83' M1009 Rebuild to Civilian

Thanks. Got the word that the paint shop might be able to take it next week. I was trying for this week but he has too many cars to paint. Think I found a nice set of front leather bucket seats in the right color without the common shoulder belt as part of the seat. If I get them I will install the seat heat myself. Ordered my new rug kit and door panels today. Got the best rug with the mass backing for durability. Once it does go and come back from the paint shop then it will get reassembled as far as the sheet metal goes then I'll start with the interior. Hopefully I won't be working on it past the end of the year. Hope to have it done by then.

On another note: IT'S ALIVE!!!! I started it up and drove it out of the garage. I have a long driveway and drove it around for a few minutes. Everything seems really good and even the take off acceleration feels great with the 33's and 700R/3.08's. Won't know how the tranny really feels till it's on the highway. Makes decent heat too.

Still hasn't gone to paint yet. Body shop is full of cars but he thinks he'll be able to take it the beginning of next week. We'll see. A few pictures of it outside and driving.

Must be a good feeling to have it moving under it's own power after undertaking a project of this size.

Will keep watching as it comes together.

You've got that right. Funny thing is I'm 52 and I feel the same excitement I did back when I was in my 20's doing things like this!
Got my rug kit in this past Friday from Stock Interiors. Super nice and the ticket said it was just made when I ordered it. Took it out of the box and layed it out. Got no folds showing and it layed out nice. Really formed well in all the right areas. The wheel well covers and door panels look good too. Only thing that is fair is the door panel vents (plastic). They aren't the best with some thin flashing between the vent openings. Went and picked up two nice leather 97 Tahoe seats today. They have the same bolt pattern as my K5. The driver's is power/lumbar and the passenger is manual with electric lumbar. All good leather with no cuts or scrapes. Just a little cleaning and they should be fine. Got them both for $250 too. The guy also has a rotted 84' K5 with only 71k. It has a 6.2/7004r that runs great. No transfer and no rear end gears. Radiator is virtually brand new even though it's been parked for 3 yrs. Hydra boost, alternator, full dash instrumentation, switches, windshield w/antenna, rear bed panels, dent free shiny chrome rear bumper, etc. are all there. I can get it for $5-600. Worth it for parts and then scrap the rest. Wive is mad as she doesn't want me to have another project! LOL

Sounds like a deal...wish I could score something like that..

I might be looking for an engine for my 82 GMC.its 6.2 has a weird noise at times under a load like a piston slap..was thinking of getting a straight six for it and get away from diesels, but its like looking for hens teeth--very few left around here and the few that exist all need work,or are priced higher than a more desireable V8...another 6.2 would be the easiest thing to put back in it though..

I see a 292 six on craigslist listed for 450 bucks, another ad two towns away has a 88 carbed 454 for the same price.:eek1:....the 292 will need the frame bracket to install and thats hard to find even when they were popular..theres a 250 six in RI for 50 bucks but its a camelhumper and sat since 1985 in a shed so it might need to be gone thru..I'd rather have an older 250.I oened two of the integral head motors and they aren't as good as the old ones..

I'm looking for a cheaper engine to keep my truck plowing if I lose the 6.2,one I could drop in and use, long as it runs I dont care if it smokes a little--truck is worth about it weight at the scales thanks to rust..but there aint many carbed chevy engines around here for sale cheap any more..they are either being hoarded or extinct..

Ok, I did a dance last night. The ramp truck came by yesterday afternoon and took the truck to the body shop!:woot: I went down later with the hood and front fenders. They will be starting on it either Sat. or Monday and told me it should be back by the end of next week. The guy who did the body work in my garage just brought me the glovebox door and ashtray that he had painted in my shop and wanted to buff because it had a dust mark or two. All I can say is Holy **** as just those parts look crazy good. My buddy who owns the body shop said if you think those parts look good, wait to you get your truck back. Now I can't wait. Will post pictures soon.

Man, it always seems if **** is going to happen it's going to involve me somehow. I called my buddy at the body shop and his screw air compressor blew the cooler. Tried to have the seam welded (aluminum) and they told him that it has an internal leak when they pressure tested it. Called Sullair and he is getting a new one in 3 days. So my truck is sitting waiting for it's new clothes. He's hoping to paint it either Friday or Sat. Sullair gave him a break on it as he felt he's always had a cooling issue with his compressor. The rep said he had never complained but when they looked at his service records it turned out he had some major repairs done that were most likely related to cooling issues. They ended up giving him it at cost which was still almost $800. List was $1,900!!!!!

At least I did some work on stuff here at the house. Put the new seat heater elements in my 97' Tahoe seats and started on my fiberglass top. Removed the windows, window gaskets, and all the other gaskets on the top. Will be giving it a fresh coat of white on the inside and then a "hot rod black" job on the outside. Have all new gaskets for the top to put on when it's done.

Now to clean my seats. I read up where people use Woolite at a 1 to 6 ratio with water and white scotch brite pads. I know the scotch brite pads sound like they would be too abrasive but I spoke with two detailing shops and that is what they use on soiled and deep dirt filled leather seats. I guess the white pads at not as abrasive as the green and red ones.

Those seats are like riding in your living room.

I had a professional detailer do my '00 Tahoe and he use some sort of polishing ball on my seats to remove the embedded dirt in the leather. I worked pretty well. While they don't exactly look new they look very good for 13 years of butts sliding in and out of them :screwy:

They are in really good shape for the age of them and they are like sitting on my sofa. After I installed the seat heaters I hooked them up to just a loose battery and they warmed up real nice on just that. I can imagine they're going to work real well when the truck is running putting out the 14 or so volts.

The leather is not cracked at all which is pretty amazing and no broken stitches. While the leather is not as tight and smooth as a new ones, they still have perfect foam underneath without any of it deteriorated or split over the frames. The drivers frame had a couple cracks which is typical so I mig welded it up. Because my truck is an 84 and uses the old 6 bolt seat frames I will need to make up flat sub frames to mount these seats to. I am going to use 1/2" flat steel to mount to the floor then tap holes in the frame to mount the seats to it. My floors are perfect and I can't see drilling new holes and adding supports when the holes are there with the threads already. Easier to make the inside adapter mounts.

The guy I got them from has another two or three pair, I can't remember. I know one set is a little darker. He has had them for a few years in his dry lower basement which is living area and heated. The rest are in pretty much the same condition with one pair just a little more worn. If somebody is wanting to refresh their front buckets these seats would work.

My truck still has not been painted yet. My buddy has been trying to catch up on the week he lost and needs to paint the cars that the customers have rentals for first. I can understand that so I've been doing what I can on it in his shop.

I posted in the diesel thread that I just installed 8 new Kennedy Diesel Quick Heat glow plugs and did the resistor upgrade to the controller. It now starts perfectly just like a gas engine. Barely touch the starter after the glow light goes out and it fires right up.

I have also started installing the 50mil GTMAT foil faced soundproofing material that I picked up off of eBay. I got the 75sqft roll for $115 shipped. This stuff seems to be really good with real sticky adhesive. My buddy helped me install it and told me he thought it was better than all the other products he has used in the past. It does stick and smooth out easier with a little heat from a heat gun as you go but it does not crack and break in pieces like some other like materials. I have almost completed the full bed, sides and bottom still having lots of material left. It looks like I will have enough to do most of the front flooring area also. I had also purchased the OEM style die cut asphalt material for the front too so together the front flooring should be pretty quiet. I will get some pictures tomorrow of how it looks. I am trying to have it all done for next week as the warm paint booth will help the material stick and conform even better than it does right now.

Added a picture of the truck just sitting in a bay waiting for the damn paint!

Went to the body shop today to finish up putting in my GTMAT sound deadening material. Came out real decent. Just layed in the factory asphalt front floor material so the heat in the paint oven can help it lay flat. I was told it is on tap to get painted Tuesday finally. Will keep the fingers crossed.

Well, still not painted yet.:frown1: Man, body shop guys can really piss you off, even when they're your friends. They are going to hopefully start prepping it tomorrow for Monday painting. We'll see. I went there today and my buddy convinced me to remove all the front and rear D-rings with the brackets for powder coating. His friend in New Bedford owns a shop which is considered one of the best in the country doing work for NASA and other government work. We took the rings, brackets, and even the rear bumper braces down to him today. He is going to coat them with a HD marine satin black that he said would not wear or chip off. He stated to me that guys will say the PC is not that durable but that they are not getting it done correctly or just getting a cheap job. We'll see how they hold up once on the truck and it's on the road. Think I'll be taking down the military brush guard for the same treatment.

Got a text last night from my buddy at 9:30 that the truck was painted!:woot:

Went by today and got just a few shots as it's still in the booth. Looks really sweet. All the body lines are straight as a pin the way they're supposed to be. The roof came out damn near perfect too considering it was pretty wavy originally. Kudos to my body guy there. He is painting the hood, fenders, tailgate, and misc. pieces on Monday. Hard to see the pearl/metallic look in the paint by these pictures.

Note: Looking at the pictures now I see some spots that aren't on the truck but are in the picture. Turns out my camera lens is pretty damn dirty!

Awesome! :waytogo: That is going to look so clean all put together.

Thanks Rich. I've been following your thread and saw where a few of you guys might meet up and cruise. Didn't know if an old man with a not-so-off road blazer might join you. Not sure when I'll have it done but hoping for about 2-3 months but something is always putting me behind schedule.

That looks freekin great. Super clean job.
Exactly what I want someday.
