79 K5 H-Bomb build

If you want to regear might as well spend the money on the D60 and 14B right? If you want to do crossover it's easier with the D60 too.

with the 3 speed trans what gears do you want to run?

The D60 already has high steer and hydro assist... plus I have a brand new ported PSC steering box.

I also have for the Blazer:

all the u bolts and 1 ton spring plates
Rear shackle flip
ORD shackle flip shackles
front shackle frame eye kit
set of 2" lift springs (currently installed)
set of 4" lift spring
8" front springs
63" springs
2 sets of zero rates
RuffStuff D60 cover
RuffStuff 14bolt cover
Headers
Intake
Truck Avenger
Got Propane kit (for the FJ)
The FJ has a sm465 and np203 that I'm not going to use.

I'd rather have a TH350 as opposed to a TH400 if I was going to stick with a non overdrive automatic.

I tend to agree... If I used the big block, doubler, or planned on abusing the K5, I'd be inclined to switch out the np203/th350. I'm not sure the hassle or expense in this case is worth it.

My reasoning behind ditching the 350/203 is this. The 203 is a full time case unless someone has already done the conversion. If so, rock on. If not you are probably either going to want to do the conversion (money) or go to a 208 or 241 which have a better gear ratio anyway and are part time cases from the factory. If you choose the 208/241 then you are going to need a different adapter (money). The th400 will automatically have the right adapter to run the 208/241 no matter what it came out of correct? So why not go with a factory combo with stronger parts all around for just a little more than you would have into the 203 conversion or 350 adapter? This is assuming a 700r4 is off the table, just talking non OD auto trannies.

Interesting angle.... Hadn't thought about that either.

I like the th350 for the shorter 1st gear.

Is this the case?

I don't really know the direction of this build anymore :screwy: It kinda seems like it's going the direction of a light trail truck/street cruiser? If that's the case I would think lower gears and an OD transmission is the ticket.

Haha... neither do I. I think I've changed my mind 20 times on what I want to do. I'm hoping you guys help guide me. :)

Where did you find that 55? My dad sold ours a long time back, it had the same green and white paint! Do you know if it came from the peninsula?

It came from Washington but that's about all I know. The previous owner's name was Chris according to the title.

Yikes, Six States (local 4wd shop) wants $4500 do gears and ARBs in the tons (master install kit, bearings, etc). Yes, I could do it myself and I've done it once but I've sold most of those tools off. Not really sure I want to take that on again... It's a pain in the ass.

Holy crap. I sorta added it up in my head and the parts come to about 3 grand. That's $1500 in labor.

I really need to learn to do that stuff myself.

Yeah, kinda my thinking too. $1500 is too high... about double to what I think would be reasonable.

205's and 203's came behind the th400

the bigger issue, one that I just went through was making sure you have the correct length output for the t-case you want to run.

205=Long th400 output
203= Short th400 output
208= Medium length output

Just like most every transmission used in a 1973-1987 truck, it could have had an NP203, NP205, NP208, or NP241.
