'78 K20 - RootBreaker from 1990 - nov 2025 8.1L not runnin

it helps but I have done it cold and hot .

easy way to heat is in front of a salamander / torpedo / construction job heater for a few min.

I just line it up and if possible finger tight few bolts to line up perfect . then dead blow plastic coated hammer down to flush and then do the ring gear bolts.

Run a flat file against the maiting surfaces when you get started, just for clean up

so update.. got the axle back together a month ago. She is up and running.

been driving it around wearing gears in... today I went out to start it as it has been sitting for 2 weeks and I know I have no dash lights (did but went out recently) so figured its the fuse. looked and nope... so turned on headlights to make sure all 4 are good and I had no headlights.. long story short my silver aluminum headlight breaker fell out. hah..

I posted a q on that and turns out so simple.. but still an issue with gauge light... but not a priority.
then posted about how to adjust the steering as I have so much play and that I swapped out the internals of the gear box so the fix was to loosen nut and hold with allen key. Turns out I got a full turn of the allen so hopefully that was my play in steering and will find out tomorrow..

so far all stupid updates... so I got another...

10 years ago I bought a hitch for my truck for $20... well it came off a chevy and it bolts to my frame BUT it hangs way too low. since I was in a work on truck mood... got the grinder out and wrench/hammer...

look what I ended up with...

tomorrow will need to bolt the sides to the frame, hold cross section in place and clamp it where I want it, trace it and drill holes and bolt back together.. maybe even weld it all up and back on... I hope....

hah

carb was acting up but hey... had to go play..

peanut butter mud.. wish it was longer and video does no justice...

I got soaked due to old very large manual clutch rod through floor. gonna patch that up.. also snorkel let too much water into carb and after I shut it off (bad idea) wouldn't start... eventually good to go..

no worth posting but hey why not.. ended up at end running 2wd... meh..

umm this was blue hole off of atco road... ummm I pulled the ferd on 39.5irocs out.. then he told me to hit it.. we didn't expect my truck to stop running... if it was running we wouldn't of been stuck for so long.. 5h.. and head down... ashamed... 2x ferd diesels pulling, 1x ford 429bb(friend on irocs) plus a jeep plus a sierra on 35s.. and took 5h tugging.. this peanut buttermud is nasty...

so removed exhaust.. drivers side spewed a lot of water out of the muffler...

so now onto the question... I found out why the truck wouldn't start... and umm yeah... WTH!!!!

I had something similar happen but it took out the distributor cap too. I always figured it was because I didn't locktite the rotor screws.

Yeah same here, took out the cap too. I never figured out why and it never happened again either. And it was a street car, so it's not like any trash got up into it.

slight update.. its stupid but warrants a reply..
when I painted the truck blue, I did the inside but left the floor brown. Well peanut butter mud is brown as well but decided to spray bedliner it.
Autozone is $9.95 a can and Walmart is $6.45 a can for SAME EXACT STUFF!!!! WOW...

the amount of gunk that was clammed and hardened into my drivers caliper.. took truck for a ride to see how she is running and all was good.. WAS good.. light brakes, acceleration, steering, etc..
doing 55mph and slamming brakes.. ummm NO!!!! I was in left lane and lane changed to the right lane.. fortunately no one was there. Was like drivers side caliper wasn't working. Got home, took both tires off and viola... peanutbutter mud clammed into caliper then rotor heating it up like a kiln... well I had a brick in there.. pressure washer got it out and were good with brakes... need to find time to get out now...but soccer tournament this weekend that I need to coach..

ok so more... it doesn't stop..
while I was looking at my truck I noticed the front breather line was broke...
grabbed the end and was caked with peanut butter mud... no cant be...

well lets see..
