'79 K20 vs. an '84 K20, which would you choose?

I see a few cool things there. coolant circulation heater, airbags in the back, battery isolator for dual batteries. Is the camper shell included? The rust doesn't look bad to me. Pretty typical for trucks of that vintage.If it runs out and shifts well I would think it would be a 2500-2800.00 truck. That's just going off of what I can see in the pictures.
 
I having the only fuel tank on the passenger truck common?

I've always had saddle tanks or if it had one tank it was located on the drivers side...

Hmmm. Not sure on that one. I thought if single the were on the drivers side as well. So switch in the cab or mounts on the frame on the drivers side for a tank?
 
That's what I meant. At high(er) speeds. I actually just had a 203 burn up a th350 from being in hiloc without the hubs locked. So...... Don't ask why it was in hiloc. It has the part-time shaft conversion. But that's another story.

I think you misunderstood me. Driving all over creation in hi-loc with the hubs unlocked is 100% perfectly fine. Driving on dry pavement in hi-loc with the hubs locked is very bad.

In the 70's, the passenger side tank was the standard one. In the 80's, they switched it to the driver side for some reason.

I can't really comment on the price. That looks like a bargain where I'm from.

Man you shoulda seen the trans pump when I pulled it. Sort of a dull reddish brown color from heat. And I never smelled fluid like that b4. Just cooked. It actually made it 400 miles at highway speeds then another 250 after putting back in hi. Thats was a tough transmission right there

He just got back. I think he may have been on a hunting trip or something, his phone was cut off the entire time. Said he'd be back on the 1st and that's when he got back to me.

Talked to him on the phone for 15 mins or so.
 
Going early Saturday morning to check it out. If it's what I'm looking for and we can agree on a price then I'll be back later in the day to pick it up.

I'm not saying it's ideal, it's not. But with matched tires, on a straightish road, at highway speeds how would being in 4x4 kill a transmission? Theres gonna be binding, and irregular driving characteristics, but that all comes in after the transmission. Maybe I've had too many beers, but I'm not buying it. I'm guessing it was on its way out regardless.

And if it was a curvy enough road, to really put everything in that much of a bind, to burn the transmission up, how did the operator not notice?

was a 454 available in a K20 in 84? I'm thinking not.
If you can only get one, I'd get the best cab you can (less rust), then swap parts to make it what you want.

You could be right. This happened when I bought the blazer. Had someone drive it here for me. He didn't know it was in hiloc cause he's apparently an idiot. Shoulda had an auto transport haul it for me. Then there would be no mystery

Hi Loc had nothing to do with it. You had a trans failure, that's all. And again, hi loc is just like driving in 2wd if the front hubs are unlocked. Nothing will bind and even if there was binding for some reason, it would hurt the axles, t-case, drive shafts or tires. The transmission itself doesn't care what goes on after it.

Thanks for straightening me out on that. My old '79 was all stock one owner type a deal. Still had the sticker on the visor. Could swear it said not to drive over 25 in hiloc. But maybe that was lolock?
Tomorrow morning though, we get to find out about this '79 handloader90 is going to check out.
