'78 K20 - RootBreaker from 1990 - nov 2025 8.1L not runnin

ok so it snowed so i didnt get far... i need to bleed this thing out..

so i bought one of these from HF.. will see if it works or if it is junk..

http://www.harborfreight.com/brake-fluid-bleeder-92924.html#.UyniMahdXn8

i have one of the manual ones but feel that i am lazy... why not use an Air Compressor?!?!?!

this thing worked wonders... well kinda... only after...

so i was trying to use this tool and it wasnt working... i then tried doing the normal bleeding like brakes... no pumping..
still didnt get a clutch.
Ran out and bought a new hydro clutch master cylinder... and replaced that.
Once I replaced that liquid was gravity bleeding out the other end of the hose as I had it disonnected.

So I connected it all up, used this tool and it pulled brake fluid through great and i watched it go from bubbly brake fluid to solid.

Like an idiot I drove out the driveway now that I had a clutch.. then realized I had no brakes!!!!!!!!! WHOOPS... pulled back in and blead them.... low on fluid on back set (front brakes)... so with brakes I went and got gas.
Drove around here and there...

guessing I still have air in the line because I slowly lost the clutch some... i can get it into first but not second... hope the slave cylinder isnt bad...

so tomorrow my 2013 gets its oil changed... then going to try and get this clutch going then go to inspection... will see...

just go under the rig and manually push the lever/slave about a 1/2 dozen times.. it'll be fully bled instantly..

thanks to Martin for that one... :haha:

really that is it?
leave it connected... go under rock the arm back and forth.... air will bleed upwards?

yup.. put it all together, fill the ressy, close.. go under the truck and manually operate the slave by hand some.. done.. I added about a tablespoon of fluid to the ressy afterwards.. if that..

that worked... actually i took the slave off and manually did it that way as i couldnt manually do it.. guess im not man enough to man-ually do it :haha:

anyway... when i pulled the piston out.. waaaay out.. then pushed it in I heard a few bubbles up at the res after about 3 times... then did it 5 more and didnt hear it anymore...

so this sucks.. got my new truck over and oil change and tires rotated... went to take the '78 for inspection and noticed I dont have my new registration.. ughhhhh so no inspection today... :doah:

well ill have to see when.. maybe next saturday...

small update. many people are gonna ewwww me for it..

the qjet just hasnt impressed me and havent been able to get my truck through emissions...now my truck will be exempt in 9 days or so...

truck is being pulled in at the shop and they are going to tear it down and get this puppy running. I have NEVER had a shop work on the truck so im sad... ive had the truck since 1989 and NO one has ever worked on it without my supervision...

but when I stopped in with the carb and other goodies... the owner (also mechanic) said his carb guy has been stoked waiting for the parts as he is wanting to work on the truck. they have lifted pickups and jeeps that are all newer..

so the guy poked his head in and saw the carb and a smile lit up on his face... I am not sure about you but I can tell by facial expressions on passion.. rolled eyes is an inconvenience.. but the smile this guy had... gave a warm heart feeling that he is gonna take care of my baby... and get her running great.

i could of picked the truck up and put the carb on myself but they already discovered my NEW MSD distributor has a bad bac advance module and I figured why not let them find the rest and get me going...

im stoked!!!!!!!!!!
hopefully pick it up tomorrow... im going to be calling them at end of today at his request so he can tell me where we stand on it running...

WOOO HOOOO!!!! Truck is up an running. Shop came through for me...

so they removed my old carb... which will be going up for sale. A remanufactured qjet that only has 50 miles on it TOPS...

but they installed my new one
said my new msd dizzy wasn't getting any adv timing so they used the msd adv timing rebuild kit, new fuel filter and tuned her up.

The Truck Avenger 93670 has a few advantages
  • Aluminum
  • They did not need to change ANYTHING out of the box so same jets, discharge nozzles and accelerator pump cam (orange one is on it I think)
  • This one seems to have a QJet style top so the stock GM cleaner fits on it as I had a spacer from a ford van previously!!!!
Truck is in my driveway but needs the brakes blead. I had no brakes... well kinda back had a bit of drag but no front at all. I looked and fluid was really low. Not sure why yet but still.. raining so not gonna mess with it for now.

Hopefully these work...

ok so new fuel pump is in... Facet from Napa... Power steering pump is in my garage - need to get it installed then bleed brakes and get her out there.

my windshield is so dirty (need wipers too).. but I was on a YouTube video the guy says... use 4 aught steel wool. yes .. 0000 ... he said you better make sure you have the right one but if you do you can use that and water and clean your windshield to a nice shine. so gonna give that a try as I have paint over-spray, sap and other stuff on it.

going to get this truck out of the driveway once a week every week. Wife says it aint dependable. going to to drive it to work to empty both fuel tanks.. we will see about dependable...

so new fuel pump... new ps pump... new brake master cylinder...

took it out for a ride. BUT DOH BIG WHOOOPS!!! ebrake on. was wondering why in 3rd I had to floor it and it wasn't going much faster... LOL does now...

TURN YOUR SPEAKERS UP!!!!!!!

so I took the truck out to work.. 65 miles to burn a tank of crap fuel. Well I made it to work... then almost home. Fuel filter on the electric fuel pump got clogged. But im back up and running.

While driving 60-70mph.. I could hear some gear-mesh... wondering if im low on fluids so better yet... going to replace them... so need some help..

My googling...:

NP205
Drain plug - i know where that is
fill plug - i know where that is
quantity - over 1/2 gallon ?
type - SAE 80 GL-5 ?

smc465
Drain plug - says lower passenger
fill plug - says mid drivers
quantity - over 1/2 gallon ?
type - SAE 80 GL-5 ?

So I haven't done an update lately...

lets say...
dual tanks are rusted... clogging filter..
found out and putting fuel filter in temporarily lead to 4 stitches across thumb knuckle...

anyway.. truck is back up and running...

BUT..

finally got that XJ steering shaft in that I bought YEAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSS ago from a member here...

was super easy and went without a hitch...
