'73 k5 Build - New Drivetrain - 350/3500/241/205

Been getting a lot of stuff done on my k5 this winter break so decided to post up my progress.

Almost done converting to 1350's up front. I swapped in a 32 spline ford shaft in the 205 for more yoke options. Made a square drive shaft with ttb50 axle shafts and some 1/4" tube. Just need a 1350 yoke for the 60 (should have one tomorrow).

Finally got tired of the ****ty ride from the cheap springs so I built a shackle flip for the rear with some leftover steel from the drive shaft. Pulled every other leaf from my 56's and ended up with 3 and the overload. Threw on some 7.25" shackles from Kert and she is sitting about .5" higher then the old springs.

While I had the axle out I welded the spiders up (the right way this time) into a little orb of traction. I also threw on a diff cover from Kert, an unwelded flat, my welds aren't as pretty as Kerts but they got good penitration. Gave it a little shave too, not too much just smoother the lip.

In the front I pulled the bottom leaf from the lift springs and put in a degree shim dropping it down .5" from before. Threw another of Kerts diff covers on there too. Hopefully tomorrow I will get a yoke for the front blead the brakes and flex it to measure for shocks. Probably end up inbording the rears somehow :dunno:

Looked for yokes at the junkyard today and could only find strap setups, so I might spring for a new one. Got some seat sliders for the drivers seat out of a little sedan

Took it out for a little test today to measure for shocks. Some nice little poser pictures

there is something shocking under your rig!
:D
I seem to be missing a few of those shocking things too. It made for quite an interesting drive, pretty damn bouncy.

Got some work done on the seat sliders tonight. You can't really tell in the picture cause of the glare but I sunk the front mount into the tube about 3/4" to keep the seat low, the cage is pretty close to my head as it is. Still need a few bolts to get it all finished up.

I got the seat in and the slider all worked out. I found a yoke for the 60 at a semi local fab shop so I plan on getting that in and done with tomorrow. Any advise on how to get the old yoke off, 25 years of sitting on a part that is torqued to somewhere near 200ft/lbs makes for quit the pain in the ass. I am going to wedge the brake pedal to the floor to keep the truck from moving so that won't be a problem. The bigest issue is there is not much room for a cheater bar and I dont have an impact. Any advise would be great thanks

I have a set of harbor frieght 3/4 inch sockets with a cheater bar, I needed a dana 70 yoke and I found one under a smaller motor home... not easy to get. I had the whole rv moving on me as aI tried:crazy: Ended up chalking all the tires and eventually broke it loose.

used a long pipe to break it loose, had little to no room between the ground and siding on the rv but I got it. Then used my 1/2 ratchet with a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter to get it off quicker.

It took a while but I got the damn thing off. I had a piece of pvc pipe from the seat to the brake pedal, looked like I was power braking the thing when I tried to break it loose. After I chalked both the front tires I finally got it off. Its nice to have a front shaft in again it had been a while.

I found a piece of aluminum that I plan to mount to the roll cage between the 2 front seats. I plan on putting my cb up there to make room in my center console.

I am thinking about adding some more top my cage, it is pretty minimal right now so here is my idea in red critique away

Got some stuff done today, put in the 2 bars between the a and b. Used .12 wall HREW, a sawzall to notch and a 110 lincoln with flux core to burn it in. Mounted a piece of aluminum between them and then put a mount for my cb up there. I plan on moving my switches up there eventually cause I dont like how they are set up now

Looks good so far. Keep up the good work!

Scott
Thanks

I got a little bit done today, for almost a year I have been putting off running the cage to the frame on the passenger side because the drivers was such a pain in the ass but thats done now. Here is the drivers side, I forgot to get pics from today but is the same minus the mud, 2" .12 wall HREW through a poly bushing to the frame

I found some older pictures, not sure if I ever posted
This is when I got her

Primer, rustoleum rolled on, then rustoleum gloss black sprayed over. It turned out pretty bad I will probably redo that eventually. She is on stock 1/2 tons with mismatched gears and bald 33's then 35's in the painted with tons. I think the 35's lasted all of 2o miles before the h1's and 38's

Stinger tire rack for the back, still need to get a spare and finish mounting that...

I should have some wheeling picture after tomorrow

Went to a little local spot today, some guy who just opens up his land every Sunday and made a bunch of trails, mostly tight hill climbs and some narrow canyons. Scuffed the thing up a little, broke the passenger mirror, cracked both tail lights and rearranged some sheet metal. Only got one picture, that wheel is probably 5 feet up

Nice wheeling pic. I like the flat black. Looks better than the gloss would, I think.
Thanks, it is gloss actually, its just covered mud/dust. If I did it again I would have gone flat.

Send me a PM when you want to get a plan to go. It would be cool to go with you on a 'Con run.
It would be nice to go with some other fullsize rigs. Could probably get a few other ck5ers in on it too, the blazen offroad crew is close to the con, blazerboss85 will probably want to go when his trazer is done and I am sure there are others. Damn that means I and going to have to get that locker and 35 spline stuff for up front:D
