you think I should try rivets? or a different kind of bolt?
I am using flange frame bolts...grade 8 bound flange bolts are best. Bound bolts have grooves on the shank between the (flanged) Head & threads. They fit so well that you have to tighten the nut to pull them through the hole.
Just remember, in addition to drilling one size up make sure they fit tight & torque them every 100 miles or so foe about 500 miles. Here is a good source

yeah, thanks guys. I don't know why I was thinking stainless, I will hunt down some grade 8's and drill up. that's why I love this site. it won't keep from me from doing stupid stuff every now and then but it does improve my odds

Well the rest of us are well versed in doing dumb things
:D

bearing and seal kit finally came for the front axle(also comes with new outer shims) and I did finish brushing and painting the carrier but im looking at this pinion assembly and it doesn't look right. I think the last guy who messed with it put the baffle on the wrong side of the outer shims which may explain why a few of them were in pieces. any ideas? the diagram on rangerstation suggests that the baffle goes on the pinion before the shims and that kind of makes more sense.

Looks like a it’s going to be a nice build. I had a question how can I post my project. I cannot find a way to post pictures and talk about my build. I’m new to the CK5 site. Any info would help thanks!
No worries!

There's a post count minimum. Hit a few threads and make yourself at home
But the easiest way is the membership

FYI, I post directly through the "upload file or photo" button and skip the media upload
Try out the Test Forum too if you get bored

Welcome to CK5!

Here's the exploded view of the dana 44 front axle. I think I'm just going to put the pinion, bearings and shims back in as shown and hopefully it'll work out. We'll see what the lead paint test looks like

I agree with @Bent77 , and his advice.

If you aren't going to be using it at highway speeds, or very little on the highway, I would look at lower gears. I believe that you can go to 3:73 on the same carrier in the front axle, but the rear differential would have to change carrier.
The 203 is fine for lots of things, as long as it is in good shape. The shifter can be cranky if it is dirty and not lubricated.

Yes... get the ORD “off road design” twin stick. I had a hell of a time with a sticky stock shifter. Its worth the $ to buy the twin stick.

will do guys, thanks for the advice. before the engine blew I noticed the shifter was a little tough to deal with. also it will be real easy to change out with the drivetrain currently scattered around the shop
