74 K5 - Harry's Budget Blazer

Making some progress...

Got the wheels mounted. They are definitely sucked in compared to the previous ones. Look a little goofy in my opinion with gold lug nuts.

Also managed to spend more money and bought an exhaust kit from Summit. 2 1/4inch Hooker kit for manifolds. Currently the headers on it are leaky, rusty and someone welded the exhaust to one of them. Figured I would go with manifolds because I am cheap and they were free.

old exhaust

I also got a couple of pictures of my old exhaust and a short video of it running. The quality isn't that great, but hopefully it will provide a nice before and after comparison later. I really hope there is a noticeable difference. Still working on uploading the video.

hood problems

Also for some reason I lost the springs which hold my hood open. Turns out that is pretty annoying. I currently have another hood with good hinges to put on when I get around to it. I grabbed a couple of pics of a previous owners repair on the hinges.

I should have sold you the hood and springs off my k5. They where mint.

Wheels look good. Even with gold nuts:whistle:

Yep, wheels look awesome...

Time to cut some sliders into those missing rocker panels...

That is something I want to do and hopefully will in time. I always look for suitable tubing while at the metal recyclers, but have yet to find any. I will probably have to break down and just buy a stick.

On another note I tried driving it with the hubs locked in and it did not go well. It made a banging noise (I know real descriptive) as it rolled in both neutral and in drive. Also had lots of trouble making a simple 90* turn on gravel. I jacked the front tires up and they spun freely without the hubs locked in. With the hubs unlocked the truck rolled fine and didn't make any noise. I have a funny feeling the rear end I put in may have a different ratio then the front. I didn't actually check it, but took my friends word for it.

The current goal is have it driving well enough by Thanksgiving to go to the dunes.

maybe your front drive line is shot...:dunno:

two different ratios and she'd a bound up and bucked and not wanted to go anywhere

I wouldn't think the front driveshaft is shot, because I was driving it around in front wheel drive only for part of the summer. This is when I didn't have a rear driveshaft. It actually drove great with no weird vibrations or noises.

This is the first vehicle I have had with a 203. I have been doing some research on it and will hopefully have a better idea about what is going on when I get a chance to look at it. Up until the other day I didn't even know what the shift pattern was. There is no sticker in the vehicle, indicator plate or helpful picture on the shifter knob. When I googled it, I had pictures of shift patterns of everything from np205's to jeep cases.

When I last worked on it Monday my brain was so frazzled I was trying random combinations of neutral and drive, hubs locked/unlocked, and different locations of the transfercase shifter. I hope to be a little more systematic about it next time.

I am pretty sure it is full time, but I will have to verify that next time I get a chance. I seem to remember with the hubs unlocked only two T-case lever positions actually allowing movement. I want to say it was all the way forward and all the way back. Seems like this would make it a full time 205.

Luckily for me there was a helpful thread in the garage today breaking it down. So if it is still full time I believe the shift pattern is:

Lo Lock
Lo
N
HI
HI Lock

update cont.

Well with all the sunny weather we have had and some swap meet purchases, I got motivated to work on the blazer.

Current list includes:

Fix exhaust
-Get old studs out of manifolds
-Install Hooker 2 1/4" kit I bought with flow master knockoffs

Install roll bar that I got from the swap meet
-May have to modify the rear supports.

Figure out why the idle is slow and rough

Clean up the bed rails and the truck in general.
-I have never really done this, so it is really overdue.

Find a new tailgate
-The window mechanism doesn't really work. I ended up just pulling out the glass.

And finally take the truck to the Oregon Dunes! That is the real goal by the end of summer.

progress

Here are a couple of pics of the rusty bed rails. I ended up hitting them with the wire wheel and then some rattle can primer.

The dash got the same treatment. Not sure if I want to rattle can the dash with some shade of blue or find another dash pad. The one I have is shot.

Another thing I will need to decide on is what to do about the attempt at bed liner the previous owner put down. It is pretty gross.

I don't know if it would fit, but if it did I would be interested. I will do more research. Hard to tell from your build thread if it was manual or electric. The older pictures made by it look like it was in pretty good shape, but I know things can change. Anyways let me know.
