84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
For a second there I thought it might have an A833 and got nervous, I double checked and the shift knob has L123 on it so it's definitely a 465.
As far as changing transmissions I might leave it if the thing works well, a gen v bbc or similar with proper gearing in the axle might work well.. I don't know yet because I have other irons in the fire. I'll get some pics this morning and post them up so you can see what I am working with(against)..

On the bright side, at least you would have had closer gear ratios. :haha:

Any reason to bother fixing up the 6.2 if you might be grabbing a BBC in the future?
 
Still undecided what direction to go motor wise just because I don't know how the 6.2 runs how good or bad the oil pressure is etc. I think the 6.2 is a cool motor and would be fun to mod as cheaply as possible to get to stock 1st gen cummins levels would be fine.

Does anyone have diagrams for the fuel lines?
I did hear the glow plug relay kicking on and off, I don't know if I need it with 70 degree weather.
Anything else rubber wise I should look for on the back side of the engine? That's where the fuel was dripping from.

You will probably need at least a few GPs to start at 70*. My trucks do, at least.

I don't have a diagram, but it looks like this:

tanks --> tank valve --> mechanical pump --> filter --> IP --> Injectors.
 
Nope, I wish, I did see 1984 on the air cleaner and it says "heavy duty diesel" (lol) didn't these get marketed at light duty?

"Heavy Duty" (should be Medium Duty?) means you have a J-code engine with no EGR or heat riser. And slightly higher power output numbers.

The "Light Duty" C-code engines went in 1/2-ton rigs and had emissions equipment installed.
 
My personal thought:

Who cares about the engine? Engines are easy to fix or replace. Rust repair is what I hate. :deal:

I think you have a fine project, no matter how the mechanical stuff sorts itself out.

I agree! And there's not a lick of rust on this!! Other than the rear fender, that's the only real bad blemish. Boy does it make me want to leave it stock.. It reminds me of my grandpas 78 as a kid. Because funds are nil, if I can get it going I will leave it for a while and just put it around the yard for now.
Anyone see that ac compressor? These lines go into the backside of the dash but I cannot see the evaporator??

FWIW my 84 C20 Diesel cab is classified as a heavy duty or something per DMV. Cost's more to register that truck than anything else I own :dunno:

I thought J codes only came in the cucv, that's why it looks so familiar then. Awesome rock out! Hahha never been so excited about a diesel!

I'm used to weight fees in ca, it'll be around 150-200 to register. This will be my 4th k20 so I expect that crap.

No, all the 3/4 and 1-ton rigs had them. The unique part about the CUCV is the M1009s are the only 1/2-tons to get them. Aside from that and the electrical CUCV stuff the engines are the same.


So I guess you're keeping the oil burner, then? :thinking:
 
I had a single glow plug functioning and my 6.2 would fire right up in warm temps. Above 60ush. Wasn't even very hard

You and your magic 400,000-mile engine. :rolleyes: I have no idea why yours is different. I have tested both of my 6.2 engines with fewer glow plugs running and have always had terrible results. When only running one bank the Suburban won't even start reliably at 60*F. :dunno:
