So i changed out my rear gear oil, but I can't loosen the fill plug..so I'll spray some pb penetrator and get a cheater pipe. Hopefully I won't strip it and have to weld on it. So it'll keep sitting in my dads spot until I either get the oil in it or he kills me haha. I attempted to change the fuel filter but I got covered in gas. But now I understand that's a good thing! Hahaha. Do I unscrew both sides of the fuel filter to change it? And my rtv work is kinda..messy, should I be ok?

Yes, you have to unscrew both sides of the fuel filter. Do you or your old man have an impact driver? Not an air powered or electric impact, but an impact driver?

Spray the fill plug with some penetrating fluid, and wack it with an impact driver a couple times. It should come right free.

That or if you have a torch, you can heat the fill plug up glowing orange, not the housing, just the plug. Let it cool down, and it will come right out.

Soak it in the PB and an impact driver is only 15-20 bucks at the parts store. Heat would be last resort IMO but works. It will come loose if the PB has time to soak. Its "breaking" that fist thread lose thats the trick all while not causing damage to the cover. If you go the impact route, spray tap, spray, tap repeat it will help work the PB in to losen things up.

Brake cleaner in the crotch "new entry to the dirty pranks journal". Thanks

When I worked at a John Deere dealership, that was a common trick.

fuel filter proximity to the exhaust kinda depends on how close to the engine you are. most fuel filters like those ive seen on factory rigs are near the fuel tank at the rear of the vehicle. where the exhaust pipes are significantly cooler, and even then not that close to the pipe.

It looks like they tried to install the fuel filter inside the "C" channel of the frame to protect it, which isnt bad. But if that exhaust pipe is close to the headers, its a little close for my taste. You could try to make a small heat shield of 90 degree sheet metal attached to the frame somehow between the filter and exhaust pipe. its how the factory shields the floorboards from catalytic converters and such. a small sheet of metal with an air gap reflects quite a lot of heat.

Sorry it's been so long everyone. My jimmy has been sitting for awhile. It's been so cold it's kind of hard to get motivated to go outside and work haha. I hope my problem with dying is just the fuel filter/connection.

I sort of read through part of your build thread and you look like you are new to the mechanical aspect of the truck (just like me)....Well I bought mine with a worn out 305 with half of it missing but I had a new 350 sitting next to it :pimp: I am not mechanically inclined too much but I did have help from my brother...I went over there atleast once a week and it took me about 3 months to do the swap basically alone (my brother would have done it probably in 4 full days of work). I wanted to learn about it and I definitely did ALOT. Just go for a motor swap...Its not too difficult just take a bunch of pics and the best thing you could ever know about is gmpartswiki.com It showed me every diagram of the motor I needed to know to get the job done...As far as lift etc...Im running 33's on stock suspension as of now so really that stuff is on the backburner as of now...Goodluck and I hope my input helps..I want a big block lol but your 350 is probably all you will need as of now

Wait, did I miss something in this thread? Why does the op need a new engine?

I cheated and only read the beginning sorry:doah: but he did feel a little unsure if he had enough power at first, I have no idea if he likes his motor as of now. My advice was to jump in and get over your head like I did :haha:

haha I think that is what would happen. If I remember correctly it turned out the op has a 350. I have never noticed much difference in a stock 305 vs. stock 350 myself.
