'73 K5 - Stevoandaredk5's Build - [Pre-Summer Update - (4/5/11)]

well guys, it's all worth it in the end. Cranked the truck up this afternoon, she runs like a top, have the headlights on relays, and a ridiculous amount of extra wiring that I will have to put somewhere...

however on my quickie test drive up the street, i noticed that the brakes are spongy and it pulls to the right, so i have to check brakes before starting to drive it again. I swapped on a new drivers side hub while the truck was out of commission, might have messed up brakes then, or i have a leak, or i just need to re-bleed the system cuz it's been a while and sat alot. anyway, i like brakes better than electrical:D

thanks so much for the input and help on the rewire, i'm so glad it all worked out.

thanks, i'm working on it tonight and hopefully it'll be something simple, just gonna troubleshoot, but i'll check the cylinder at each wheel.

Back on the road...for now

Well the wiring harness is done other than wipers and horn, might work on that tonight. I drove it today even though the drivers front caliper is dragging and the pedal is still very spongy, just was braking extremely early, i can still lock em up if I slam them like in an emergency...

I'm taking it to a shop monday morning, let them check the brakes.

I did pull the carb wednesday night, cleaned it up and readjusted most of the linkages so I have an idle that's not 1800rpms:doah: Still needs some work but it's driveable. I'm working on getting the funds for the 35's together, but i know i need good brakes before adding bigger meats...

I may put up some pics of the new harness if i have time and can find the camera...

EDIT:

oh yeah, and I may be picking up a '74 blazer tub and hardtop if the parentals give the green light...it's only $100:D

Updated to do list

Today was my last day of high school:woot:(i say "day", i only had 1 final, i was only there for about an hour and a half) graduation is a week away. Haven't been doing a whole lot on the truck, still need to figure out the hub situation to get it back on the road. Here's what I'm looking at:

  1. Driver's Side Front Hub (Original is out of round and stripped, making racket)
  2. Finish up last bit of wiring and gauges and reinstall dash
  3. Finish Metalwork (cut drivers rear fender, cap sliders, fill floorboard gap, lots of welding)
  4. POR-15 specific areas and Herculine entire tub
  5. New Tires (35x12.50r15 BFG KM2's)
  6. Modify Drivers Side Tailgate Hinge to bolt up
  7. Seat Belts (Either 3pt stockers or 5pt harnesses)
  8. Paint (Red Body, Black Hardtop)

Sweet

I like the red/black top scheme

Make sure you get a roll bar and a bikini top for the summer!

I've already got the rollbar:D

and a bikini top is in the works, i've been tossing around ideas for how to attach it, i already have the material.

I worked on the dash and gauges today(keeping with the red/black scheme), took some pics but i'll have to post when i get home from work.

here's what i got done today:

The dash was originally tan, but i roughed it up just a little and then wiped it down with some Marine Clean, paint stuck great, i was surprised. I was gonna do more red, but me and my dad agreed that just the emblem looks pretty sweet.

I still have to hook up the fuel gauge, and i will probably be putting in a volt gauge to match the other sunpros. eventually i hope to put in all aftermarket gauges, but a mix of the two will definitely work for now.

not too bad for a litle elbow grease and some paint:D

that thing would look great with a 4" suspension and some 35's. Are you going to lift it for those 35"KM2's you mentioned?

Your avatar shows you stuffing the 31's with stock suspension

IT'll take alot more than a "little" trimming to keep the 35's from banging everything!

At least get 1" zero rates and a 1"body lift from ORD to give you a little bit more clearance:eek1:

There is a guy I'm getting some parts from up in Sherman (same guy with the 10-bolt front I mentioned) that has 4"rear lift blocks that he took off his Suburban. He would probably take $20 for them and you can find some cheap, used 2" or 4" lift front springs off here or on texas4x4

i've already test fitted with a 35, especially on the front, i don't think i'll worry until i get the swaybar disconnect kit on there. plus if i was gonna lift it...it be a shackle flip, etc, etc. and i don't want to start all that yet. i know 35's will fit, plus there ain't no rocks here in the pine forest for me to do too much flexing on anyways haha.

i've already discussed the 35's with no lift idea here: http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248617

Ok, I'm sold on it now. Try to trim like the dude in the 70's brown and tan blazer. That is a nice cut. Hardly noticeable and he must have cut 3-4" off

Sounds like shock length and bumpstop location will be all you'll need to be concerned about

I hope that 355ci is torquey. 35's on stock 3.08's will be a drag

An old friend of mine had a '73 Jimmy that ran an old stock 350 out of a '70 Vette with 35x12.50's and 3.08's and it had plenty of grunt. Probably had around 300HP though

post pics when you get the tires!

i've got 3.73's, and i built the 355 up good, should probably have about 350hp and 350-400ft lb torque.

and there will definitely be pic whoring:D

Update...or not an update?

Haven't posted in a while, mostly because I have been busy(graduation) or gone(Destin, FL) and have not gotten anything done. I take that back, I did pick up 2 mossy oak bucket seat covers for $5ea at academy on sunday, now i just need to pick up a matching one for the rear bench.

I have had no, and I mean NO(0,zero,zilch,nada,zip), luck on finding the part(s) I need to fix the front axle. I don't want to drop $200 for a new hub when I could get a whole axle for that, but if I don't find something used and on the cheap soon, i'm gonna spend the money anyways, cuz I REALLY want my truck back haha. So if anybody has a d44 6 lug hub with the smaller inner bearing....:D (or a set of matching 6lug hubs and spindles) I'll gladly take them off your hands. (btw thanks to Stomis up in NJ for helping me out in my search:waytogo:)

I have the funds for the new tires, but I either need to put the truck on blocks(or jack stands for the safety concious lol) and take the existing wheels and tires off for the swap at the shop, or get the truck fixed and drive it in. The latter is preferred b/c that means my truck is back on the freaking road. ha

Basically, I have run into the classic CK5 problem, at one moment I have lots of time and no money or parts, the next minute I have money and parts but no time...what a terrible cycle.:haha:

(My apologies for the lack of useful content in this post, I'm pretty bored at work...:doah:)
