83 Jimmy build, what to do first?

My dad insisted we take it to a mechanic to get the carb fixed which they did. By replacing it...it also got tuned up while it was there. It ran good yesterday until I was going about 45 and it surged(not sure if that's the right term) and it stalled. It had run at 45 earlier in the evening. Then it started right up and got me home, I didn't try to go as fast. It still smells really strong. Could it be a fuel line?

Try and keep your fuel lines cooler by keeping them routed away from your exhaust . And did they replace the fuel filter.

Check to make sure all tank vents are open and that nothing too hot is close to the fuel line. Are you running a stock mechanical pump?

How do I check the tank vents? And ya I believe it's stock I replaced it with the same one or a very similar pump from O'reilys

I remember you saying that you replaced some fuel line. If you could post up some pics of it and the fuel line routing. It may be vapor locking and I am wondering if the fuel line you replaced was the correct size. Pics will help though. Line under the hood and down by the frame rail. Nice and close not just engine bay.

I gave the guy my old hose and said I needed one just like it. But I'll tak pics if its not too dark when I get home

Make sure your return fuel line is working! I had a hell of a time getting mine to stop vapor locking with my headers.

So you had a problem like this?

Yup. Its a long story but in a nutshell make sure your return fuel line is hooked up. The main point is your carb only lets in so much fuel at a time. So your pump is pumping fuel up the line all the time but its not sucking in the whole amount all the time. So some of it just sits in the line and gets hot from the engine and exhaust temps if the return isnt working. Gasoline will vaporize at a much lower temp than say water, and your engine and exhaust is putting out temps that will vaporize it. The return line allows that fuel thats not being used to circulate back to the tank so you constantly have fresh cooler fuel coming in :waytogo:

I hope it's that simple!

Basically it will vapor lock at idle when you have no wind flow. Before i figured it out i found driving at speed it wouldnt do it because the air flow ould cool the lines down enough to not let it vaporize.

Well mine runs fine at idle. It dies when I'm accelerating past the 40-45 area and acts like it doesn't want to go faster than that?

Yah i just read that post from earlier. I doubt vapor lock then if it runs fine at idle.

But to make sure get us some pics of the fuel lines and some good pics of under your hood. What carb is it?

have you replaced the fuel filter yet? I seem to remember reading that you hadn't. that would fall under the category of basic wrench spinning in the earliest posts on here.

A restricted fuel filter may supply enough fuel to run at idle, but will choke off the engine when running at higher speeds with higher fuel demands.

its also an easy and cheap fix.
