so I got a little more information on the 383 I am looking at and the roller cam is a .528/.536 lift, 221/226 duration and 110deg lobe separation. it has a 750cfm carb with 10:1 compression ratio and makes 350ft/lbs at 2000 rpm and about 400 and up past 3000rpm. gotta do a little more learning to see if i will make enough vacuum for the brakes and pick a correct torque converter but i'm getting close to ordering

Sounds like you are dialing it in
yeah, i'm feeling alot better about it since researching it and talking to everybody. just gotta save a little and get it shipped. meanwhile, starting work on getting tx case, transmission and driveshafts back in

I gotta pick a motor next. Thanks for helpful info.

I was thinking of replacing bearings and seals on the 203 but I cant really find any info on how to do that. Found alot of stuff on other tx cases. Alot of people apparently make them into boat anchors but nobody seems to be rebuilding them. It has the conversion kit and doesn't leak. I think I'll pressure wash it and put it back in as is

Thanks
Nice avatar

I think the knock on the 203 is that most folks don’t understand them, so they drop them on the ground. Then they get turned into doublers

fresh seals on the inputs and outputs, good shift linkage adjustment, and it will probably suit you well

Some recent chatter on the 203

thanks, i'll check out the link. regarding the avatar, since it seems we have to choose sides these days, i want the cop pulling me over to know which side i'm on

i'm guessing replacing the seals is basically like the pinion seal on the diff? i rely alot on youtube but again, no youtube stuff on the 203

If you’re only doing the in/outputs, the aluminum bearing retainers in your photo (and one in the back) are easily removed. Drive the seal out from the back, reinstall new, and add the gasket to reinstall the retainer

If you’re going to do the whole case gasket set, it’s a bit more involved

I would suggest looking for the gaskets for the bearing retainers before you pull them. Make sure that you can get them easily. The one on the input shaft is on that I don't know if you can find in parts stores. I have pulled lots of seals by drilling a hole in the seal and using a screw to either jack it out or as a tab to pull it with pliers.

If your 203 is fairly quiet in 4wd, then I would use it. The chains in them are expensive the last time I looked into one twenty years ago. Not sure now. And it isn't as easy to rebuild as a 208 or 241, so when you look at the low range ratio compared to the aluminum cases, most will opt to leave the 203 in the past.

If it isn't leaking, I would probably go with your plan of wash, paint and install.

Some of the seal retainers need a gasket to space them out enough for minimal clearance on the snap ring around the bearing. Check on that for CYA.
The input one could be just RTV from what I remember.
