82 K20 CREW "WONTON"

I'm glad my 14 bolt us 4.10

One of the reasons I probably won't ever gear Horton. CUCV axles. Unless I find a screaming deal on a 4.10 carrier. Cause new they are 180ish. Add that to gears and your basically at an OEM gearset.

Doubler FTW

I'd love to do a doubler. But I think I'm better off with rockwells on 46s. I've got a rear axle I just need to find a front

I am not as much of a fan of rocks anymore. I have seen braking issues with pinion brakes. The center chunk I would need to either move my engine way back and the front axle way forward or lift my truck another 4" to get any amount of compression.

Simply put they are not bulletproof they can and do break. So an upgrade in axleshafts is a real reality.

Plus their steering angle sucks. IMHO a huge advantage of rocks is the realitive cheapness with which you can do rear steer. With only one steer axle it really reduces the ability to turn sharp

This. Chromos in a 60 FTW

Jeeeeezzzzz.... So much talk about fornicating with the world here. :dunno:
As for rockwells... Yeah they have weak points and pinion brakes suck BUT the super low gearing keeps the stress off of the rest of the drivetrain and from what I've seen there are gobs of spare parts available for a reasonable price. I just sold a set last year (2 rears and a front) for $1500 which was what I paid for the truck they came out of. Then I scrapped the rest and walked away with a little bit more cash in my pocket. Hard to find a hood 60 front for much less than that these days.

A hood 60 for those of you that don't know is what you would find where @wetoolowdingbangow and his cracked heads are. They're a lot tougher than a normal 60 and they're better on the street.

Yes they're case hardened by being peened with 45 ACP rounds. Also they have extra seals so the tweaker guts don't get stuck in them. Thus names the hpd60. Not high pinion but hallow point.

I've been considering doing 2 steering rockwells because I want to run 46in XML's. Anything is going to have a weak point. I really like the advantage of 672 gears and locking them front and rear. I also have a 6.0 that will more than likely go in this truck next winter that will make 500+hp. I think the rocks would hold up better than doing 2 steer 60s. And if I can find them at a good price I think I'd be ahead in the long run.

I agree. You can definitely build a bombproof 60.... Or as we call them around here a "hood 60" but it's going to take some cash. You could spend all day weighing the pros and cons of rocks vs 60s but in the end it's all what you decide to do! If you keep pinion brakes make sure you do some kind of locker. It sucks when only one tire locks up when you are trying to stop quick!

It won't be for awhile if I do rocks. I figured I'd do hub disk brakes on the front and pinion in the rear if I do it

Not sure why people are always on about pinion disks on the rockwells. The drums on there may be some heavy mothers, but they stopped the hell out of some seriously heavy trucks.
