82 K20 CREW "WONTON"

That would be awesome. I can get a running 5 ton for 3 grand. If they would go over 55mph I put a flatbed on one and use it to haul my crew cab
There's gotta be a way... The deuce I had was going to be something similar to that. I was going to make it a mountain rescue rig but it never worked out. I might get another one someday and build it. My friends brother has a 5ton that he used to bust the trail on a snow wheeling trip in February.

I got all my parts ordered to get my axles done. Ended up with 5.38 gears, spool in the front and welded spiders in the rear. Also ordered all new bearings, seals, kingpin spring eliminator, brake lines and giant tie rod from ORD. Hopefully I can have them ready to go back in next weekend.

Going back to rockwells and pinion brakes, my brother has pinion brakes on his Chevy crawler front and rear with rockwells and they work really good. I drove his rig while we were in Moab for Blazer Bash and it stopped real good....probably even better than mine. The pedal was a little bit touchy, but that was probably cause he adapted all Chevy brake components to the pinion brake. I'm sure there is another way to do it to have a better/smoother pedal feel for street driving (if that is what you care about). But all in all his pinion breaks worked really, really well.

I'm more concerned about the legal side of it. At least in Nebraska pinion brakes on the front are illegal as far as I know. That was the only reason I'd do hub mounted up front

Ah, that makes a lot more sense then. I just wanted to add that pinion brakes work really well offroad...cause some people earlier in the thread said they didn't like them. The other thing to consider if you run them on the road though is they don't like high speeds which for pinion brakes is not going very fast (take whatever speed your speedo says and times it by 6.72 and that's how fast your pinion is spinning). That causes people to burn them up real fast at speeds (unless you spend some serious coin on the pinion break setup). That's why most only use them for off-road rigs only

Pinion brakes are also spinning 5xs as fast as hub mounted. Probably get kinda warm on the street.

Wouldn't be as much of a problem when crawlin though.

If you snap an axle or 2 then you lose braking to that tire all together also. They do work really well like you were saying @Kay86K5 but they have major downfalls that could end very badly. If you aren't running locked diffs all the time then you aren't going to get equal braking at all 4 either. And honestly... I knew your braking power was multiplied with pinion brakes but I never thought about the high speed driving spinning them 6.72 times faster! Lol

For sure never run pinion brakes if your Rockwell is not locked.....that's a no-no to start with. There are a couple downsides to pinion brakes....but also some upsides. Just depends on your application if they work for you or not.

Yeah, and most forget about that little detail of how fast that rotor is going to spin when it's attached to the pinion....gotta think about that one, haha :D

Most of my parts came in today to put the 60 back together. The gears should be here monday.

Prepping all the parts for paint.
(Don't want to hear it John) :)

I decided to check and make sure the housing was straight, and I'm glad I did. Passenger tube was pretty close but the drivers side is bent way up.

I had to make a centering puck one the lathe since I didn't have one that would fit. Looks like I have some straightening to do in tomorrow.

I wish there was a good way to truss it with leaf springs. I've been looking at it all night and the only thing I can think of is a removable brace with tabs on both sides
It hasn't been on my priority list but I've tried to come up with a good way too. Wasn't looking at it when I had this thought but is there any way you could incorporate the perches into the truss? I can't picture what it looks like stock so I'm not sure how far fetched this might be?
