'73 - "Malik" 1 Ton K5 Continuation Build

I wonder what a 42x15x16.5" looks like on a 16.5x.6.75" wheel?

Martin

I have taken apart and rebuilt several 300s, put them next to a 205 and you will banish all thoughts of running a 300, they are tiny. One of the reasons Jeep guys like em so much they fit and are very very short.

While the 203/300 may win in that comparison a 241/ 241 kicks its butt in ultimate gearing.

I crawl with a 203/205 Th350 and 4.56s it doesn't really need deeper gears, and my motor is dead stock

You have to experiment with the 16.5s hopefully you have somewhere close to home to mess with em.

I ran about 10-12 lbs in them all the time off road.

Oddly enough with my H1s I still run around 10 psi. you turn better and keep some ground clearance, unless I am in snow and then I go down to 5 or so.

I'm just going to buy some beadlock kits for 16.5" wheels. They're only $160 from DIYBeadlocks.com.

The wheels I have right now seem pretty nice. I bet someone would be willing to trade them for their black steel wheels. If not I could grab a set for $360 new. Even cheaper just getting some off of craigslist/pirate.

Well I take that back. Looks like DIYBeadlocks.com was just having a holiday sale, and they're back at $200.

Total Metal Innovations sells a 1/4" set for $210 and theirs come with an integrated anti-coning ring.

I'm home from deployment!

I picked the Blazer up from the shop it was sitting at and drove it around the neighborhood for a while heating up the gears and letting them cool, starting the break-in process. I waited until it was later in the night before I drove it home just in case anything happened so I wouldn't be around a lot of other vehicles. It was definitely like driving a tank down the road. I lost all of my gauge lighting about 5 minutes into it. The tires had some serious flat spots and around 40mph they started to wobble, so I just took it nice and slow. Only issue on the way home was a spike in the temperature gauge.

I spent a few hours changing out fluids and checking oil levels the following day. There was a lot of trash inside so I was trying to separate the goods from the trash and have less bouncing around when I take if offroad for the first time! :waytogo:

I was hoping to have a few grand to dump into this thing when I got home, but a trailer deal fell though and I had to pick up a different one. I think it worked out for the better though.

I found one for $2500 a few hours away in Southern Colorado. I talked with the guy and told him if I drove down there he could keep the fancy loading ramps he had and I'd take it "as is" for $1850; he agreed. She's old and beat, but pretty heavy duty for a tandem axle.

18ft (16ft flat + 2ft dovetail
Both axles have brakes
Both are 5000lb axles
All new wiring
2 5/16 Ball
4 brand new tires
1 good spare

It's got some weak fenders and horrible green (house paint?) on the the wood. Planning on cutting the fenders off completely and building some ramp style ones out of 1/8" 2x8 steel. The ramps look pretty easy to make, but for now I can climb up on the trailer in 4lo with relative ease.

About 30 mins west of Cheyenne is a place called Vedauwoo. A bunch of my co-workers were going to to do some shooting and drive their stock trucks on some dirt trails. I figured it would be a good time to find out what this rig can do in it's current form and to identify some weaknesses.

My diesel is having some injector issues right now so a friend towed me out there and we really had a blast. I was too busy having fun and driving around that I didn't get many pictures or videos. Some of the other guys snapped a few shots and got some video too. I'll post that up later when I get them all in. :saweet:

Overall I'd say it did really well. I had very few issues all day and didn't break anything! At first I was going pretty easy, then I started really climbing up some rock trails. No issues. Excellent.

Coming from the Jeep world this is a whole new type of wheeling! Feels like I'm climbing with a astro van! It feels so giant and heavy! The spools did great though, I had no problems going up vertical rocks and crawling right over. Turning was an issue but I don't see the difference between spools and detroits. They both suck at turning, but I don't mind making 5 point turns. Plenty of time. Getting through the snow was pretty tough at 12psi in the tires and the heavy weight.

The limitations were pretty clear right from the beginning:

Brakes need some work. The front rotors are warped really bad and need to be replaced. Master cylinder is pretty beat aswell.

image2_zps9feb94ad.jpeg

the front suspension has a ton of travel and the tires didn't rub on the fenders anywhere despite not having bumpstops on either side. The limiting factor is the shocks. They're beat and I really can't even tell they are there. They're just limiting my down travel.

The leaf springs up front are built with different leafs and the overload on one side is cut off on the front side :dunno:? I'm going to trim them all to match.

image6_zps186e7366.jpeg

The steering box is leaking from the tapped holes. Also I'm getting my 40 degrees turning one way, but only about 30 degrees the other way.

Last, but not least, something up front is bent or mounted wrong. It's hard to tell with everything in the way right now, but the drivers side hood and fender are considerably higher than the passenger. Maybe a bent frame. If so, I'll reinforce it and keep going. This is a trail rig so I'm fine with that.

While I was deployed Ballistic Fabrication had a "End of the world" sale and I thought it would be a good time to pick up some stuff from them even though it's a little out of order.

14 bolt pinion guard
1/8" shock hoops for the front
Shock brackets with bung style
Dana 60 C gussets
Misc shock tabs for the rear.

Once the weather is a little friendlier and I have some spare time I'll tackle the front end:

Remove inner fenders
Trim outer fenders more
Identify bent metal
Clean frame and cut off the extra junk
Mount shock hoops
Gusset Dana 60 C
Rebuild spring packs
New rotors/pads
Mount new shocks

I still need to get the shocks and rotors. As said earlier, I'm going to be using Rancho 9012's. Hopefully on the higher setting they can handle the weight of this beast.

Man it looks like the guy i sold it to ran it hard and put it away wet.

It needs a longer pittman arm to get full throw steering. A superlift 1104 will solve that. The shocks are super worthless as is and i set them up to be limit straps/bumpstops basically. That one side overload was cut when it had a d44 front so the tierod would clear the spring. I would reccomend getting another overload and keeping them full length.
I did the twinstick to get rid of the crappy stock shifter setup that always popped out of gear.

One stick is lock and unlock , the other is h-n-l.

I ran it in lock h on the street with the hubs unlocked. if you have the stick in unlock and the hubs are unlocked all the power goes to the front and it doesnt move.

Any other questions just ask. I didnt cut too many corners on it but it did have a lot of issues.

Yeah, it's been pretty ugly. I'm in the process of tearing out and off all of the extra junk that's been laying around and bolted on.

I found that pitman arm you're talking about. You're sure that arm will fit on a Chevy steering box? Is the TRE end big enough for the full size chevy TRE?

What kind of problems were you having when you had it? I haven't noticed anything too crazy yet.

I'm splitting time and money between these three guys. I'd like to dump it all into the Blazer but for it to get out to the trail I'm going to need all three working well.

Rigs look so much cooler with the pieces torn off! I'm cutting a little bit more out of the front fenders and taking a bunch off the front. The grill pieces will go back on afterwards.

The guy that sold me the trailer wanted $500 for the ramps that he had for it. I took a look at them and decided I could easily make them myself for $100 bucks, and I did. This week I realized that if I ever need to through a car or truck with normal size tires on the bed the ramp gaps will be to far apart so I picked up some more steel and I'm planning on filling the gaps and then painting them black to match. They're made out of .188" x 2.5 x 2.5 angled steel. The wheel wells were really tight and ghetto fabbed so those were cut off and now I need to find some C channel to make some new really simple fenders.

The parts are slowly adding up! They should all be in by next weekend if these guys hurry up and get them in the mail.

Bumpstops
Rancho 999012 Shocks
Pitman Arm
DIY4X 52B Spring Hangers
DIY4X EZ inch
Dana 60 Rotors
(Also have a steering column gauge pod and a EGT kit by Autometer for the Diesel coming in)

IMG_1194_zpsecb2acf0.jpg

The bumper setup is going to be pretty simple. Square tubing on front of the frame, welded to .250 steel that will be bolted to the sides of the frame, flat .250 steel plate on top bolted to frame and bumper. I'm thinking something like the blazer version of this:

Ready to redo the front suspension when all the parts show up!

IMG_1189_zps01739b31.jpg

Also got the BF pinion guard on the 14 bolt.

Please do the fenders like this!!!!

This was next on the agenda and i never got around to it. Would look soo sick with the jeepish bumper too.

Wow, it's been a year since I've updated anything on this thread. I had a busy 2013 with the Air Force. I was traveling around so much I barely got to work on it and only took it out three times. I just recently separated and now I'm doing the Air Force Reserves, so once I'm done training in OK, I'll be ready to take this thing out on some local trails I grew up with and continue building it. All that's really changed is major trimming, front bumper, shock hoops and shocks.

Moved back to California so a little further away now.

Mostly just a bunch of poser shots since no one else was taking pictures, but here's a few pictures since the last time I posted:
