73 k5 blank slate

I just discovered this build and for that I'm sorry because this is good stuff, but what I'm not sorry about is not having to do quarter panels. Looks extremely tedious. Keep up the good work and good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement, i thought about patch panels but with the rot in the lower b pillar, upper bedrail (well, pretty much everywhere) it made more sense to do it this way. I've been following your sheet metal repair as well. Nice work!

Man, I need to come back and look at these pics the next time I think I’ve got a lot to do.

I'm actually relieved I won't have to weld the new fender on. Something like 10 sheet metal bolts and a few spot welds on the inside b pillar

I couldn't find a name for this part but I'm calling it lower b pillar bracket unless someone knows. I don't think they make a replacement part for it

Yep, slow methodical stuff, especially when you've never done sheet metal work. I can see why the shop told me to come get it

Shoot, you'd have a pretty penny invested if you were paying man hrs at a shop for this endeavor.

I think you are doing as good a job as most modern day shops that don’t specialize in older vehicles. The shops nowadays are tied to insurance companies and do a different kind of work to stay in business, from my experience

i don't begrudge him for not doing the work. he's kind of a friend of ours and i had noticed alot of classic cars outside his shop on the way to work so i asked him if he would help me with the k5. as it turned out he never could keep enough manpower around to have time to mess with it and still get his insurance work done. i knew it wasn't the type of work he was looking for. he helps me out on occasion and answers questions when i get stuck on something. he's a good dude. reminds me of a funny story about my older brother who has been doing body work in some capacity in west tennessee for the past 50 years. a long time ago, our sister's husband bought a rusted out 64 nova convertible and kind of just had it towed to my brother's house so he could "fix it up" for him. no formal agreement, he just thought he (or probably more likely my sister) could talk him into doing it. i mean, what else does a guy who busts his ass in the body shop all day want to do when he gets home- oh yeah, rust repair!! anyway that car must have sat for 6 or seven years before my brother in law came and hauled it off

thanks for posting that link!! it saved me alot of time and i've looked through most of it pertaining to the quarters but still have a ways to go, just ran out of time today. it really helped me see alot of problems that might await me. from what i see so far, i am definitely going to :

1. go ahead and get body mount kit and put the body back on the frame
2. fit rocker and quarter before welding rocker
3. finish sandblasting the underside before putting body back on frame
4. fit doors before welding quarter
5. hope i don't have to do body mount shims

if it gets too hairy trying to get door gaps right, theres always tube doors, haha

It's been awhile and I'm still in bodywork hell. Nothing to report on the k5 unfortunately but decided I needed a bigger place both to work on this and also to accommodate other projects so I had a 40x60 shop built so I can work on stuff without tripping or knocking stuff over as my old shop was packed

Foundation going in. 16x16in perimeter reinforced footings along with 2 that run the length of the slab to support 2nd floor



framers had this done in about a dayby early summer last year exterior completed, center door is 12x14



It's really nice having room and being able to put the boat inside for the winter


6 in of sprayfoam keeps the place pretty reasonable, even in the summer

I designed an upstairs so I don't have to see any of the stuff my wife wants to put in the shop for storage


I've had an old 1950s tanker desk under the house I just had no place to put so went ahead and stripped and painted that and a friend had an old ww2 era chair he gave me

I've got to weld an old mower deck ( new one is $4k) then it's back to the k5
Anyway, hopefully some progress soon. Appreciate everyone's help over the years. In a way ck5 is responsible for the new shop as I never would have built it without the brotherhood keeping me going on this thing. Thanks guys

Oh yeah, 4000 psi concrete 6 in thick and the posts will go near the 18 in footings. With the hot weather coming I need to get a minisplit installed in this area first though so I can weld through the summer
