cooling stuff since it was destroyed getting it out but im alright with that since it was really old.

I need to have the radiator cleaned as well...im not sure its even worth it. If its $100 to fix it and $200 for a new one then I wont waste my time.

Just get rid of the oil cooler. Buy the 15 dollar adapter from summit. One less thing to leak on a wheeling rig.

I was wondering the importance of the oil cooler....

Its not like its a mud truck spinning high rpm. I definitely looked at it as a catastrophic failure if it brooe or the lines got cut.

I asked the question a long time ago. The concencous was to ditch the cooler unless I was towing for long periods of time. My rig gets trailered everywhere so I got rid of it. My other k5 didn't have them.

Ok thanks guy! 1 less thing to go wrong and more cool air for my radiator!

Does anyone known what the max lift is for stock valve springs in my 350? Im looking at getting a comp cam xtreme 4x4... max exhaust lift is .453"

Im not sure what the condition of the head gaskets are other than not blown.... while I have the motor on a stand should I replace them? Or am I opening a can of worms?

If the motor is smoked ill probably build a 383. I hope its ok...odo says 183k but the po may have had it rebuilt. The trans was way cleaner than what I think an original would look like and I have a feeling the front clip has been off before...

Your heads will work with that cam but I would not run it unless you upgrade the springs, stock springs are not very good and they float pretty early.. IMHO get the K kit with the lifters and the springs. If you don't already have a good timing chain get that also.

Summit Heater....

Hmm. I dont need anything special for our "cold weather" but they do look like nice units.

Ok good to know. Yeah timing chain is definitely on my list of things to replace. K kit? Ive heard people use z28 springs too..

Whats your plans for tuning? Even a little mild built engine will run horrible on stock prom TBI ECM.

Yeah the more i read about tbi the more i find that out. Im not entirely sure yet as far as tuning goes. Theres a few guys doing tbi stuff but it looks like its $175 for a new chip. Which is half the cost of a diy megasquirt...

I hear that the tbi will deal with a small cam fine but is the addition of headers and a performer manifold too much to ask of it? Ive sort of barely scratched the surface on my research so im still reading a bunch.

Do you know of a better route?
