78 K5 Linked/42s Family Crawler

Poor man budget build trying to make a dependable and capable trail rig for the family to enjoy.
I know alot of driveshafts are super thin wall. I'm sure this will hold up for a while just worried a little about the small diameter. Used the roll cage tubing to lengthen it, 1.75x.120 wall dom.

My front shaft is .120 or a hair under wall. It's plenty stout. That will probably last longer than you would think as long as you don't bash it into something.

Slow weekend. Got all the link mounts welded solid and plated on frame end. Then finally started on tcase crossmembers/skid plate. Pictures suck from light glare but its there. Used a shock hoop to protect the thin trans pan. It'll be plated with 1/4" steel too. Undecided if I'm adding support from hoop to bellhousing. Seems pretty stiff as is and doubt that area will get too much abuse often.

I can't take credit for the cab corner plating. Previous owner made that part, I assume this k5 was a bit of a rust bucket. I do like the look and protection tho.

Managed to get rear driveshaft made. Got the pieces ready at work on Friday then welded them up this weekend. Suprisingly I managed to get all the angles and clearance with no binding. I did have to grind on yoke a tad to clear the ubolt straps. I can fit a finger between the driveshaft and lower link crossmember. Very happy with this setup, kinda amazed that my planning is working out lol.

The cheap eBay block hugger headers came in the mail. I'm pretty happy with the way they fit, came with wrong size bolts tho. Not the prettiest work/welds on them but can't bitch too much for 98$ stainless headers. Broke off 2 bolts in drivers side head of course and 1 in passenger side head was broke off when I bought the motor.

Think I'm running single exhaust. May run y pipe in front of oil pan sump instead of behind. Ordered an assortment of mandrel exhaust bends online to try and piece the pipes together, should be delivered someday this week.

Spring is coming fast and still lots to do!

Little at a time. Reworked the cage to clear the rear tires at full flex. Still gotta finish tube work once I decide what rear seat to use. Also got the shifters setting in place tonight. Gotta buy bolts after work tomorrow.

Almost time to pull the drivetrain to clean up, a few new seals and paint. Starting to get down to the little stuff to start the motor up and test out in yard.

Motor almost ready to run and mounted up the steering orbital. Trans and Tcases all cleaned up and resealed. Slid in a 10" converter that I had laying around, seemed to stall between 2500-3000rpm when it was in my Monte. I cant find any info from the numbers I found stamped on it. We'll see how it acts.
