79' GMC C15 - Spruce Caboose

79 GMC 1500
I haven't been in the shop much. With the cold floors and being pretty busy with the life changes I've been making lately, I haven't had the drive or much time . Today I decided as it gets warmer, that it's time to get back at it slowly. Or atleast a little bit a day.

I planned on buying all new accessories but with some other investments I've made I've decided to replace them if I need to. The truck was wrecked bad on the passenger side so I'm assuming everything works as it should, worst case I replace it if I have to. I can't lie, it's a little lame putting old parts on a freshly painted engine but I just wanna enjoy this thing so I'm moving forward. Got the water pump, power steering pump , alt, radiator, and front bumper on. It's nice to clean stuff off the floor AND get parts on the truck.

After a couple of months it'll all just look like it belongs together. :D

After reading @mrk5 's recent posts I decided to only take one leaf out of the pack. I took the bottom leaf out. I have the 4 in drop shackles and brackets and I'm hoping the leaf gives me a little more low low without going too much. I gave the leaf packs a wire wheel and a quick dust in. Threw some new centre pins in, as well as installed the new bushings after I got the old ones out.

The fuel pump I ordered had a big unnecessary clip on it, so I cut the wires, soldered the connections and then heat shrinked it. I would like to get the tank mounted after the leafs are in so i can measure out and plumb the fuel lines and regulator.

Was also happy to see the rad hoses fit and I don't need to mess around with anything too much

Today I got the other leaf spruced up and got them both installed. I had to use my die grinder and take about .020 off for the bolts to fit through the drop shackle holes, and also through the belltech drop brackets. The highest setting on the drop shackle fit the stock bolt size but not the lowest setting.. sublimal discouragement? Haha.

Other then that they seem well made and nice. Got the tank brackets cleaned up and installed, punched out the rivets and put new straps on it

The list..(s) are still very long but it feels great tp scratch some things off the list.

Im on the hunt for cooling fans, and in my searches i keep coming across the windstar fans, which are nice and cheap online. Does anyone know what years fit best? I cant seem to find anyone who mentions what year they bought. I am going to be running the holley terminator x max kit, which has an output for fans, but ill also need to buy the pigtails that clip in to the fans so i can run my own wiring.

Thanks man! @mrk5

Today I cleaned the main harness and it's actually in really good shape. I took out the dashpad so I can find out where to cut a hole for the vin on the one I picked up.

I got the floor patch welded in as well. Smeared seam sealer over the welds. I'm going to order some kilmat or something to soundproof the cab with, as well as order up a black or dark grey carpet for it.

I'm not sure where I got brake booster from but the hole in the rod was smaller than the post on my pedal. I had to Waller it out a bit with the die grinder.

The list is getting some things crossed off which is nice, but I'm running out of space to add more.. PXL_20210205_231354169.MP.jpg

Nice patch and dash pad!
What is going on with the rusty brake lines in the master?

Its my way of bench bleeding it since i dont have any plugs for it. I think i saw it somewhere along the way... Didn't know if it was bad not to do it.

I'm thinking I might try and find a driver's side battery tray, and run this stock air intake I got with the truck. Alternator has switched sides anyway so a battery on that side would clean stuff up except for the starter wires. Was thinking of making a mount off the core support.

Using a factory harness on LS swaps is cleaner to use a driver's side battery. I'm not sure how the Holley is set up though.

They made driver side battery trays for the 80s trucks. Might be able to get one of those to work in yours.

I'm kicking myself for having the one I had, installed in the blazer when I sold it. Not sure if the 80s are different or not from the 79. Maybe I could cut the one I have up and use it somehow

Yea it seems that way for sure. Yea I won't know how it's all wired in until I get the thing in my hands..

I think the 80s tray would probably sit in there okay you would just need to make the mounting holes.

yea that wouldnt be too bad. Tack a threaded nut on there or something. I think i lucked out with the k5, as it bolted right up to where the fuel evap canister was mounted previously. This truck was a smog motor, so maybe i have some ditched mounting locations to use.

I believe the 80s trucks have the driver battery tray provision for the 6.2L diesel dual battery setup. All the 80s trucks have the mounting holes.

the intake is strange with the additional chambers hanging off of it but id assume its for a purpose. Couldnt hurt to keep the MAF sensor in the stock location as well.
