(80 K25) "Nigel" 3/4Ton of Fun

Productive weekend, managed to change out the u joints in the rear driveshaft, fixed the license plate light, and opened up the shifter hole a bit.

Today I finally installed my iPad mount. Planning it’s first road trip for this weekend. Looks like I’m going down to St George for thanksgiving, then continuing on to Vegas to visit some friends. Maybe some camping and trails along the way. We will see how it does on a longer trip.

Made it to st George with only a few issues. With my foot set at 85mph the truck did 12mpg. I did notice that the belt had moved over one groove in the ac compressor pulley. Also the 14b decided to puke out the vent. The axle and vent are both in the stock locations and it wasn’t over filled. I checked before I left. I didn’t notice until after it had been parked for a few hours so no idea how hot it was. I guess I’ll check after I get to Vegas tomorrow.

I don't think any one expects a brick to go 85-90 for a 100 miles and not build heat...

Oh I never expected it to not get hot. I was just surprised that it had randomly started to puke. Ive done plenty of 40-50 mile trips before at those speeds before without a single drop but whatever.

So trip report. 1300ish miles, 3 states, and some time offroad. Only a few issues popped up. Drove to St George on Thursday. Friday drove to vegas, Saturday drove back to ST G, Sunday drove home.

The drive down to st george I noticed the belt had jumped forward a rib on the AC compressor. I put it back and it all seemed well. Sunday morning I started up the truck and heard a thumping. I though maybe some animal had crawled in there since we were out camping. The belt decided to partially separate that forward rib sometime during the night. So I cut that off and drove out of camp, pulled some guy out of the sand, and to the parts store on 5 ribs. I don't know if it was just the belt (which was nice new Gates) or maybe something on my Kwik performance AC brackets.

My lower steering column bearing fell out. I replaced it with the Omix ADA one for a jeep that people recommend. During install I noticed the bearing fit pretty loose in the plastic bearing holder. Well on the way down it slipped out and was sitting on the XJ steering shaft. I pushed it back in before I left vegas and it stayed in the way home. Ill probably make a PVC spacer to keep it in.

Rear diff hit 150* every time I got on the freeway. It still puked all the way home. In vegas before I left for the return trip I checked the level. It was just below the bottom of the fill plug. I don't know if its hiding a bunch in the hubs and tubes or what. All 4 hubs were 90-100* for the whole trip.

The best part of the trip for me, besides the truck not letting me down, was getting to break in my new truck gun. I had previously built a 8.5" 300blk pistol. I took it out twice friday and put a few hundred through it, cycled flawlessly. The only thing left to complete it is my AAC 7.62 SDN-6 that has been in jail for 11 months.

I've seen the oil get bubbly and aerate real bad and come out of the vent even though the fill level is accurate. What fluid is in It? Maybe it's broken down and not a good oil anymore.

Its cheap 85w-140 oil with about 3K miles on it. It got changed when I put in the detroit a while back. Im going to let it blow out until it stops and see what the level is at. Nothing seems excessively hot. though now that I think of it I didnt check the temp of the pinion carrier, just the diff cover. So maybe thats hotter. either way 14Bs are a dime a dozen and if it blows it blows.

My 14bolt pukes oil til it’s happy. Never temp checked it, I’ll have to try that next weekend when we hit the road to get Xmas trees.

Your combo bears a striking similarity to the problems Larry had with his 14b loaded with a detroit. On long highway runs the 14bolt would puke out the vent. Even after replacing the bearings all the way through, it still did it. He grew tired of the detroit's highway manners and rebuilt a van width 14bolt last winter with an ARB and on this years desert trip it didn't puke a drop. Near as we could tell the Detroit was the common thread even with all the "fixes" he tried as it was doing it. Not sure what it was doing, but it didn't do it before he installed it on that axle and with the new axle running open on the road it hasn't done it. Again, we can't point directly at the detroit as the cause as other factors could have been at work too. Could have been a slight tweak to the axle itself, could have been the gearset even with the backlash being in spec and pattern good. Who knows. But it could be an issue in your case.

Well. I wish I would have seen the bad press about griffin before I bought this radiator. I guess this weekend I’ll pull it and see where the hole is

So its leaking where the tubes meet the tank. I guess this is common thing. I wonder who will do a faster warranty job, summit or griffin...

I think a couple years. Summit will obviously want it sent back in the packaging. Best thing to do is buy a new radiator and use the box it comes in. I don't recommend talking yourself into buying another Griffin, it wasn't a Monday/Friday build.... it was a 24/7 build. Take the refund and go elsewhere. :waytogo: I'm getting ready to send my 2nd Griffin back to Summit and that's only because my 3rd one is out of warranty. :flipoff9:

I figured I’d have to buy another and send the first back in the new box. And it’s not like this leak was caused by flexing or improper mounting. The truck has 2-3k of street miles on it, based off that and every review I found online. It’s just going to leak again. Disappointing to say the least considering I bought it based off of the name.

My question is, if not a griffin, what brand radiator do I buy. Becool is like double the price, so that’s out. I guess I can go parts store brand big block radiator and make a fan shroud for it, hard to imagine it’s better quality but at least I can warranty it in person in damn near every town. Just sucks because I can’t afford downtime and I’ve already modified my radiator mounts to fit this thing.
