78 sub build (sub is gone)

Gulp $426.00 a piece out the door a piece i only got one for mock up and fab so if it dont work or is too long i can return it figured easier to return one than 2.

Very cool build thread.

Congrats on your progress, it will be very useful for the next guy that wants 64's in the rear.

Maybe I'll see you around on a trail.

You gotta love a mean machine like that.:D

Well here is the current status but first some back yard poser shots cycling the suspension and measuring travel.
Rear bumper is 63 inches off the ground and 3 tires are still touching i got scared to go further but she had more in her.I removed the overload and turned it up side down helped with up travel and negetive made the rear softer dont know yet if too much.

I had to strap it to get the spring to reverse arch.

Measured about 6" of up travel and 9" of down on to the fun part more tear down and hack off.....

How the day started..

Recap hoop sits about 18 inches off frame if i remember correctly,
shocks are being mounted to top of spring plates the bosses where to short to make up both sides so having anothe one machined and will probably finish the bosses and weld them in and get the shocks bolted up by this weekend.
Then i got to figure out what i want to do for a floor?? Thinking of going full convert like a 73 and dzusing the quaters and door skins on with tube doors and going full cage and tube back half.. Just dont know if i want to take on that much right now.
Some thing like this rough drawing.

Nice...

It's always nice to see a rust free vehicle for a change. You are doing some amazing work on the burb. What kind of welder do you have? You obviously have alot more experiance than I do. None of my welds look anything like yours. Keep posting please.

Thanks guys but i cant take credit for the welds its a friend a fabricator builds sand cars for a living at a big shop.My design and concept will se where it leeds.

If you did you shocks inboarded instead of through the floor how long do you think they would need to be.

My set up is going to be the same as in rear springs but I have a seat where the shocks would come through the floor so I can't put them through the floor, it would seem that my only option is to angle them

/ \ like so not the best idea but think its the only that would work

So I guess my question is would a 15 inch travel shock work

I typed alot but i think i answered all questions if not repost or pm me ill try and help so beware if you are reading it all...

I looked at doing that but i would still have to go in the bed floor with the shocks i chose.
if you go with a smaller shock or a stock shock the over all length is alot shorter.
In one of my post there is the stock and new shock the old where 13 3/4 travel to give you an idea. Also by laying the shock over you lose dpening so that would be another strike against it in my book.On a blazer it might not be as critical or a trail only rig but i drive this thing to and fro and its heavier than a blazer also and my wife and daughter also ride with me.
As i stated here or in the 64 post i went up 20 inches from frame rail if you went in front of the axle it could be lowered 7" to 8".If you did that you would be at 12" over the rail plus the floor gap to frame rail 4 inches no body lift. Now you are 8" see where this is going and then lay them in and you can make it work but you are losing uptravel and dampening.
The main reson i went cage and i really wanted to keep the floor trust me i did was these resons.
1.Shock dapening( alot better on spring and close to wheel)
2. Hitting the lower mount and shock on stuff
3.Main floor support right where shocks needed to go or i had to also lean them forward or back quite a bit.( or make new floor support alot of work)
4. The shocks i got where just to big to try and squese under there and function properly.( i was going to get smaller BBC shocks or other's)
5.This truck will be a prerunner, sand, trails and a few rock adventure's i wanted the suspension to work really well at speed more than a crawl it sould do all very well.
I looked at a members truck here in person he had the kirt diy4x inboard kit and we both looked and agread it would not work with out aditional fab.He had to fab mounts out of plate to raise his upper shock mounts to touch the floor (blazer) and lowered the loser mount lower than the axle tube running 2.0 fox 14" travel And i feel it is in a bind and the shock is limiting up travel.
If you are doing 63 there is going to be fab to make it right and safe for the kidies it is not a bolt and go deal. I think the 56 swap works just as good and is a straight bolt and go. shocks are easier to set up and you can out board them in the stock location just raise it up alot easier ans you can keep the seat.
I did the 64 so i could move the axle back remove overhang and then got into a whole can of worms here but its been fun and a chalenge and different thats why i did it.my.o2

Shock pic the new ones only have 3 or 4 inches more travel.
2.5 16" travl extended length of shock 42.43 and colapsed lenght 26.50 so you can do some figuring

Nice work man. I respect the extra effort you put into cleaning everything up and doing it right

yo matt, i like the A-bomb, that thing looks beefy.

i have a D60 with drw hubs. if you find one with srw hubs, i'd be willing to swap, if you still plan on going that route.

ya for sure i let ya know i found one just saving the funds 1200 bones..
nice meeting ya today thanks for the comp on the a bomb kirt ereally came through cant wait to get it on..

Picked up a long bed from a board member yobtaf thanks.
