For a second there I thought it might have an A833 and got nervous, I double checked and the shift knob has L123 on it so it's definitely a 465.
As far as changing transmissions I might leave it if the thing works well, a gen v bbc or similar with proper gearing in the axle might work well.. I don't know yet because I have other irons in the fire. I'll get some pics this morning and post them up so you can see what I am working with(against)..

I have no idea why yours is different. I have tested both of my 6.2 engines with fewer glow plugs running and have always had terrible results. When only running one bank the Suburban won't even start reliably at 60*F.
