1300obo submitted a new Build:

73 k5 blank slate

i saw this on the side of the road and have always loved the old k5's. its the same year as my bronco. I had little to no experience working on cars but I thought we could tinker with it and it would be fun for the kids to drive around on the property. promptly blew a head gasket and sat for quite a while until I managed to get it titled and then I found this website and got all kinds of false courage and now its down to the frame. the might as well build and where do I go from here by dirsuper got me tearing into it and the more I looked the more I realized the whole thing had to come apart. im learning a lot but now in the reassembly phase I'm getting to where I need some guidance. I want a realiable cruiser restomod when im done and there aren't many rocks to crawl on around here so I was thinking a conservative 2" lift on 33's. rebuild the stock dana 44 (3.07/8.5). 383 stroker crate. I was wanting to use the existing turbo 350/np203 but I know there are strong opinions on the site regarding transmission tx case combos and I welcome any and all input. first things first, does anybody know a good source for a dana 44 rebuild kit bom 603374-8? no crush sleeve, just a shim kit. ring and pinion look ok, just need bearings/seals/shims

I love the 73-75 k5s I’ll be following your build.

It’s easy to let it sit... I took advice from a friend, spend at least an hour a day on it...
Looks like a fun project... I’ll be watching for progress
@1300obo this is good advice, take small bites everyday. Ordering or cleaning parts counts the days you're not "into it"

For the transfer case, a 203 works fine. A 241 or 208 has a much better ratio, but may need a rebuild.

For the Dana 44, look for a "master kit"
Companies like Offroad Design, the 4xstore, or nitro gear and axle work well

I would ponder a gear change if it were mine. 3.08 is a good rifle, not so much for gears

I agree with @Bent77 , and his advice.

If you aren't going to be using it at highway speeds, or very little on the highway, I would look at lower gears. I believe that you can go to 3:73 on the same carrier in the front axle, but the rear differential would have to change carrier.
The 203 is fine for lots of things, as long as it is in good shape. The shifter can be cranky if it is dirty and not lubricated.

I don't know about that
My k5 with the perkins turbo diesel and sm465/205 was only good enough because of the 3.08 gears on 35" tires.
I could have gone bigger tires but I didn't need to.

He’s going with a gas engine

I installed a of Yukon 373s in my front D44 it was a oddball gear set in there but my 70 C30 has the 373s with 33” tires & is pretty good on the highway although the 35s were better but it has a SM465

thanks for everyone's input. .308 is what I shoot too. great for whitetail and possibly as a gear ratio (I hope) for my purposes. I know you guys out west do crazy fun stuff with yours but mine will probably just be cruising down country roads. wire brushed the frame all afternoon and I have two bad rivets on the passenger rear shackle mount, one gone and the other broken, planning to use ss bolts to remedy. don't think I'm up learning to rivet frames at this point. I did order the complete Yukon gear bearing/seal kit from my local advance auto today. don't know why I didn't wait for advice, must be attention deficit problems. thanks again

A good remedy for those rivets is to go up one size bolt from the hole

Careful with the stainless steel bolts, they like to gall and seize, even with antisieze. I cut 2-3 a week off

Yeah with a healthy stroker and the th350 you will be good for 33" if all you want is a driver.
You won't be pulling any mountains but you will have decent mileage and very nice rpms cruising on the highway

you think I should try rivets? or a different kind of bolt?
