'78 K20 - RootBreaker from 1990 - nov 2025 8.1L not runnin

Rootbreaker, you should take those state inspectors out on a trail with you and show them a real tilt test. I can't believe how much (of other peoples') money some states waste on crap like that. Don't they realize that a truck like yours is made to take on "tilts" and stuff? Idiots.

i agree.. and no one ever flipped... as much as the rumors were back in the day... i heard that tow trucks sat there waiting as guys on 44's would flip and couldnt drive out of there... but talking to the inspection guy back in 2004.. he said NO ONE ever flipped... wall isnt that big.. only 3' high...

however where it comes in to play is this... they dont check for you to flip..

they weigh your truck... then have you drive up the bank... and there is a scale at the bottom... they measure the % weight shift.... too much and you fail... so flexy rigs??? not sure how they would do....

here are some pics when i went after hrs to try the wall...
http://www.supermotors.net/registry/8011/24452

i never had to do it cuz the first guy was cool... he said the truck before me had no problems and my truck had a better setup.... so he let me not have to do it... but i cant find the paperwork so this time i just might have to do it....

ok so registration is complete..... woooooo :woot:

took her out.. I forgot how much of a flatspot bias tires can have...
so i have 10 days to get it inspected.. not going to happen.. you have to schedule with them!!!!!

so to do list for inspection
1. rear view mirror - have it need to install
2. alignment - steering wheel is WAY off and it pulls hard to the right
3. remove 1" block from under the bed (can leave it on then i need a support of some kind around my saddlebag gas tanks as they are on the outside of the frame) stupid rule... like a cab or bed will protect it.....

so took the truck out... she pulls wicked hard to the right.... brakes were ok but im thinking they still need to be worn in .....GOD IS IT BOUNCY... i didnt take it far.. just enough to get out and moving to see if there were going to be any real issues.... none that i could see....

holley truck avenger...
1. replaced 2.5 power valve with a 10
2. .71 jets installed
3. blue accelerator pump cam installed

now she idles great.. runs ok.. put a load and she is errrrr ok... but boggs bad when you hammer it... so more fine tuning to be done....

gonna use the camcorder and get some video... :waytogo:

Sounds like a bad brake line or caliper making the truck pull hard to the right. Like it's not releasing all the way or something. I've even had a rotor that was so warped it made the truck pull one way. Does it get worse under braking?

That off camber thing is a joke. I hope it puts some dorks' minds at ease though. They should make a ramp out of beauracrats and hippies and let you drive on it.

yeah 4years of brakes sitting.. figure ill go out and drive it around more before worrying.. still have to fix the alignment.. steering wheel is almos straight up and down...

also.. wow i forgot how much room there isnt behind the wheel.. guess the 08 crew cab has me spoiled!!!!!! :dunno:

Oh yeah that will do it. There's probably some corrosion on the piston in the caliper that's keeping it from moving likes it's supposed to. I've taken them out before and hit them with a scotch brite and they were as good as new. Probably just driving it will clear it up. Hopefully. You may have to go to a smaller steering wheel now...

she made it out without breaking... went to take video.. but it turned out to take a pic.. at a red light.. i was making a right...
then target shot.... IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!

they dont need to be that big.. going to cut them down.. once i find out exactly how big...
think they have to be 8" from the ground... and as wide as the tires... tires are 17" wide...

Finally back on the road!! I'm digging the electric blue color. That should help you slip past the cops.

i know driveway builds are supposed to be fun, cool and awesome.. not cheesy like mine is so far...

but since MOST of the work has been done.. im getting into the side you dont really see much of... the LEGAL PART!!!!!

so far a fricken nightmare.. now while I do not know the legal liabilities on my youthfull actions... thought I would share so you guys can see what YOU may have to consider.

for my truck to be on the road, the wife wants it 100% legal...

in 1997 at my last inspection... one of the dmv guys looked at my vin plate (the old metal 2x3 or 2x4 tag above the rocker under the door pin latch..... he felt it and had a look on his face.. so i thought about it and said.. oh yeah i better take care of that...

so since my truck has been off the road since 2007 and you see my registering nightmare.... now on to more...

back in 1994-6ish time frame i bought a 1982 2wd diesel pickup c20 for $400....
I put that cab on my truck... well the internet isnt that great back then so I simply drilled my vin off of my 78 and junked the cab.. drilled and rivetted it onto my 82.... dashpad covered the other vin but i left it there... cmon the frame is a 78 and that is what is important...

so now i called trenton nj dmv up and got the paperwork....
not going to scan it but will give you an idea of what they are asking for and then more problems :doah:

so that is alot of stupid stuff.. and i iknow most young guys would say screw it ill lie on it all but truth is that this is a document and i will go legit... sooooo..

with my problems in hand I called back and here is what i mentioned and the response...

problem 1 - year and make of motor.. 1991 chevy caprice - need receipt to which i know is somewhere but i cant find it.. will be tearing the house apart tonight.... if i cant find it.. she said she can send me a court order and go to court.. not sure what all that means... if i just talk to a judge and they give me a legal binding paper.....

problem 2 - make of body and make of chassis - this is where i started with all this... i have both titles now in my name but what do i do about the riveted on vin? i have a call in saying i need to talk to someone.. so will wait for a call back.. will say.. hey i kept the old vin when i junked the old cab... but what do i do with it? remember i painted my truck and painted around that plate...

problem 3 - max speed in MPH - well i now have a chevy C60 cluster with tach/gas gauge combo... im just going to put the max speed and hope nothing else comes out of that one...

problem 4 - the drivetrain.. now understanding the truck has passed inspection twice... i still have to fill out these fields.. hope they dont get all crazy on me...
Steering system - modified, power
Braking system - modified (rear disc conversion)
Front suspension - leaf, solid axle
Rear suspension - leaf

problem 5 - welding frame/steering/suspension
all i know is that the front break lines were welded as drop brackets... but has passed inspection.. not sure if i should say it.. im going to say no to welding as i didnt do it.. and dont know of any other welding...

wow this is all ALOT OF WORK!!!! now i know why people dont bother going the legal route!!!!!!!!!!!
but as promised to the wife...

it will be legal..

so tonight find that receipt (wife found my lift papers so that is cool)
finish filling out the paperwork
try and find somewhere to weigh my truck (local mulch/rock place)
send this stuff in to trenton.. and wait for a call to schedule a time for them to look at it... then inspection.... remember inspection will be another pita.. they said they wont pass my 40's even though they measure 38.25... they said they have to be 38 EVEN... well 38" tsl/sx are 38.5 so that is my arguement....
