84 Crew Cab Whatever Build

Back to the task at hand. Spent some time cleaning up the frame, trimming 3.5" off the end, and moving the rear xmember.

Paint is dry. Reinstalled the rear xmember and started mounting the short box tank. Got the holes drilled for the under the rear mount then decided to leave the tank off and replace the rocker panel on that side before the tank is installed. Then I started thinking about what to do for the second tank. Got some measurements for a Blazer tank set up and it is way to tight for that. Never realized that the shocks are mounted inside the frame on 1 ton and outside the frame on a K5. Where are they mounted on a Suburban? I'll have to look into that to see if it is a better option. Otherwise, I'll have to mount another short bed tank on the other side. The idea of filling up two 15 gallon tanks on opposite sides of the truck for a 454 does not sound appealing to me. But if that is the best option, I'll go with it.

90 burb I had was outboard shocks just like a k5

That sounds right. How else are they going to get those monster tanks in there? Probably will just stay with the saddle tank set up. Doing the inverted inboard shock kit on a 2wd seems a bit on the silly side :).

I was getting the measurements off of an CUCV Blazer tank. How much of a difference is there in the front to back measurement?
I'm not sure on the size difference. I was just following a guy on Blazer Bash with the 26 gallon tank and noticed it was quite a bit narrower than my 31 gal in my diesel blazer.

Thanks for the insight. I'll check into it.

On another note, the machine shop called and said the drive shaft is ready. Just ordered the rockers as well. Starting to get that, "can't wait until Christmas" feeling.

Driveshaft is done and the rockers are here. I know this thing is rough but I am not getting a lot of feedback on this thing. I am still going round and round on what to do about the DRW set up. I want to run SRW but the only way I can think of to do that is to run some H1 wheels which would seem pointless on a 2wd but it would somewhat road warrior like. But then the tire size would be limited to a 16.5" rim. Another option is to just take the outer rear tires off for now. Any other ideas out there?

On another note the driveshaft is back and painted. The tank is ready to go in when the rocker is replaced. And the rockers are here, ready to be installed.

You can run any wheels you like on the back can`t you? The fronts should just be adaptors that you could take off and run regular wheels on.

I think....could be wrong.

Have you measured how wide the rear axle is from flange to flange? I can't tell from the pics if it is the wide dual rear axle or the narrow one? What would need to be changed on the front to make it single front wheel width? Just the hubs? Maybe use hubs off a one ton camper special 2wd to get ones that would match your calipers? I'd have to see pics of what you got going on up front to see if it was similar to my old one ton camper special 2wd I used to have.

I thought the Dana 70 dually axle was wider than a SRW 14BFF?

You're probably right on that. I was thinking of the newer ifs trucks when I first posted.

Actually the H1 wheels would look cool... Like you said to bad they are 16.5 only.

Yeah Im pretty sure it's the whole hub. I am not sure on the 70 vs 14 I just know there are narrow dually rear ends and wide ones.

The difference between the SRW and DRW hubs is the flange placement, oddly the flange is further OUTBOARD on an SRW hub than a DRW. Being from a pick up, the D70HD you have is the wide version, so you'd need to swap to SRW 14 bolt hubs to make the WMS the same as a dually D60 (direct swap). The swap isn't a must, iirc the difference with stock dually hubs is couple of inches per side so you don't really notice it.

Sorry, I missed the overall width part - an SRW 14 bolt is around 69" WMS and the (pick up) dually D70HD should be 74" WMS.

I know a guy here in town that has three dually chevys, one the brake backing plates are right up against the u-bolts and the other two have about 4" between the backing plate and the u-bolts. Sorry just googled it and answered my own question. His dually with the narrow rear axle must be a chassis cab truck, I guess they have a narrower rear axle and the regular pickups got the wider dually axle. Get a WMS to WMS distance for front and rear and see what would be the easiest to do to make single wheels work if you really want to go that route. I'd keep it dually other that you gotta buy 6 tires vs 4.
