79 K5 H-Bomb build

New here but everything I seem to "research" has been pointing me back to this site so I thought I'd buy a membership and do a build thread here.

Anyway...

Bought a 79 blazer and got it home...

It's pretty stock, although it has a very low mile Jasper 300hp 355 in it. The whole frame and body is virtually rust free so its a nice platform to start on. Runs great and passed DEQ with flying colors:

My son instantly claimed it as his... His nickname is "H-bomb" so that's the reason for the name of the build.

I originally planned on building a mid 80s land cruiser but due the vehicle being out of state and not running it was a pain in the ass to try to title in Oregon. I do have a great list of parts that I'm robbing from it though:

-Recently refreshed Big Block 454
-Griffin Radiator
-Gov bomb14 bolt rear end (to be replaced with either a detroit or arb)
-Dana 60 front with a TBD locker in the front (to be replaced with an arb)
-203/205 with NWF shifters/cables
-TH350 with an art carr shifter (to be swapped out to TH400 or 4L80e)
-PSC steering ram and pump
-Drilled and tapped Chevy steering box
-63 in rear springs
-8" Superlift springs up front
-Drivelines
-Etc...

Pulled one of the valve covers off... Nice to see it has the decent factory heads and some roller tips:

Ha, thanks guys.

Little progress this weekend (mother's day). I'm tackling the interior first as my wife wont sit in it in its current condition (she is a bit of a princess).

There was a bit of rust in the front floor pans but nothing too bad. I knocked down the rust with a wire brush and hit it with some rustoleum. Eventually I'll cut those pans out and weld in some new ones but this should buy me a few years.

Oh, then the neighbor came by and pawned his old xr100 off on me. I thought I'd tear it down and let my daughter and son ride it:

Then of course being in Oregon... we are going to get rain this week so I threw the soft top on:

looks good with the soft top and those horrid taillights removed :waytogo:

Going to go ahead and subscribe to this. Looks like a promising build you got started. That's a nice dirt bike to get them started on. Those old xr's last forever. I still have my old 1985 xr80r.

Anyone have an opinion on the 8" superlift springs? I've head they can be stiff from what I've research on the site. This isnt going to be a rockcrawler (more of good ol' boy build) so I dont need a crazy amount of flex but it do hold its own too.

I'm also curious if these springs are going to be enough to clear my 42s. I looked through the "XXX amount of lift and tires" thread and looks like its "doable" but wouldnt mind hearing some responses on that issue either.

Last thing... I've got the ORD 2 1/2 flip already. What would be a good spring/shackle combo to clear the 42s? I have some stock 64s around but I dont think those are going to be enough?

Thanks.

small update...

Had some time to work on getting the seats and tuffy box in:

Unfortunately that is as far as I got. The passenger side bracket (d192) does not line up.

I called corbeau and they sound like they were not aware of this problem. The guy I talked to sounded like he was willing to help and make things right. I'm going to take some measurements tonight and touch bases with him tomorrow.

I realize that I could just make new holes and call it a day but that isnt what I paid for, nor do I want to put any extra holes in my floor. Hopefully they can help me out. The seats themselves are great.

Are you going to trim your fenders at all?

Martin

Lol, do I have a choice?

Yeah, I'm not after a super low slung rock crawler but I dont want a rig with an insane COG either. I think the 8" front springs, some 4" 52s in the rear with a 2 1/2 ORD shackle flip, zero rates to push the axle forward, and some fendering trimming should get me close.

I havent built a chev before... I've been screwing around with Land Cruisers for last 10 years so I'm all ears for suggestions setting up the suspension on this build. I'm not opposed to moving to a different size tire size either...although I want to be able to drive it to my local trails which is about 20 miles away (not a DD though).
